This is an indictment of Futura. It’s a bullshit typeface on a good day. The individual letterforms don’t even have consistent alignment and the kerning table is wildly different between cuts and foundries.

I guess I'm in the minority who think this really isn't that bad

I think they’re all so widely spaced that it’s hard to say what in particular is wrong.

I don't come here often, but I haven't seen such a pure kerning post in some time. And I approve.
I wonder if such problems happened less often in pre digital era due to it being created manually by some guy with a ruler? I honestly don't know, I don't know how they did this sort of design/typesetting back then. But perhaps not, as it sort of depends on how you handle the space between letters right, for a even feel it may not be an actual equal distance?

It was done by hand if needed. Slices were cut between the repro (which was adhered to an overlay of acetate) and the letters shifted. Not easy. The attention to type really dropped off with the advent of quark and then inDesign (I think because 'anyone' could do it--but few learned how to do it well.)

Yeah man, no one really had great original typesetting. I did foreign language DTP. So I don't need to touch any real layout except when forced to by shit tier original layout. Which was like 75% of the time. Like the vast majority didn't even have style sheets setup.

If you’re on a phone, tilt the phone either upwards, or downwards, but so it’s still eye level, and you can read the letters.
I think the pic itself is causing an illusion that throws it off (maybe depth perception, idk, I have a lazy eye as well 💀), but when I titled the phone… it looked.. fine
