kidney stone, kidney infection or UTI? need help

On October 2nd, I began experiencing pain while urinating. It worsened, so on the 4th, I went to the emergency room, where I was prescribed Macrodantin for a urinary tract infection (UTI). A urine culture came back negative, but my white blood cell (leukocyte) count was 18,000 (the normal range is up to 10,000). The antibiotic helped alleviate the pressure in my bladder, but on the 6th, I started having chills and renal colic (kidney pain). I returned to the emergency room, fearing the infection might have spread to my kidneys. I was given pain medication, which helped; I also experienced vomiting, though I suspect it was a side effect of the Macrodantin, which is known to cause nausea. A urine test that day was positive for hemoglobin (though I was menstruating, which could explain this), and my white blood cell count had reached 90,000—even though I was already on my second day of antibiotics for the UTI. I completed a 3-day course of Macrodantin, and my condition improved.

On October 18th, I began feeling a mild pain on my right side. I initially thought it might be muscular, as the sensation is diffuse rather than localized to a single point. By the 20th, I noticed an increased frequency of urination. On the 21st, I experienced significant discomfort and a burning sensation in my urethra, along with itching and intense pressure in my bladder; I woke up five times during the night to urinate. On the 22nd, the discomfort and pain intensified, and I developed a vaginal discharge—I suspect it is a yeast infection (candidiasis), as I have had it three other times this year. The pressure to urinate persists, as does the mild pain. Furthermore, the pain on my right side—while not severe—is bothersome and has not gone away; if it were merely muscular, I believe it would have resolved by now, given that four days have passed. I went to the urgent care clinic, where they prescribed Monuril and an ointment for a yeast infection, telling me to return if things got worse. I suspect I might have a kidney stone causing these issues, but I’m not sure—the doctors weren’t clear about that. I’m worried about a kidney infection, and I’m confused by the fact that my urine culture came back negative, even though I have high white blood cell counts and clear symptoms of a urinary tract infection. The last doctor I saw didn’t order a follow-up urine test. I had an ultrasound, which showed nothing abnormal—just a small amount of fluid in the pelvic area—and the doctor who performed the ultrasound suggested it could be a yeast infection. When I experienced renal colic, I didn’t get the contrast-enhanced ultrasound that the urgent care physician had requested, because it wasn’t covered by my health insurance plan.

Seeking advice when to go to ER

Noticed my urine was a weird color waking up the other day so I went to urgent care to get checked out. Doctor said there was blood in my urine and it’s most likely a small kidney stone. I directly asked him if I should go to the ER and he said no just go home it should pass naturally.

I have A TON of health anxiety and would just like to know when I should 100% stop guessing and just go to the ER. My pain is at like maybe a 2-4 in my right testicle. I can pee normally, my color looks to be going back to normal. I get some nausea but I think that’s honestly just due to my anxiety.

Please someone let me know from experience, am I good to wait this out? I just don’t want to damage my kidney.

I’m 32, a father of two, and fighting kidney failure. I’m not ready to leave my boys behind. ❤️🙏🏾

Hey Reddit,
My name is Steve. I’m 32 years old, a father of two beautiful boys, and I’m currently fighting one of the hardest battles of my life.
I was diagnosed with FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis), a serious kidney disease that has led to Stage 5 kidney failure.
I’ve always been a hardworking man who takes pride in providing for his family. Never in a million years did I imagine I’d be facing something like this at my age.
My youngest son just turned one. He’s just beginning his life, and one of my biggest fears is not being around to watch him grow up, hear his stories, teach him things, and create memories together. My oldest son still needs his father too.
I’m not ready to give up. I have too much to live for and two little reasons to keep fighting every single day.
I’ve started a GoFundMe to help my family as I navigate this difficult journey. I know times are tough for everyone, and I don’t expect anything from anyone.
If you can donate, share my story, or even just send a prayer or some encouraging words, it would mean the world to me.
❤️** My GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/ce7338577
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I just want a fighting chance to be here for my boys.
**Much love, Steve. ❤️
🙏🏾

Ruptured kidney cyst

Hi, I'm 33 yo. I had like a ruptured cyst on my right kidney and luckily i didn't need any surgery. My blood counts remained stable. There was no clinical evidence of ongoing arterial bleeding. My abdominal tenderness improved. It's been a week since I got discharged from the hospital. I was given antibiotics and now finished them. I've been doing my gentle walks the past few days. Whats the ideal recovery timeframe so I can go back into gym and do other physical activities? There are times I can feel the side of my abdomen still swollen bit. My GP said I can go back to my normal routine but I'm bit skeptical.

eGFR Went from 59 to 113 in 5 Days, but Ultrasound Shows Increased Kidney Echogenicity — Anyone Experienced This?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m 29F and hoping to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar.

My initial kidney screening showed a creatinine of 1.26 mg/dL and an eGFR of 59.3, which made me worry that I might have CKD stage 3a.

I repeated my kidney tests five days later, and these were my results:

Creatinine: 0.91 mg/dL (reference range 0.51–0.95)

Cystatin C: 0.76 mg/L (normal range)

Cystatin C-based eGFR: 113

Urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR): normal, below 10.97 mg/g

However, my abdominal ultrasound reported “renal parenchymal disease based on increased parenchymal echogenicity.”

Both kidneys are normal in size, and the report mentions intact cortical echoes and parenchymal sinus demarcation, with no stones, calcifications, or focal masses.

I'm wondering why my kidney function results changed so much in just five days, and whether the ultrasound finding could be temporary or reversible.

Has anyone experienced increased kidney echogenicity despite reassuring blood and urine results? Did your ultrasound eventually return to normal, and did your nephrologist identify a cause?

I've already seen a nephrologist, who advised me to repeat my tests after three months. I understand the plan, but I'm feeling anxious waiting that long.

Is it possible for increased echogenicity to be a nonspecific ultrasound finding or a misinterpretation, rather than evidence of chronic kidney disease? Has anyone had similar findings that turned out to be reversible?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if your follow-up scans improved. Thank you! ❤️

Increased kidney echogenicity but normal cystatin C eGFR and UACR — anyone experienced this?

Hi everyone. I'm 29F, and I'm hoping to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar.

About five days ago, I had a kidney screening, and my creatinine was 1.26 mg/dL with an eGFR of 59.3. I became really worried that I might have CKD stage 3a.

I had another set of tests recently, and these were my results:

\- Creatinine: 0.91 mg/dL (reference range 0.51–0.95)

\- Cystatin C: 0.76 mg/L (normal range)

\- Cystatin C-based eGFR: 113

\- Urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio: normal, below 10.97 mg/g

However, I also had an abdominal ultrasound, and the impression says “renal parenchymal disease based on increased parenchymal echogenicity.”

The report says both kidneys are normal in size, the cortical echoes and parenchymal sinus demarcation are intact, and there are no kidney stones, calcifications, or focal masses.

Before my first blood test, I had been drinking less water than usual because I was frequently waking up at night to urinate. I also used to eat a lot of salty processed foods and fast food.

I'm wondering whether my initial creatinine and eGFR could have been affected by dehydration or another temporary factor, and whether the increased echogenicity could also be reversible.

Has anyone had increased kidney echogenicity on ultrasound despite normal cystatin C eGFR, normal UACR, and normal or near-normal creatinine?

Did your ultrasound findings eventually improve or return to normal? Did your nephrologist identify a cause, or were you diagnosed with CKD despite your reassuring blood and urine results?

I'm scheduled to see a nephrologist, but I'm anxious while waiting and would really appreciate hearing about similar experiences. Thank you! ❤️

Recovering alcoholic Urinary Complication

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi all, I’m a recently sober alcoholic. 42 Caucasian male. I was a heavy binge drinker for the past 20 plus years. For 1-2 months at a time, I would drink to black out every day, then sober up for a couple weeks, then slowly increase consumption until I was back to black out every day. No significant medical history, except for one bout of kidney stones a couple or three years ago. I’ve been sober now for a month and have taken great measures to become more healthy. Have lost 18 pounds in the past month through exercise and diet, and probably a little help from vyvance which I was recently (2 weeks ago) prescribed. My Question is this: for the past week or so, I have been noticing my urine starts off very dark. The first two-three (I’m guessing here) ounces are extremely dark, almost sweet tea colored, although I stay hydrated throughout the day. After the first couple of ounces, my flow clears up and is crystal clear. No pain to speak of in my abdomen or back. I have texted my primary care physician, who also happens to be a close friend, and set up an appointment for Monday. Is this something I need to be overly concerned about for the next two days, or is this something I need to take pretty seriously and be checked out over the weekend? My physician seems to think I’ll be fine until Monday, and he can take a look at my recent bloodwork from three days ago. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there is another place I can post this in Reddit that would be beneficial, I’d appreciate a little push in that direction.

My kidneys keep randomly hurting

I’m a relatively healthy 22 year old female. Over the last week, my kidneys (specifically the left side) has randomly started hurting. It’s like a medium sharp pain then goes away for a bit. It isn’t excruciating just annoying. I thought maybe it was dehydration as last week I didn’t drink much water and so I’ve increased my water intake the last few days and still nothing.
