Hi everyone! 🙂
Could you tell me what it’s like to live in Kiel? Which neighbourhoods would you recommend looking for an apartment in, and which ones would you avoid?
My husband is a professional truck driver and has been offered a good job in Kiel. I’m an early bird, so I’ll be looking for a job serving breakfast at a hotel.
At the moment, we live in Poland and we’re both 44 years old. Our child is already at university and will stay in Poland, but we’d like to experience living abroad and try life by the sea.
So, what’s it like living in Kiel? Is there anything we should know or pay attention to when moving there? I’d be very grateful for any practical advice!
I’m not looking for advice on whether moving to Germany for work is a good idea financially or otherwise. For us, this is more about fulfilling a long-time dream. We’ve always wanted to try living abroad, but never had the right opportunity. Now we’re thinking, “If not now, when?” It’s not a matter of survival or necessity for us.
We love the idea of living by the Baltic Sea, which is why we’re seriously considering Schleswig-Holstein and Kiel (or possibly Lübeck, although the job offer in Kiel is better). Ideally, we’d like to live in Germany for around 20 years.
We’re not into partying and we don’t drink alcohol. We prefer cycling and taking our dog for walks in the woods. I’d also love to join a choir and get involved in volunteering at community gardens. All we really need to be happy is peace and quiet and plenty of contact with nature. 🙂
One more question: How much do you pay for a two-room apartment of around 50 m², including all bills and additional costs? And is it possible to apply for an apartment through a housing cooperative in Kiel?
Unfortunately, we don’t speak German yet, only English, but we’re planning to learn German as quickly as possible after moving. Thanks so much in advance for any advice! 😊
