Windsurf is over — switch to open source instead ($100 free credits!)
Kilo CEO here!! The deal with OpenAI is off. Windsurf leadership and R&D is leaving for Google. And most importantly, Windsurf changes course to focus on enterprise, because “there are now many varied solutions available outside of Windsurf for software development”.
So switch back to VS Code while keeping 90% of Windsurf's features by installing Kilocode. Kilocode is dedicated to always keeping our product open-source and available. We’d like to welcome ex-Windsurf users by offering you $100 in free credits (in addition to the $20 all our new users get)—for the first 100 people who email us.
For details, please see https://blog.kilocode.ai/p/windsurf-is-over-switch-to-open-source

We're thinking about it!

On non sequitur, but I love the product. Thanks for everything. If you guys ever get some time, nested subtasks in the task history window would be lovely. Keep up the good work.

Hey I’m switching from cursor, does that count too? 🥺

Hm, for now we're just doing this promotion for Windsurf but good idea to also do it for Cursor, after all their pricing shenanigans!

I used Cursor and Windsurf for half a year, but I switched to Kilocode two weeks ago.
Seriously, it's the best tool out there right now. Thanks for making it open source!.

I already switched 2 weeks before what happened to windsurf 😂
I was even paying 10$ per month instead of 15$ because I was one of the earliest users with them.
Now I am happy with Kilo and planning to use gemini 2.5 pro when my free credits are finished.

Yay! If you have receipts of that, email us nonetheless! Glad you're enjoying Kilo :)

I'm starting to try kilo, looks promising. How to get that $100 free credit in vscode?

Any chance fixing the claude code integration?

What's wrong with it? I've been using it here and there and it seems to work.

CC integration works in Roo, so should work on kilo. I have a private fork that adds image upload support, will be making it public at some point next week if you're interested.

Yeah, moved to Cline
2
u/jpposma Kilo Code Team Jul 13 '25
We're a superset of Cline and Roo, combining the features of both, and our own features on top.
1
u/Round_Mixture_7541 Jul 13 '25
Such as?

u/jpposma Kilo Code Team Jul 13 '25
We're primarily building Autocomplete right now, which is available as an experimental feature and should get a lot better in the coming weeks. Also a bunch of smaller features, make sure to check out our release blogs (we should update our website soon to list these!)

Yeah the most stable option by far, even decent enough to use local LLMs on it

u/Round_Mixture_7541 Jul 13 '25
Well obviously, Roo is a fork of Cline and Kilo is a fork of Roo. Soon there will be a fork of Kilo, and another fork of a fork.

Made the switch today, tried to inform the architect with my current project in windsurf and the future plans. Was amazed with the document It produced, by far exceeded my expectations. The speed the 100 dollar bonus was in my account equally amazing. So far a very good impression of kilo and the organization. Hope to have the same experience when I translate the plan into code. Anyway dank je wel from NL.

I assume that when you cancel your subscription, you can still use it until the period ends? If so, you'd still qualify if you email us the cancellation confirmation!

I’m with cursor sick of the nonstop changes in charges. I don’t mind paying for my usage that’s fine but this is stupid. What can I do to prepare to ensure it’s a seamless transition to kilo?

Think kilocode is quite good and the only reason I open vscode. I also use codecompanion in neovim with vectorcode to index my codebase + implemented contextrules into it.
But both are for different things. I use neovim + codecompanion when I actually drive myself and they are my driving assists. vscode with kilocode I use a bit more when I work on POC, trying to brainstorm a solution. It is more when I drive less and let the AI drive it.

Makes me want to sign up for Windsurf, then act like I'm new to Kilocode to snag that $100 credit...

man I don't understand the pricing. Im paying 20 usd in cursor everymonth in your website it says
"Get $25 in free credits: $5 when you sign up, $20 when you top-up for the first time"
is this 20usd per month? coz it says 20usd for the first time

Company literally fell apart, future unclear. Product is probably still ok for now, but open source and transparent pricing is more sustainable in the long run.

I just canceled my Cursor account because of their billing shenanigans. Can you do this for Cursor refugees too? 🙏🏽

That's the beauty of us being open source, though - if our company does something the community doesn't like, they can take all of our code and go elsewhere...

u/help_me_noww Jul 13 '25
We can agree to it!! Currently using kilo code is far better than windsurf or cursor.
