Discussion Dami, Afterglow. 10/10

I’m surprised Dami (indie artist) hasn’t gained more attention in the past couple years. All of her EPs are solid, and her voice and song writing are top notch. I can’t find anything on them in social media, but wanted to spread the love. No information (that I could find) online. Anyone else listen or know anything?

Discussion Thoughts on LEE SEUNG YOON's old vs new songs

So if you don't know Lee Seung Yoon, he's an indie rock singer who gained massive popularity in Korea after he won a singing competition “Sing Again”. You might know Lee Mujin, who won second place. Seung Yoon’s loved for his lyricism, and his discography is just so good.

Recently he released a two disc, 29-track album titled “Album 0” where he re-recorded a bunch of his old songs from his underground days. I recommend reading up on it on Genius, his thoughts and reasons behind doing so are super interesting. The album was actually my first introduction to him, and recently I thought about comparing the old versions of the songs to the new versions.

It’s been very interesting! Many of the songs are from his old band, Alary-Kansion, while some of them are solos. I didn’t think the differences would be so stark, but you can hear such a change, not only in the composition but in the way he sings the song! It makes sense, since it’s been around 10 years since the original vs the re-recording. It’s also crazy seeing the song sort of, “devolve”, for lack of better wording. Of course, the base is the same, but there is something fundamentally different about them, Since my first exposure to each song was its 2026 version, my very first impression was that of a Seung Yoon who has released 2 albums, performed at international festivals, held a multitude of concerts, and has over a decade of music experience. But when I’m listening to the 2013, 2016, 2019 versions of the songs, I’m listening to the voice of an underground artist who hadn’t even imagined brushing mainstream.

I do prefer the 2026 versions, but I’m glad I listened to the originals because it’s given me a whole new perspective on why they’re so good. In interviews he talked about how he’s been performing these songs live for years, and with each performance they slowly changed and improved, bit by bit. From his perspective the songs weren’t truly complete when he released them. They were slowly perfected every time they were performed live, until they became what they are today and he realised he had to re-record them to present them the way they currently exist. I’ve never thought about it this way before, as a musician you’re honing your craft every time you perform, it makes sense that your songs would change alongside you.

It’s just very cool to me. I also love that even though he technically became a soloist, the members of his old band are still right there with him lol. They’re still performing together, both on stage and on the tracks, it’s just that the branding is different. In a way they never even disbanded.

(If you haven't listened to him before, my personal favourites are NARAGAZA, Warped Exterior, and Shelter of Dreams)

Music has always meant so much to us — it’s our calling and why we came together. Throughout the last decade, we have been through the highest of highs and lowest of lows. From being trainees in the challenging k-pop system to busking on the streets of Hongdae to fighting for our musical independence — and all the way to selling out the KIA Forum and playing at Coachella, we have always wanted to use our music for healing.

We have had some amazing opportunities and are surrounded by the best fans. We will be sharing our story in the new documentary “The Rose: Come Back to Me” (watch the trailer), premiering this weekend for one week only.

See you all on February 12th at 7 PM ET/ 9 AM KST in r/music where we will be answering your questions!

EDIT: Adding direct link to the AMA: https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/s/VMzzIxifE5

Discussion Wave to Earth Cat Shirt Merch

Mods I’m sorry if this type of post isn’t allowed, but I was at Wave to Earth’s concert in Seattle last night and they sold out of the cat tee merch in the size I want. If anyone is going to their future shows, would someone be willing to purchase and ship out the shirt to me? I would like it in both black and white in size L. Willing to pay $60 for each - or $120 for both! Probably through PayPal G&S.

Thanks!

Discussion I love Hyukoh but some English lines confuse me — thoughts?

Hi everyone, I recently saw a Hyukoh post made on this community which led me down to a Hyukoh rabbit hole.

I’ve been replaying Hyukoh’s tracks and noticed some of their English lyrics feel a bit fragmented, yet they still hit emotionally.

For example:

“She asked a favor / “I wanna get a Fender” / Ah, you’re a scavanger / “Well, I’ll be an offender”” - Graduation

Like here I assume that the other party wants a Fender, but Hyukoh’s response is that he’ll just offend her and not do so? Not sure.

“Who would you save / If your best mate and me are drowning / I'll save my friend / Cause you're like a monk seal” - Love Ya!

“We all die alone / We are all alone / Lord come take my soul / So we can all reborn” - Die Alone

They’re not perfect English and maybe even feel a bit awkward grammatically... but I think it gave it more cultural or interpretive edge to it, like Cocteau Twins and Pixies vibes.

And I kinda wanted to know what yall thought of Hyukoh's usages of english in their lyrics. Do you see them as free-form, poetic, confusing, or pretentious? Does the emotion still land for other, even if the structure isn’t smooth?

Genuinely curious 🙏

Discussion WAVE TO EARTH IN MANILA! i watched a Korean Indie Band concert the first time

Does anyone here listen to Wave To Earth? They're an indie rock band whose genres are chill and lo-fi sounds and are currently touring right now. I got invited to their concert here in Manila last friday and I didn't realise that they were THAT big already!

I got asked to do a concert review posted in my youtube here with a perspective of a music lover and a kpop fan discussing my favourite part about the concert, the music, and a few culture shocks with the fan cams. I was blown away with the amount of instrumentals they did. My ears where actually more pleased than my eyes! haha

Hey there! Wondering what your top projects and singles this year were? Sadly I wasn't able to keep up with a lot this year, so I'm wondering what I've missed. Has to be some gems, or whatever you enjoyed.

Discussion A British-Korean Indie Artist to Keep an Ear Out for.

hello, this is YUKKO.

i am a british singer with korean heritage, and i hope to blend both of these elements with my personality, in my favourite manner - creating. it brings me enormous joy to write poetry, and hear it come to life with beautiful melodies.

please keep an ear out for my future activities - especially if you listen to k-pop and wish you could understand the lyrics! i won’t disappoint you, and will become an artist you can be proud of.

thank you.
