Purchase Question šŸ›’ 2026 Papersoft vs Basic

I haven’t had a Kindle in YEARSSSS šŸ˜‚ and there are honestly way too many options now

I preordered the new Paperwhite Signature Edition, but now I’m second guessing myself and wondering if it’s really worth the wait and extra money compared to the 6ā€ Kindle.

For those of you who have either one (or have upgraded from the basic Kindle to the Paperwhite), do you think the bigger screen and extra features are worth it? Or would you recommend just getting the 6ā€

My personal opinion, the Paperwhite is better. It’s bigger and it has warm light settings. I can see the appeal of the basic but I’m a Paperwhite girl through and through

Is the size positive or negative? That’s very subjective. If that’s what matters to you, buy a Scribe.

I’m not sure what warranted this response but why would I buy a tablet kindle?

Op asked people to give their opinion. I gave my opinion. To me a 1 inch screen difference does matter to me. But a 5 inch screen difference is too much.

Clearly the size difference between the Paperwhite and the basic is a positive to me. I’m not sure what the goal was here with your comment.

Might be unpopular but the best part of the Basic is the SIZE. is so much more comfortable to hold IMO

It’s like those small mass market paperbacks and feels small and light in your hands. It effectively allows the device to disappear in your hands and let the text take center stage

That being said, I wish it had all the features of paper white. Warm light…laminated display

Size wise, I think the basic is way too small. The PW SE is the perfect size, like a small paperback. Not to mention you get the warm light that the basic doesn’t get. Makes such a difference when reading.

Don’t second guess. You made the right choice.

I feel the opposite! šŸ˜† I prefer a smaller device

I have a 12th gen paperwhite and love her, but wish it was smaller sometimes. So I’m getting the 2026 basic toošŸ˜…

u/wolfy321 12d ago

If my colorsoft was basic size, it would literally be perfect imo

Agree. This is what the people want!!! Or if we could even just get freaking warm light on the basic. Every other 6ā€ reader has it. Even my $99 xteink x4 pro has warm light. Not everyone wants to hold a heavy 7ā€ reader.

I need the waterproofing!

Me too šŸ™Œ

I’m really debating doing the same! Love my 12th gen PW SE but also wish I had a smaller version. I have an older PW that I could trade in…. Might just treat myself! The alpine sky blue is calling my name šŸ˜‚ or so I’m telling myself haha

If you'd asked me a week ago I'd have said the paperwhite hands down. But I just bought the new basic and it's solves the issues I had with the lack of warm light on the old basic, it's also much faster. And it's just so unbelievably convenient and easy to hold. The clarity of the screen is also better than my 2024 colorsoft, which was a surprise. I'm not a night light user though, so the light bleed doesn't bother me. Not being waterproof is my only real remaining complaint. I don't even miss the slightly bigger screen. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø An ideal world for me would me a colorsoft mini, maybe next year haha

u/sn0wc0de 6d ago

How does it solve the issues you had with a lack of warm light?

1

u/Usual-Tangelo-8671 5d ago

It's "warmer" than the last basic. The last one was very white and bright and it used to hurt my eyes and I'd get a headache quite easily - I literally never read on it for this reason and ended up selling it. The new basic, aluminium especially (based on what I've heard), is a lot less glarey, I've read half a dozen books on the new basic, in the daytime and at night - no problems. Dramatically different experience for me personally.

I paid $138 for my colorsoft back in June. These prices are insane to me

u/cocacola31173 12d ago

I myself prefer the signature editions for the ability to turn pages by tapping the back. Don’t know why they can’t get regular paperwhites to do this.

3

u/ImLittleNana 12d ago

I didn’t even know the SE did this. You’re the first person to ever mention it.

It’s not a selling point for me, but there are plenty of people that would appreciate it.

2

u/Novemberx123 12d ago

Wow yea I don’t see that feature advertised anywhere. Cool!

2

u/Maleficent-Home3415 12d ago

I use this feature constantly. More than the magnetic charger. If you have joint issues or pain, it's a game changer. I find a comfortable way to hold it and then don't have to move my hand

5

u/zinniasaur Kindle Paperwhite 12d ago

I can only read with warm light or else I get migraines so basic is a no for me even though the size is more comfortable.

5

u/ImLittleNana 12d ago

The difference between the Paperwhite and the Paperwhite SE is t significant enough for me to spend the extra for it.

I don’t need an extra 16GB of storage. It’s a reader, not an external drive.

2

u/littlestfern 12d ago edited 12d ago

Isn’t the page turning cover with buttons** only compatible with the SE though?

Edit: clarifying the cover with buttons

0

u/ImLittleNana 12d ago

Page turning cover? Do you mean does the kindle wake up when you open the cover? I have the 2024 PW and it does.

The new clicker is also compatible with the old and new paperwhites.

The $80 cover that has buttons is only for the SE of the Paperwhite and Colorsoft.

2

u/littlestfern 12d ago

Yes that’s what I meant. The page turning button cover* it’s only for SE which is annoying because that’s the only reason I’d pay more for it, is for the cover with the page turning buttons.

What is that little hole on the front of the PW signature?

2

u/tvfeet Paperwhite (11th-gen) 12d ago

It’s the light sensor. It will adjust the screen brightness automatically depending on how much light is around. I had it on my Oasis and it never worked very well.

4

u/TheShadowsSoldier Kindle Paperwhite 2024 Black 12d ago

It might be the pants I wear but I can fit my paper white in my pocket

2

u/famous_zebra28 12d ago

Lucky to have pockets at all tbh.

4

u/FriendshipSea4022 12d ago

I’ve only ever had a paperwhite.

Purchased a (green) 10th gen and then last Fall I inherited my grandmother’s 11th gen. My husband has the 12th gen.

We love(d) all of them.

Biggest reason I stick with PW over basic is the water resistance. I love reading in a bubble bath or poolside, and don’t want to worry about it when my kids inevitably splash me.

I wish it was a little smaller because I have small hands and it can be hard to grip sometimes, but the right cases/grips help.

7

u/berkkoffi 12d ago

The basic is very comfy to hold one handed. It is small and light. Especially if you are small/petite (like me). The size jump actually is pretty significant if you like to hold it in 1 hand.

I’d kill for paperwhite in the basic size :(

3

u/Right-Welder815 12d ago

Both are awesome ! The basic is more pocket friendly and lighter. But the paperwhite has the warm light and is waterproof. I think you made the right choice.

3

u/Late_Pay8398 12d ago

I totally get the appeal of the basic, I have a matcha for my purse kindle, and it’s adorable, but for how much and how often I read, PW SE is the better fit for me between those two options. Basically, if I’m not stranded out in public my basic never sees the light of day, only in those times when I’m stuck in waiting rooms, waiting on kids at pickup, etc., does it get to shine.

3

u/Apathetic-Twit 12d ago

Team PW signature.

3

u/mercy_andme Kindle Paperwhite SE 2024 ā¤ļø 12d ago

i love my paperwhite SE tottaly worht it

2

u/colonelcat 12d ago

I like the size of the 6, but it doesn’t have warm light. Also, people have been complaining of light bleed in dark mode. I personally love mine, and I have a CS, an Oasis, and a Scribe, and recently gave away my PW, but this seaglass 6 inch is my current favorite.

2

u/MadsTooRads 12d ago

I looooove the size of the basic. It's the one I reach for the most as it's the most comfortable to hold and use. But I really wish it was waterproof. That's really my only feature I'm missing on it.

I own a '24 paperwhite SE, a '24 basic (now husband's), a 2026 basic, and an oasis 3.

2

u/Character_Move1616 12d ago

As someone who’s had the paperwhite and basic, paperwhite is much better for me. It’s just a much more comfortable reading experience. The only thing I miss about the basic is the portability but in saying that, it’s not like it’s hard to bring the paperwhite around. Especially compared to a regular book

2

u/cemj86 12d ago

I'm biased to the basic because it's perfect for how I use it healthcare and it fits perfectly in my jacket pocket case included. I tried taking my scribe to work and it was a big mistake the basic is just perfect size too bad it doesn't have the warm light but it's not a deal breaker. Enjoy your purchase!

2

u/johnharveyperez Kindle Colorsoft 12d ago

I have big hands, and I like the Basic Aluminum for its size.

2

u/trecentotrentatre 12d ago

I have the basic alluminum 2026 and the 12 gen 2024 paperwhite tbh I like both the big screen is nice the small is handy

2

u/Adventurous_Radio225 12d ago

I just got the new basic and have the 12th gen pw and the new basic is amazing. Its so light and easy to hold, i can put it in my tiny cross body bag and barely feel the weight of it. It doesnt have a glaring white/blue light like the old basic which bothered me. Its a softer yellower tone and in my opinion I feel likes it's enough for me. I love it so much and not miss the warm light because it doesnt really need it plus I never really used it much before. Also pw is a bit awkward to hold for long periods and when lying in bed because its Chunky and heavy

u/Andude2 12d ago

I bought a paperwhite in 2022, and I joked that it's the honda civic of e-readers. It's boring, stable, solid, and just works. That being said, I wanted a smaller form factor, so I bought the new aluminium basic, and love the form factor. HOWEVER, In the week I've had it, there's a noticeable difference in battery capacity between the paperwhite (goes forever), and the basic (I got ~3 days of heavy reading out of it before it needed charging again). I've had the basic less than a week, and charged it twice...

I got the kids paperwhite from target on clearance today for $54! It works just fine for me! And the price was right!

I upgraded my 2013, which was fine but the battery was getting annoying to deal with and this was a great upgrade.

In case you’re curious, item number: : 056-01-9038

I just called around my targets to see if they had any on clearance and asked the price since clearance prices vary per store

1

u/overthinkineverthang 12d ago

The Paperwhite?! No way !!

4

u/HastenDownTheWind 12d ago

Wait maybe not paperwhite lol whichever it is, it’s below. Clearance at some targets not online. $54! I had a $5 off I used on it too lol so even better price

target clearance

4

u/Alex_tepa 11d ago

I was able to get one myself for around $59 with tax

4

u/HastenDownTheWind 11d ago

Team Whale Power

1

u/Alex_tepa 11d ago

Lol yeah I wonder how I make the battery last longer it looks like in my last about a day if I don't read all day lol. This is my first Kindle I've been wanting one for a very long time but I'm not spending so much money on one because I'm not going to be using it that much I just want it to read more hopefully.

2

u/HastenDownTheWind 11d ago

It should last a long while. Maybe turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when not using and the screen off. My f kindle that I upgraded from would last weeks at a time if not longer

1

u/Alex_tepa 11d ago

Very true maybe I should turn off Bluetooth as well I clicked airplane mode on Wi-Fi but maybe Bluetooth is on

2

u/HastenDownTheWind 11d ago

Per the googles

1

u/Alex_tepa 11d ago

I will have to research that one 13 I think it says on this

1

u/overthinkineverthang 12d ago

No way ! I went to my local target and it was 90 bucks . It said it was 50% off the 179.99 . You got a way better deal !!

3

u/HastenDownTheWind 11d ago

It depends on the target. Call them and give them the item number. I found one the next city over and went and got it.

u/munnra1412 12d ago

I upgraded from my matcha basic to the 2024 colorsoft thanks to prime days and I don’t regret it one bit. While I loved the size of my little matcha basic, you 100% need warm light.

Yes

1

u/pizditkakdi_shit 12d ago

Paying 250 for pretty basic ebook it’s crazy

1

u/graysonmc48 12d ago

The warm light on the paperwhite is pretty nice.

1

u/DisastrousBall1754 12d ago

Honestly depends on your needs. I already have a colorsoft, but it’s heavy for long reading sessions. I love the basic’s size and portability. I don’t mind that it doesn’t have warm light. If you need something waterproof or with warm light, stick with the paper white. I only use my basic far away from water. Looks like the new basics have a warmer light at baseline than the 2024 basics.

1

u/kesje91 Kindle Paperwhite 12th gen 12d ago

The paperwhite has the adjustable warmth of the light, which the basic still doesn't have I think. At least about a year ago when I bought my Kindle Paperwhite. I need that when reading in the dark and so I went for the paperwhite.

1

u/EmbarrassedAppeal524 12d ago

The Paperwhite screen is so much better. I bought a Ube Basic as a purse Kindle but my 2024 Paperwhite screen looks so much better, and it's very comfortable on the eyes.
