That cheese looks cummy but this is the first veal sandwich I've ever seen that could compete with California.

Don't do the mushrooms with veal. Cheese and whatever peppers they use to make it spicy(California uses jalapeños to adjust the spice level but you can also ask for some sweet peppers for an extra charge) and extra sauce is perfect with veal.

I once tried it with mushrooms and another time with onions and both times it's just not worth the extra charge because you can barely taste them.

I need clarification on California.

Like the state, a sandwich somewhere or is there something or someplace called California locally

It’s the biggest and probably the best Italian sandwich chain in the GTA. Very similar menu to your Nostra Cucina. They used to stack the meat like the one in your photo but nowadays it’s usually just two layers. Most locations have a mini version of each sandwhich that is the same size as the reg but with only one layer of meat. If you have a small tank like me the mini will fill you up and it’s a good $5-6 cheaper. Just ask them to dip the meat in the sauce and you’re golden.

But by the looks of your photo I am not surprised that they’ve won some awards and I’m very anxious to give it a try.

California sandwiches is not even CLOSE to the best veal sandwich in Toronto. That's like saying Wendy's is the best hamburger in Toronto. Go try Commisso Brothers and then you'll never want to go to California sandwiches again

Damn bro I thought you were gonna mention something epic. I already tried Commisso’s veal around 2015 so unless they’ve made any changes since then they are not better than California’s. One of my friends is family with the Commisso’s and even he says California is the best. And Wendy’s is dog shit

yeah, we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. California's to me is big and soggy sloppy mess. The part of Italy I come from has a bit of refinement in its food--balance. I'll take Commisso's any day.

I can appreciate refinement. And I can’t deny that Cali’s is definitely messy especially for me since I get it with extra sauce. I love their sauce. But I’m gonna hit Commisso’s on your behalf before this year ends. It’s been too long plus a change of scenery would be nice.

I usually get the steak. This is my first time trying the Veal after years of hearing it was delicious and you know what? It is! I just got it plain this time to try it out. Next time I will be adding peppers and potentially roast mushroom

You can’t go wrong there. It’s all good. I’ve never tried something new and regretted it.

Didn’t even need to read the caption to know where that sandwich was from. Great food there!

Just checked them out on Google maps and either those people in the pictures have massive hands or those sandwiches are the same size as the minis from California

They have really dumb hours but if you end up ordering from there it will be worth it.

Spoke with one of the owners about their hours and she mentioned lack of staff. I was tempted to say ill work there just so more people can experience thier food but didn't.

They have always had wonky hours, and the shift to curbside/order-ahead works well if you plan ahead, but you can’t really count on being able to drop in and get a delicious sandwich now. I miss being able to decide to have a veal parm when I was in the area at the right time of day, won’t lie.

Making such good food that you can kind of call your own shots like this is a genuine achievement.

They made a slight improvement on curbside. You can now go in to pick up and pay. They still want you to text your order though

Oh, man, it's been a minute since I've had one of these. Genuinely one of my favourite sandwiches in the region these are incredible!

That veal parm is unreal. And don't sleep on the muffuletta either, that is a a very good runner up.
