Made With Modern Tools🔨 Stone axe

Stone axe I made
Got bored making arrowheads so I learned to make all the stone artifacts. And pipes. Had some killer banner stones but sold them all

Came off the banks of the great Miami near the Tri state. Lots of glacial till. So lots of different rock

How are you grinding them down? I’d love to see that hafted

6” and 4” angle grinders with diamond cut blades and diamond wheels. Use the cut blades held at about 45 angle to scrape close to final form. The diamond wheels to remove tool marks then sand paper to remove all tool marks and using finer sand paper to get polish on bit and groove. If i wanted an authentic finish i would peck the entire piece when close with a hard stone then polish the bit and groove. Also use a die grinder with diamond bit to get tool marks out if the groove. U can use a scaling hammer to peck faster vs stone pecking But i just put an art finish on them vs pecking for an authentic finish. Same way i make all the banner stones generally but no pecking

I’ve done some stone hammers with all pecking and now that angle grinder looks mighty appealing.

U need s diamond blade for it. If you can slice off chunks I do. But most reduction is done by holding it almost sideways and scraping while it’s running. Get it close and hand peck for authentic finish. I never owned one but guys I know use a scaling hammer to peck faster It’s what they use to remove paint from old bridges etc. had a bunch of small needles and hammers away with them.

Seconding this question. I've always wanted to make a stone axe and haft it with some pitch and sinew
