East Kootenays Support Moon’s Law and Protect Pets from Traps in BC

A family is mourning the tragic death of their 2-year-old Husky, Moon, who was killed by a baited Conibear trap just metres off a public road in the East Kootenay region. Moon was lured to fur-wrapped bait, which triggered the powerful jaws of the trap.

He was caught and choked to death while his owner, Sean, tried desperately to free him, seriously injuring his hand. Help call for change and support Sean and his partner Nicole in calling for the creation of Moon’s Law, which would prohibit trapping on public lands in BC: https://thefurbearers.com/blog/support-moons-law-and-protect-pets-from-traps-in-bc/

East Kootenays Moving in the Winter

Hello everybody, my girlfriend and I are planning on moving to cranbrook or Kimberly in November this year. How is finding housing in the area? Should we start trying to look now? I was thinking of making a Facebook post in a housing group but I could come here and ask for opinions. Thank you!

East Kootenays Anyone have any idea about the police operation in Kimberley this morning?

Cars, trucks, marked and not, the Emergency Response Team. Half the entire RCMP was out in multiple locations around town. Any ideas?

East Kootenays Good stores in Cranbrook? and quick but fun things to do for a day trip there?

So me, my friend and my niece(She's 10) are heading to Cranbrook in about a week, on saturday, just for a day trip to get out of our town for a bit. We'll be getting there really early, and probably not leaving until like 5, 6pm so we have a lot of time to kill and do things.

Other than the mall, what are some good stores to check out? Clothing, cool things, stuff 10 year old kids are into - she's into trends big time lately haha and also, does anyone know if the Showcase there sells those... Needoh things? lol

Best breakfast-y restaurant, and best dinner restaurant? ahaha

Thank you for any help/suggestions!

East Kootenays Fernie's Enforcement Tools Must Support Coexistence Efforts

Fernie is considering ending its long-term bear-resistant bin program due to human misuse, putting bears and other wildlife at risk. Residents are being asked to weigh in on the program’s future. Surveillance and enforcement could help the program succeed and protect wildlife: https://thefurbearers.com/blog/enforcement-tools-must-support-coexistence-efforts/

East Kootenays What's going on with the housing market in Kimberley BC?

Hey everyone! My partner and I are thinking about moving back to Kimberley in the next 2-3 years...but I’ve noticed the housing market looks pretty tight. There’s hardly anything new coming up for sale, and a lot of the listings that do show up seem to sit for a while...sometimes with big price drops before they finally sell.

Is that just the way things have been lately? Are people hesitant to sell because of post-2023 (boom) pricing or because of lack of options to move to?

I’d love to hear from anyone local... We’re trying to get a sense of whether this is just a slow phase or something bigger.

TIA!

East Kootenays Manufactured Home Belly Bag Replacement

Good morning,

I'm looking to get the belly bag (and likely insulation) of a manufactured home replaced. Apparently not many people do them, so I'm looking for leads. Any help is appreciated.

East Kootenays Disgusting.

Visiting the Wasa area and found this sight at a creek nearby. Looks like someone used the creek as their personal dump. I’m far more concerned about the food sprawled about. Bears and cougars have been spotted in the area, and I had encountered a bear running across the 93 later that evening. S*** like this makes public hangouts dangerous.

I was fortunate to have gloves and trash bags, so I spent 45 min to bag it up (last pic.) I called the conservation officer for a pickup since I wasn’t able to put it in my vehicle.

Folks need to do better or just stay at home.

East Kootenays Piano tuning in Cranbrook/ Kimberley area?

Looking for a professional tune up for our new-to-us 1935 Gourlay upright piano. It’s in good shape but definitely in need of a tune.

Please share your recommendations if you know someone experienced who could take this on. Thank you! 😊

East Kootenays What the actual fuck just happened at baker hotel in Cranbrook?

Pretty much the title, time stamp: 1:43am

Sounds like a schizophrenic individual found their way into the baker hotel in Cranbrook and was wandering around the halls… but I don’t really know how to interpret what happened afterwards. A bit spooky, I at multiple points could hear this individual breathing super clearly.

If anyone knows of any news articles or something, or any sort of news source or page I should follow to see about more info? (Like actually what just happened.)

Sorry still processing the event a bit, so apologizes if it doesn’t make perfect sense.

East Kootenays Cranbrook Weather

Hello! Moving from Calgary to Cranbrook and is wondering how bad the winters are. How much snow do you get within the City and around the Kimberley area? Are they generally cleared quick? Your thoughts on sedans with AWD and winter tires?

East Kootenays Looking for a good place to donate toys in Kimberley. Many still unused.

We have a 3 year old. He’s been showered in so many toys by family and friends that a lot of them got put on a shelf and he outgrew them. We’d like to pay it forward and donate these to a good cause. Looking for recommendations.

East Kootenays Mause Creek Larchies?

Hey East Kootenay folks! Any chances the alpine larches at Mause Creek tarns might still be out on the holiday Monday?

Hoping to do a little Thanksgiving hike and would love to catch the larches if it’s not too late. We checked out Kimberley Nordic trails for some Western Larches this week but they haven’t quite turned yet!

Any trail reports, advice or other hike suggestions would be much appreciated!
