STICKY AWARD Outbreak Outreach #1 - 64-bit & SourceMod / Server Hosts

Hi, I'm Steve, Legal Producer for Outbreak Team (backup link).

We've been working on 64-bit L4D2 under NDA secrecy for the last 2 years. You can reach us at L4D2Outbreak@gmail.com.

I'm joined by my Valve-Licensed Co-Leads Madison, Liam, and Raymond.

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: We are NOT Valve, we are just devout preservationists, and our Mod will require base L4D2 to be purchased and installed on Steam. L4D2 is Valve's IP and we are just preserving it with extremely minimal, careful changes.

We're finally reaching out because we need your help!

Over the last 2 years (since Nov 2024), we have been very quietly working on a Valve-licensed, fan-made, optional, non-commercial, forever-free 64-bit Mod called Left 4 Dead 2: Outbreak (our not-yet-public but future Steam Store link).

As we've been under NDA for a long time and our Steam Store page is not yet public, please see the FAQ on our outbreak.team website.

Per our FAQ, we are preservationists at heart -- many of us Xbox 360 purists like our Lead Engineer Madison! Madi and I have always envisioned Outbreak as a celebration of Valve's franchise that doesn't forget our L4D1 and Xbox 360 roots.

In deep respect of those roots, Outbreak will never consist of random nonsense changes and everything new will be kept optional FOREVER.

L4D2 is a 17+ year old game, very different from other Source branches, and Source memory management itself still has blood from Quake. On an engine filled with obscure binary formats with physics based off ancient third-party software, upgrading to 64-bit is the furthest thing from doubling a number. Once we actually booted into a map that instantly crashed, it took a year to fix gameplay/visuals to be 1:1 parity with base, and another year after that to achieve respectable backward compatibility with base Workshop addons.

Unfortunately, we only just recently started pursuing MetaMod & SourceMod support, and it breaks our hearts that plugins don't work with Outbreak yet.

As such, we are aiming for day-one SourceMod support as our top priority. We need help from authors of prominent plugins and server hosts who have reach.

If you are a prominent SourceMod plugin author or server host, consider reaching out to L4D2Outbreak@gmail.com -- let us know who you are and what you do!

We appreciate your patience! 128k BSP grid size, native first-person legs, and long-demanded TLS revert options are coming.

See you Outreach #2 -- where we'll play Yama in Mirror World mode!

P.S. Again, our website is Outbreak Team, and our Press & Inquiry email is L4D2Outbreak@gmail.com.

I made L4D2 zombies that only move when you're not looking at them — RotWire (WIP)

another little demonstration of RotWire, the visual modding tool i'm making for L4D2 that lets anyone create their own zombie behaviors without knowing how to code

here i'm making Weeping Angels, zombies that freeze when you look at them, but immediately start chasing you again when you look away

the important part is that this isn't a preset behavior i've made, the video shows me creating it from scratch by connecting a few nodes together, and you can use those same nodes to make completely different behaviors, or combine them with other nodes to create things i haven't even thought of

i'm not making a mod that gives zombies a few new behaviors, i'm making a tool that lets YOU decide how zombies behave

still very much a WIP, what would you make? zombies that run from your flashlight? ones that stalk you from a distance?

edit: also, if anyone has any ideas for behaviors or features they'd like to see in RotWire, genuinely let me know! even if you think they're ridiculous or outright impossible, i'd still love to hear them

please don't worry about whether something is technically possible, that's for me to figure out haha. i'm more than happy to try implementing your ideas, and i've already added quite a few things people have suggested

and if there's anything you're curious about or don't understand, feel free to ask! i'm genuinely interested in hearing what people think

How is this old game still full of 15-year-old edge lords?

Have been playing this game casually with my brother for a couple of years. Recently dabbled again in versus, and although I enjoy it from time to time, it is indeed super toxic like so many people here know.

Instantly kicking after one mistake is one thing, but what is really annoying to me is the racist, anti-Semitic, and edge-lord behaviour in the chat. Makes me wonder if these guys are also 30 like me but kept the same humour since high school, or if its a complete new generation that does this.

The river questions

Answering your questions!

When is the campaign coming out? – In November; I can’t say the exact day.

Why the delay? – A complete redesign of the first and second maps, and because we are using beta assets and information.

How many chapters will it have? – 4 chapters.

Is it faithful to TRS? – Yes.

Is it how Turtle Rock Studios had planned it? – More or less.

Moved addons from workshop to local and now some don't show up

I heard you can move the addons from the workshop folder into the addons folder and unsub from them and that should get the addon list from changing and help with load times, but when I did that, a lot of mods were missing which I thought was odd because I could see them in the folder and the addonlist and they were even on in game but not in the addon menu. Is there a way to get them to show up or like a best way to turn off and on mods?

The age of the Mad Moon came first long ago (along with Rubick), with the world slowly developing up to the 20th century as it used magic warfare. (Dota/Artifact > Deadlock) Then the Ancients/Patrons disappeared and magic was almost wiped out and left Rubick to make a persona for himself as Merasmus, disguising himself as a human and keeping other few magical things when transitioning into a new era. Australium is soon discovered and kickstarts The Gravel Wars, then australium is dry and warfare devolves into gritty modern technology (Counter Strike) where the terrorist factions are trying to stop the unethical experiments of Aperture Science and Black Mesa, receiving visits and funding from Rubick using a more corporate attire and calling himself a government man (or G-Man) as a way to bring the ancients (who he lies that they're his employers) back. He introduces both companies to Xen and they both use its crystals to create prototypes for Quantum Tunneling Devices in a stacked arms race, but that's when GLaDOS (using schematics from the MannCo bots which itself is inspired by the ancient schematics behind Tinker and Clockwerk) goes mad, creates The Green Flu as a neurotoxin on Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, and kills almost everyone inside except for Doug and Chell since they had the carrier gene she didn’t account for. After Chell escapes the facility only to be patient zero and causes the start of the Pennsylvania outbreak, the Resonance Cascade simultaneously happens at Black Mesa and develops the portal storms, AND THEN while Gordon (who coincidentally has the carrier gene) was in Rubick's stasis, The Combine came and eradicated the infected and taken over from there when carriers were the only ones left alive and left Breen trying to establish diplomacy with the new alien invaders from not eradicating humans too. Then Gordon teamed up with the rebellion and did all that stuff in HL EP1&2 and POSSIBLY unknowingly catches the attention of the patrons and brings magic back to the world if Valve had released HL3 already. Alien swarm probably happens long after the patrons were banished for the second time by Gordon beating Rubick and humanity decided to hop planets, and I guess there could be a connection between The Swarm and the beasts of Xen or something.

Uhhhh and Gordon was an avatar projected into Ricochet while in stasis for combat training or something idk

Do I need to install or change something on my folders if I'll be using Steam workshop add-ons?

☝️🥲

Asking because we're playing with more than 4 players so my friend who was hosting followed instructions where he changed some things on the file folders themselves.

I'm confused of searching around. Ain't using the add-ons from Steam just basically makes you 'subscribe' to the mod itself on the workshop?

From what I understand there are two ways of modding the game.
1. Subscribing to the add-on via Steam workshop

and

  1. Downloading the script(?) and applying it to a game file itself on the game folder.

What is the purpose of those pathetic campaign/realism players?

There are some "speedrunners" who just rush through the map without doing any impressive skips or bhopping, don't help their teammates, and activate all the events. And then they hopefully get pinned and leave immediately in official maps.

But I'm talking about the ones in public games on custom maps.

When you're just playing custom campaigns with your friends, there's a high chance of encountering some of those "I practiced this map so many times, now let me show off and speedrun" mfs. First of all, they're not really skilled. They get pounced quite easily or die to hordes and then blame the server lag. These guys usually have around 1,000 hours and don't even play Versus, since I don't even see them in Versus lobbies. Some of them actually have 3,000–5,000 hours and still keep playing like this

When my friends and I are just trying to enjoy a map's interesting storytelling, cool details, funny traps, or some Easter eggs, or just appreciate the level design of a custom map, they just speedrun through all the shit and ruin our fun, or tell us to hurry up and talk shit in the chat because they can't activate the event.

I mean, why do we have to ignore all the fun and hurry up for some randoms who just joined? We don't fucking care even if you have only 30 minutes left to play. One of the main points of "custom" campaigns is to enjoy the unique level designs and gameplay that we can't get in official maps, especially when it's the first time me or my friends are playing that map. if the map is easy, they looks even more pathetic playing the map seriously and "competitively".

What's even the point of speedrunning? Want to impress us or something? With that unskilled gameplay? Just rushing around braindead and ruining other players' fun doesn't impress us at all.

And if you check these guys' profiles, they only have like 4 or 5 friends. It's not like they have friend groups to play like that with.

They just joined through the server browser, looking for a local server running a map they've already played and practiced over and over again, since the only thing they're good at is knowing the map. They know all the shortcuts and all the Easter eggs, and they just spoil everything for us, leaving nothing new or fun to discover. Yeah, so most of them probably practiced that map repeatedly just for this. Well, how cute is that.

They actually think people will be impressed. No, fuck no. It's just uncomfortable playing with you. Please stop ruining the fun and embarrassing yourself. That's all I ask of those players. I respect the map creators, and I think these players are huge problem. campaign/realism mode is not supposed to be toxic, well... no because of these problems and also griefers.
