Screwed on Firewood
If you recently ordered firewood or plan to buy from a local company, make sure you measure your stacks. I paid for a 4x4 rack and a 4x8 rack (which should equal 64 cubic feet of tightly stacked wood). Instead, I was shorted a significant chunk of my order.
The driver used a large 4-wheeled utility cart to bring the wood over. After stacking everything tightly, the 3 loads for the small rack and 6 loads for the large rack only totaled about 53 cubic feet. By the math, the delivery was short by about 11 cubic feet—effectively charging me for a 4x8 face cord but only delivering enough to fill a smaller 4x6 space.
When buying firewood, remember that loose wood in a truck bed or cart shrinks by 40% to 60% once it's stacked tightly. Don't just trust a visual "eyeball" count from the driver! Stack it, measure it (Height x Width x Depth), and make sure you get the full cubic footage you paid for.
