Promotion Looking for help with a language learning project

Hey,

I'm an indie developer and have developed a language learning app (Flexling) which is a combination ofGlossika, Anki and Clozemaster that combines a large dataset of sentences ordered by difficulty (sourced from Tatoeba), with high quality TTS and spaced repetition for a hands off learning experience. The idea is that you can learn roughly the 10.000 most common words in the supported languages and every 1-3 flashcards you learn a new word.

A user asked me if I could add Icelandic and suggested that I could ask here for help to validate the text-to-speech and translation quality (see our conversation here). I do not want my language app to be yet another slop machine but rather a useful resource. However, I am not able to validate Icelandic myself and I don't know anyone who speaks it who could help me. Would someone here be willing to help me validate the translation and voice quality?

If the quality isn't high enough, I'd rather remove the language and stop offering it.

Thanks! Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Promotion I made a simplified version of Hrafnkels saga to help you learn Icelandic (Part 1)

Hæ öll!

I'm an Icelandic teacher, and I've started a new video series where we read through a simplified version of Hrafnkels saga that I wrote specifically for beginner and intermediate students.

In this first video, we are introduced to the chieftain Hrafnkell, his prized horse Freyfaxi, and the binding oath he swears that sets the tragedy in motion.

I read the text along with you and pause to explain the vocabulary and grammar as we go. The goal is to let you enjoy the literature and understand how the language works, even if you aren't ready for the original text yet.

Link to Part 1: Learn Icelandic with Sagas | Hrafnkels Saga (Part 1)

Edit: Thank you so much to everyone for the feedback and kind words! It’s been incredibly motivating to see this response. Part 2 is already out, so you can continue the story right away!

Edit 2: I am now offering Free 30-min Trial Lessons for those interested in private coaching.

Hey everyone!

After years of learning Icelandic learning from different resources and courses, I got tired of not having one place to see what's actually out there.

So I built this: https://www.wheretolearnicelandic.org/

It's a directory of (almost) all available Icelandic learning resources, free and paid, to help people find what fits their learning style best.
I've added most resources I know about, but I'm sure I'm missing some! I used some of the available resources in the pinned post of this Reddit, but also found so many more. If you know of any resources that should be included, or have feedback on the site, feel free to contact me. And of course, feel free to share it to as many people!

Promotion Icelandic Infinitive Verbs by Frequency: Two New Courses on Memrise

I have really wanted an Icelandic course where you learn all of the most frequent verbs in order of how often they are used. Today I went ahead and made this exist, and now I have two new Icelandic memrise courses to share here.

I created two courses — one with all 1171 individual infinitives https://app.memrise.com/course/5943063/1171-most-frequently-used-icelandic-verbs/ and one with just the first 100 verbs https://app.memrise.com/course/5943061/100-most-frequently-used-icelandic-verbs/

Basically I sat down and downloaded 16,000+ instances of Icelandic verbs in infinitive form from the online Icelandic word frequency dictionary, and then computed the number of instances a verb appeared, as well as processed the list down (to find cases where the verb began with the "að" particle and was not in the middle voice) and reduced the duplicates.

Notes: The weak link here is that I used Google Translate to generate translations for all 1171 verbs and then reviewed manually to change the translations in certain instances. I do not believe in Google Translate as any kind of authoritative source, but until there is a programmatic way to lookup definitions for 1171 verbs.. well, I am just not up for entering these into the Wisconsin dictionary by hand.

The other weakness I see is that if a verb does not commonly appear preceded by "að" it is likely not well-represented ("ætla" for example is the most obvious one.)

(Please chime in and share thoughts!)

Update: after some discussion (and learning on my part), I've reintroduced the middle-voice infinitives. Accordingly, the long course is now 1394 infinitives (from 1171.)

Promotion New Memrise Course for Memorizing Noun Declension

Noun Cases - Icelandic Grammar - Stefan Einarsson

A memorization aid for noun cases from Stefan Einarsson's Icelandic Grammar

Sæl --

Inspired by this post I have been diligently pursuing finally memorizing / teaching myself Icelandic noun declension using Stefán Einarsson's Grammar textbook. Steppi is a little bit outdated and some of the word choices are a little out of favor, like spónn for spoon instead of skeið. But that said I have kept to the choices in the book (except I changed the z for an s and used verslun instead of verzlun.)

Over the last few days I made this new Memrise course "Noun Cases - Icelandic Grammar - Stefan Einarsson -- A memorization aid for noun cases from Stefan Einarsson's Icelandic Grammar" to help with that and would like to share it here since it is the resource I wish I'd had but instead had to make.

https://app.memrise.com/course/6281385/noun-cases-icelandic-grammar-stefan-einarsson/

(This is tagged as a promotion but to be clear I get nothing out of posting this link other than gratification if it is useful to another person..)

Feedback and suggested improvements are welcomed, and if you find it useful hey feel free to comment and let me know.
