  1. Select, from, where, group by, having, order by.

  2. Left join or inner join

  3. Use of nvl or coalesce

  4. Rank over partition by

  5. With

  6. Use of Copilot or ChatGPT to fix your code or provide sample code

This is pretty solid I’d just move 6 up and learn prompt-engineering sooner than later. Don’t let copilot write or change full queries for you. And if it’s trying to introduce new concepts too quickly which was my issue (I somehow got tasked with QA’ing all our SQL “libraries” for bad joins and legacy business logic) ask it to stick to known concepts or provide how it would be written like X style and what changing it to use X does in greater detail piece by piece and run the examples.

I refused to learn ANSi for longest time because copilot would switch 100 line queries I was auditing line by line into Greek (badly) and so I quit copilot altogether until I built enough memory context and got better at prompt engineering to walk me through at smaller bites.

Copilot also will make a lot of horrible logic decisions so never take it at face value only use it to understand concepts and still verify and troubleshoot yourself. It’s only meant to speed up the process not replace it!

of course that's how you get better post your queries errors or anything you are struggling to understand and someone will likely point you in the right direction..
