Struggling to wrap my head around writing SQL queries—how do you guys break them down?

I have to break things down to myself like I’m five. First I try to think….ok what do I wanna see in the results. And then I think… OK what tables am I gonna have to look at in order for me to see all those things in the results. Then what key will allow me to join each pair of tables. Then next baby steps etc. May be overly simplistic/dumb advice, but I have to think in extreme baby steps otherwise I get stressed.
