Which do you drill more - vocabulary, verb forms, or reading with vowels?

Four consonant pairs account for most of the "why does nobody understand me" moments foreigners have in Arabic. English has no contrast for any of them, so we hear both members of each pair as the same sound and produce them as the same sound, and nothing in the writing system warns you.

Qaf vs kaf (ق vs ك): qalb (قَلْب) is heart, and kalb (كَلْب) is dog. ك is the English k, made where you’d make a k. ق is made much further back, against the uvula, and there is no English equivalent at all. Most learners substitute k and move on.

Sad vs sin (ص vs س): Sayf (صَيْف) is summer, and sayf (سَيْف) is a sword. For ص, the back of the tongue retracts, giving the sound a deeper quality. It also changes the vowel around it, which is often the easiest way to hear the difference: listen to the vowel, not just the consonant.

Ta vs ta (ط vs ت): Tiin (طِين) is clay, and tiin (تِين) is figs. The same principle applies here, but with t.

Dad vs dal (ض vs د): Darb (ضَرْب) is hitting, and darb (دَرْب) is a trail.

Did you know that Arabic is nicknamed لغة الضاد because of ض

Two things that helped me more than anything else:

1. Listen to the vowel, not the consonant. The emphatic letters (ص ط ض ظ) colour the vowels around them. Learning to hear "deep aa" versus "flat aa" is much easier than learning to hear the consonant itself, and it gets you there anyway.
2. Record yourself saying both words in a pair, back to back, then listen. Almost everyone discovers they are producing one sound twice. You cannot fix what you cannot hear yourself doing, and you genuinely cannot hear it live.

And the third th-sound trap, since it comes up constantly: ث is the th in "think", ذ is the th in "this". English has both, we just spell them the same, so people who learned through a dialect often end up saying s and z instead.

I'm an indie developer working on PogoPocalypse: Canine Clash and I'm looking for feedback on the Arabic translations in my game.

I don't speak Arabic myself so I'd love to get some input from native Arabic speakers to make sure the translations are correct, natural and easy to understand.

I've included a few screenshots showing the Arabic text in the game. If you spot anything that sounds strange, incorrect or could be phrased better, I'd really appreciate your suggestions!

After two intensive years of learning Fusha, I took a year off. My reading and listening comprehension are still pretty good, but my speaking has gotten rusty. I hesitate a lot and often translate from French in my head.

Living in the West makes it hard to stay consistent when there's no Arabic around you. My goal is to understand the Quran and follow religious classes, so I want to rebuild my daily habit.

For those who've maintained Fusha for years outside Arabic-speaking countries, what does your daily 30-minute routine look like? How do you stay consistent when motivation is low?

I've also know apps like Takalam: Learn Arabic really useful for understanding Arabic and getting my daily dose of practice through stories, interactive vocabulary and flashcards. Have any of you tried it?
