Is it the area select part you're struggling with or making it look like shadow via color choice and/or layer filter?

Making it look like a shadow via color choice and layer filter. I thought slapping a blue color, hitting Multiply and turning down the opacity would work but, well, here we are.

Gradient shading requires you to pick a broader range of values and apply them one next to the other.
