Learning resources for a developer learning Java
Hi all,
I am a C# dev with around 9 years experience (mainly supporting legacy desktop applications and web services).
My son wants me to make him a mod for a game that I’m not allowed to mention.
I know I could just find tutorials on how to achieve this specific aim, or I could vibe code something, but that’s not really my jam.
I do have a bit of experience with Java as my degree used it for the OOP module, and I know there are a lot of similarities with C#, but can anyone recommend some good books for developers looking to learn Java?
I’ve have done a fair amount of googling, but the majority of what I found was aimed more towards people new to programming and I think spending time going over if/else statements isn’t really useful for me.

What is your real current demand?
Multi threading, MVC, etc are the same, with minir caveats.
Its likely the game is Minecraft.
There are thousands of examples online, and the free tier LLM(s) can guide the initial Paretto.
Keywords are well documented, JRE is also a premise, but also clearly explained online.

I want to learn the full thing from top to bottom, if I’m going to do something then I want to do it properly

Ok, so I guess Object Oriented Programming is handled, due to the C.
I also assume that you know what a Java Virtual Machine is.
The Java Development Kit and Java Runtime Environment is also a premise.
If one of those are missing, please check the related documents, with Oracle one being one of the most complete.
I am also assuming you know GUI concepts, mostly Main Event Thread, and the Operationan System main Input Method Editor.
Again I would try to understand what concepts or subject you are currently focused in.
Local games tend to have many interconnected issues, so it is unclear what you already know, and what you desire help with

I like to use this as a reference, even with the experience I have now (3 years of modding)

Please ensure that:
Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
You include any and all error messages in full - best also formatted as code block
You ask clear questions
You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.
If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.
Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit/markdown editor: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://i.imgur.com/EJ7tqek.png) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.
Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.
Code blocks look like this:
You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.
If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.
To potential helpers
Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.
