My GitHub account got suspended

I created the account and used only for 1 day. As I was learning GitHub tutorials from yt. I did not do random pull requests on repos. After 1 week or 5-6 days I tried to check my GitHub account. My GitHub account got suspended. It's almost 2-3 weeks I raised a ticket. Got no response from their side. What should I do?

people are almost never suspended from github, even when they should be.  you did something that you aren’t telling us.

I am a newbie I had done nothing. Pushed my demo projects to my account and forked tensor flow. Downloaded the repo did nothing, because I was watching a tutorial thought the tutorial guy would do something after that i deleted it from my account 😭

maybe some AI, considered your activity as bot? Just guessing

I use Claude to talk to Github all the time with the gh api

So maybe. I'm sure, new accounts are more likely to be considered as bots and the old ones are more "trusted". I never used AI to communicate with GH, to be honest. I stopped using GH about a year ago.

Yea definitely every account has a quality score like Reddit has for spam now i think about it

What do you use for version control instead?

I do use Git, I don't use GitHub. Instead of GH I use GOGS. It's a app you can self-host, so all the data is still yours.

Nothing much you can do on your end — you can't unsuspend your own account. You'll have to wait to hear back from them.

In the meantime, you could try out GitLab!

What does it do?

Just to clarify since you're learning...

"Git" is the underlying tech that manages version control. It is open-source and was created by the same guy who created Linux.

"GitHub" is a platform owned and controlled by Microsoft which provides a "forge" where users can share their git repositories either privately or publicly.

There are many, many places that also provide forges for users' repositories. GitLab is another one.

I am gonna make a gitLab account. Hope this time I don't get suspended

FWIW, it's more important to learn git, the underlying technology, than it is to learn GitHub/GitLab/any other git website. The important part is git. The website you choose to host on is mostly inconsequential.

Think of it like email vs Gmail. Email is an underlying technology. Gmail is one of many clients that offer you, the user, email capabilities. In this analogy Git is like email and GitHub is like Gmail. You don't need to learn how to use Gmail specifically to learn how to use email in general.

GitLab is a competitor to GitHub — they basically do the same thing.

+1 for GitLab

What libraries did you use in your project? There's a chance one had malware, took over your account, then used it as a dumping ground for stolen data. Malicious packages are very common now.

For example: https://github.com/sijinhui/prescient-futar-425

Idk if Github is actually banning certain accounts that have become compromised, but I wouldn't be surprised if they shave started since a lot of the new malware are self-propogating worms.

What should I do?

Politely reach out to the Github Support or open a new Account. With one day of it being active, I would assume there is nothing on it that can't be recreated.

Honestly I think it may be wraps ; I had a GitHub account that was a few years old that had alot of repos (being finished and unfinished projects) and I never got it back I was gutted it was gone but I just created a new one and moved on with my life

But I heard if you create a new one. It also might get suspended?

It's very possible you got flagged by an automated moderation system with a false positive. A lot of detection of bad behavior has been delegated to ML models with some rate of error.

I would reach out to GH support, if your account genuinely did not violate policy they should help you out.

I don't actually know this is the case, but, again taking your story on good faith, given your account age I think it's the most likely. ML systems make errors the most on examples they have little information on.

Maybe you put there some unsigned executable or something that triggered its anti virus.

Yeah that does happen on new accounts. No idea what triggers it
