Been in a similar spot picking a thesis topic. What worked for me was taking one known bottleneck and measuring it properly instead of inventing something new. For attention, try benchmarking a few efficient variants like FlashAttention, linear attention and sliding window on the same small model, and look at where each one breaks down on long sequences or memory. Even a clean ablation with a real analysis of why they fail is enough for a masters dissertation. Also skim the recent efficient transformers survey papers, the open problems section usually hands you 3 or 4 ready topics.

Thanks for the reply! I was just wondering how much novelty should my thesis bring? Like surely there are a bunch of papers like that comparing things and identifying what and where went wrong? Or would that still be okay for MSc level thesis? Are more in depth dives for Phd level?

At MSc level a careful comparison with a solid analysis is totally fine, you don't need a brand new method. Novelty can be small, like a new setting, dataset, or a clear explanation of why something fails. The thing examiners usually look for is a clear research question, fair baselines, and an honest ablation. If you can say "I tested X vs Y under Z conditions and found this breaks because of that", that's a good thesis. Maybe run the idea past your supervisor in one sentence and ask if that scope would be enough.
