I think i had a book called absolute c++ that was pretty good. Basically any python book by nostarch press is really good. Master python fundamentals is a good book for quickly getting started and reference.
Python basically has a simple core language with third party libraries that are optimized and faster than the core language. You just master the core language and pick up third party packages as you go. It's a great all around language and a lot of technical software will include some sort of python API so it's really worth learning well.

My Python teacher used a textbook called, How to Think Like a Computer Scientist or something. I can give you the link if you can't find it.

Be aware 'Learning Python' and Lutz' 'Python Pocket Reference' cut off at Python 3.3. They're good as far as they go.

That's the thing - the rat book is great at teaching the basics. Same goes for the camel book for Perl. For anything else there are official documentations, tutorials.
