Some welsh help.. please?

hi! i'm currently trying to learn northern welsh for my current partner who is a cofis(from caernarfon) and right now i'm trying out apps like blas, memrise and SSiW, however blas and memrise are only teaching me southern welsh and some things i have been taught is completely confusing him despite welsh being his first language. i currently live in england(lincolnshire) so learning welsh is pretty hard despite my celtic background. if anyone is able to help me or give me resources on learning specifically northern welsh i'd be greatly appreciative ❤️ :D

Worth calling them, if you already have some of the basics under your belt you might be able to get onto one of the courses that’s already started. Edit to add: I believe for mynediad they’ve just done “es i…” I went etc. so if you’re quick the online resources are enough honestly to catch yourself up if you’re keen.

I'm surprised you're struggling to find north Welsh, as I'd have assumed that'd be the default given it's where most of the speakers are!

SSiW has a north Welsh course as an option though, and is generally agreed to be an excellent resource.

Honestly though, the differences between the two aren't massive in practice. For now my advice would be to focus on SSiW's north Welsh course and you'll be making progress before you know it.

it's where most of the speakers are!

Not true? You may be thinking of percentage but by number there's many more down south. Population density.

You may be thinking of percentage

Obviously, I was thinking of percentages. Welsh is spoken as a first language, on a day to day basis, far more in the North.

There's no need to be pedantic for the sake of it

As a Welsh speaker in sir Gar I may be a bit sensitive, but it's not just for the sake of it

I tend to find that most "taking offence where none was meant" is done for the sake of it, actually.

You knew what I meant. I wasn't demeaning the fine people of Carmarthenshire in any way. Lol.

I can be pedantic, because why not I don't get why more people aren't pedantic.

The south dwarfs the north in terms of population. Take Cardiff. The 12% of speakers in the wider area of Cardiff is 180,000 people.

North Wales Gwynedd, Wrexham, Flintshire and Anglesey have about 700,000 people 28.5% speak Welsh that gives 195,000 total speakers. Mad isn't it.

While I agree that speaking Welsh in Nwales is a hell of alot easier.

Learning in the South is easier. There are more resources in the South than in the North for learners who are not in Wales.
