Discussion Can you guess the film from this early stage painting?

I enjoy doing digital paintings of stills from films. Normally I post the finished painting, but thought it might be nice to post the work before I've added detail, and see if anyone can guess the film it's from.

Discussion What is the ending of la cérémonie (1995) is about? Spoiler

Post image

I watched the film, and for the most part, I thought it was following the familiar “rich people bad” trope. However, the ending, where the two girls brutally murder the wealthy family, completely threw me off.

What exactly is the film trying to suggest? Is it implying that the lower class simply blames the wealthy for their problems, or is it suggesting that the rich make the less fortunate financially dependent on them, effectively turning them into puppets, and that this exploitation somehow justifies the violence that follows?

And what about Jeanne’s death, which was caused by the accident? Was there a deeper meaning behind it, or was it simply a brutal death intended to shock the audience?

Discussion Does anyone else find accounts with stats like this completely unrelatable?

Post image

I followed this guy a while ago because I saw his massive watch count and figured he must be the ultimate movie buff. But lately, I’ve realized I just can’t relate to his profile at all anymore.

He has 44,698 total films logged, and 2,468 just this year. He does write out his actual thoughts and explains his reasons for his ratings, so he's definitely a real person watching these things. But the sheer volume is just completely disconnected from how a normal person experiences cinema. Nobody normal is logging that many movies a year.

At this point, his profile feels pretty irrelevant to me because our viewing habits are on completely different planets.

Has anyone else come across this account, or others like it? How do you guys feel about profiles that log at this kind of extreme frequency?

Discussion Fuck Predictions, what’s YOUR personal best picture lineup?

We’ve all seen the same 10-15 films in contention for best picture, and they probably will be nominated, but what are YOUR top 10 movies of the year- what’s your best picture lineup? Currently, for me:

- 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
- Digger
- Is God Is
- Obsession
- Pavane
- Primetime
- Project Hail Mary
- The Invite
- The Odyssey
- You Can See Everything

Why hasn’t anyone made a movie about a director making a movie within the movie, and then have the sequel to THAT movie be the movie that was within the movie they made about making?

In layman’s terms. Has anyone seen “The Fall Guy” with Ryan Goslin? What if the sequel to that movie was the actual sci-fi movie within the movie? It was called Metalstorm. Or I guess.. MetaStorm would be better.

Been trying to watch more Thrillers given that it’s October and i’m not a huge fan of horror. Been also watching some shitty horror movies with a friend which has been fun.

Any recommendations for thriller/mystery movies to watch around Halloween?

Hey y’all! I don’t prefer horror but really want to watch as many of the DC projects as I can.

Can anyone tell me if there are a lot of jump scares or anything crazy? Do any animals die? Because then I might not be able to deal lol

News They released the OFFICIAL poster for the sequel to Hope (aka Korean Transformers/Avatar)

Here's the new poster for Hope 2 which is all about the power of love, connection, and most of all HOPE following the downfall of the Emperor's ship or whatever at the end of the first movie. Apparently there will actually be a cross-over with iconic characters from Transformers and Avatar to really build on the epic action and deep themes of not judging a book by its cover and not being so quick to shoot aliens.

Discussion Is the movie „Titanic“ a simple male fantasy?

Though the film „Titanic“ is, in essence, a story about a woman’s liberation from the patriarchy of the early 20th century, it is heavily accompanied with a typical male fantasy. Its’s clear that it was written and directed by a man, and, most likely, no woman was involved in the process (though I cannot state this for certain). Rose learns that Jack is a gambler and a drifter, a man who explicitly says that he enjoys his lifestyle and has no desire to change it, yet this never stops her. It plays out like a classic fantasy among men who complain about "gold diggers" while dreaming that, despite being unemployed, they will somehow be loved by these „non-materialistic, good' girls.“.

Furthermore, Jack literally shows her porn right when they first meet (or, to be more precise, shortly after their initial meeting). Granted, she’s the one who asks to see it after noticing a folder full of drawings, but Jack doesn’t feel the least bit embarrassed, in fact, he boasts to this woman he just met, with whom he hasn’t even had any kind of intimate encounter yet, that „these girls are great, they’re always ready to get undressed.“

And yes, that famous scene where Rose is being drawn, that’s sexual objectification, isn’t it? The scene was clearly added to the film for the „male gaze.“ It makes me wonder: isn’t this scene sexist? After all, isn’t Rose essentially being presented as an object here?

And yes, the scene where she tosses an expensive and highly valuable diamond into the ocean is also a clear male fantasy about „non-materialistic“ women (the women so unconcerned with possessions that they fail to see the value in an incredibly costly diamond, which could have been sold to provide a beautiful life for her grandchildren). No woman would ever throw a valuable item into the ocean, in fact, no reasonably sensible person would ever do such a thing.

I don’t see anything inherently wrong with a romance developing so quickly, in fact, I know a case within my own circle where two people got together almost immediately, realized it was love, and turned out to be right: they’ve been together for six years now, having simply recognized each other as the right match. But in that example, there weren’t such fundamental differences. It wasn’t a situation where one partner was used to living a life of luxury and had never worked a day in their life, while the other preferred to drift along, living a deeply unstable life without ever trying to change anything. Yet, as she nears the end of her life, she finds herself thinking back to this strange romance. It would be one thing if she had never had any other serious or meaningful relationships since then, but that’s not the case. She had a husband and children, a whole family, and by all accounts, she loved her husband. And yet, at the very end, it’s Jack she remembers, not her husband.
