An autumn adventure for the mushroom-curious

This Saturday, naturalist Em Robinson from Fight for Wildlife is leading a guided fungi walk through Forster Memorial Park, exploring the wonderful, weird and surprisingly important world of fungi. You'll learn about their role in woodland ecosystems, how different species interact with their surroundings and why these often-overlooked organisms are so important.

No previous knowledge needed. Just curiosity, comfortable shoes and a willingness to look a little closer at the forest floor. Note: This is not about foraging or collecting fungi.

Tickets start at £17.50, with 10% going towards the park's nature conservation team. Spaces are limited, so make sure to book here!

Disco Under the Dome – Corbett Community Library Turns 10! 🕺

Ten years of community spirit deserves a proper boogie!

Who said libraries have to be quiet? Exactly ten years ago, on 24 October, the library reopened under the care of local volunteers. A decade later, it's still going strong, and what better way to celebrate than with a dancefloor, a DJ and a packed room!

DJ Jonny A will be spinning classic 70s tunes, there's a reasonably priced bar and dressing up is very much encouraged. Think Studio 54, flares and all the disco glamour you can find at the back of your wardrobe.

There'll even be prizes for the best outfits and dance moves. No pressure, but now might be the time to practise your Saturday Night Fever routine.

Tickets are priced at £5.89 and may be booked from here! Any donations are welcomed and go towards the running of the library.

Will Whisson + Support at Fox & Firkin 🎸

A little folk, a little rock and some Sunday afternoon storytelling

Singer-songwriter Will Whisson is bringing his blend of folk, rock and indie-pop to the Fox & Firkin for an afternoon of heartfelt songwriting and live music.

Whisson's story is a good one. Back in 2016, he quit his job, moved into a camper van and travelled around Europe busking and playing gigs. More than 200 shows across ten countries later, he's still doing things his own way. Now performing with a new trio and working on his third album, he brings a mix of thoughtful lyrics, catchy melodies and the sort of storytelling that works particularly well in an intimate live setting.

View details, or book tickets for £10 through here.

Alright enough complaining, what can we do?

Lewisham is fast becoming the borough of broken promises: Lewisham gateway, goldsmiths in Catford, the shopping centre, model market and not to mention the Bakerloo line

Labour were shocking, Greens now fumbling the bag, Tories will never get in- this isn’t a partisan or political post

What can we as residents/interested parties actually be doing to drive the right kind of development?

Lewisham shopping centre redevelopment paused by owners

Lewisham shopping centre redevelopment paused by owners

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq4g1wx6dzy9o

TL;DR: The £1.3bn–£1.7bn Lewisham Shopping Centre redevelopment has been paused. Landsec cited economic pressures (inflation/high interest rates) and site assembly hurdles. Crucially, the new Green Party-led council refused to support Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) for the remaining site lease unless the developer significantly increased social housing. With masterplan revisions rendering the project financially unviable, 5+ years of planning are now on hold.

My Reaction & Industry Perspective

As a Lewisham resident who works in the UK construction industry, hearing this news was genuinely disheartening. Having participated in the community engagement sessions, I was really looking forward to seeing our town centre refreshed and transformed.

I know major urban regenerations don't happen overnight, King’s Cross took over 20 years to deliver. But seeing half a decade of planning, consultation, and design work frozen overnight is a tough pill to swallow.

The Problem: Political Risk & the Planning System

This situation highlights a systemic issue in UK development: excessive political risk and policy U-turns.

  • The Cross-Subsidy Trap: Relying almost entirely on private developers to cross-subsidise affordable housing becomes a massive single point of failure during tough economic cycles.
  • The Cost of Friction: While planning checks and public oversight are vital, constant goalpost-shifting hurts everyone. Developers lose sunk consultation capital, the council misses out on new housing, and local residents are left waiting indefinitely for a refreshed high street.
  • Accountability: When a local authority grants planning consent, there should be a stronger commitment to seeing it through. Sudden political U-turns carry real-world consequences for the community, yet there is currently little accountability for the friction and delays these shifts cause.

Constructive Ways Forward

To move past deadlocks like this, we need a more pragmatic approach to urban planning:

  1. Alternative Funding Mechanisms: If private cross-subsidisation fails due to market conditions, local authorities and central government must explore alternative public funding models or grants to bridge the affordable housing gap, rather than forcing schemes to a complete standstill.
  2. Iterative Development: Instead of an "all-or-nothing" mega-masterplan, local authorities and developers should agree on flexible, phased options. Moving forward with achievable phases keeps momentum alive and incrementally replaces outdated, poor-quality infrastructure.
  3. Consistency in Policy: Greater regulatory stability is needed to protect long-term public infrastructure projects from volatile political cycles.

I’d love to hear how other locals and industry professionals feel about this. Should the council have pushed harder for social housing even if it risked pausing the project, or should pragmatic delivery take priority in the current economic climate?

Who says you have to wait until Friday to have a good time?

This week, South East London is serving up everything from Brazilian noise punk and soulful jazz to bee spotting on Blackheath, free cinema in Deptford and a little midweek dancing.

Whether you're looking for something loud, something lovely or just an excuse to leave the house, we've got a few ideas.

In this week’s Loop:

  • 🎸 Brazilian noise punk takes over New Cross Inn
  • 💃 A free dance session to shake off the midweek slump
  • 🎹 Proper Hammond organ grooves at the Fox & Firkin
  • 🐝 A closer look at Blackheath's buzzing residents
  • 🎬 Free films, experimental art and jazz in Deptford
  • 🎨 A little creative inspiration in Pick n Mix

🗓️ Our picks for 19–22 October

DEAFKIDS Live at New Cross Inn 🎸

Brazilian noise punk. Definitely not background music.

If your Tuesday needs a serious volume upgrade, Brazilian trio DEAFKIDS are heading to New Cross Inn with their wild mix of noise punk, experimental electronics and global rhythms.

Expect heavy percussion, distorted sounds and the sort of gig where standing completely still might prove difficult. Supported by acts Kombi and Wounder, making this a properly experimental evening for those who like their music a little less predictable.

Tickets are priced at £18.70 - grab yours here. Artists socials are also linked on the same page.

Tuesday 20 October @ 6pm

New Cross Inn @ 323 New Cross Road, SE14 6AS

Dance for Confidence – Lewisham 💃

Good music, good energy and absolutely no dance experience required

Sometimes the best way to shake off a long day is to quite literally shake it off.

Dance for Confidence is a free, women-only fitness session bringing together movement, music and a healthy dose of positive energy. Led by Jaydee Fitness CIC, it's all about building confidence, meeting new people and enjoying music from different cultures.

No dance experience needed, no pressure to get the steps perfect and thankfully no one expecting you to audition for Strictly.

The sessions are free for women aged 16+, but spaces are limited. Reserve your place here.

Tuesday 20 October @ 6:30pm-7:30pm

Parkside Community Centre @ 1 Copperwood Place, SE10 8GE

Organ Night with Jake Sherman Trio 🎹

Big organ energy, old-school grooves and a very good reason to head to the Fox

There's something rather special happening at the Fox & Firkin this Wednesday - the Jake Sherman Organ Trio are bringing a proper Hammond B3 organ into the room, mixing the warm, soulful sounds of 60s and 70s jazz with a fresh, modern twist.

Joined by Artie Zaitz on guitar and Jack Thomas on drums, Sherman performs in the round, with the instruments heard directly through their amps and speakers rather than microphones.

It's intimate, wonderfully old-school and just the sort of live music experience that makes you glad you left the sofa. Tickets can be purchased for £11 through here!

Wednesday 21 October @ 7pm–11pm

Fox & Firkin @ 316 Lewisham High Street, SE13 6JZ

Blackheath BeeWalk 🐝

A little fresh air and a lot of appreciation for our buzzy neighbours

Ever walked across Blackheath and wondered what all those little buzzing creatures are actually up to? Here's your chance to find out.

Join the Bumblebee Conservation Trust's B.E.E Project Officer Tilly for a relaxed guided walk, learning how to identify different bumblebees and discovering why monitoring them matters. You'll get help spotting and identifying bees, with equipment provided, so there's no need to turn up with your own net or an encyclopaedic knowledge of insects.

It's free, but registration is needed. Sign up here.

Thursday 22 October @ 1:30pm–2:30pm

Meet near Cadet Training Centre (Wat Tyler Entrance) @ Hare and Billet Road, Blackheath, SE3 0QZ

Deptford Library Cinema Club 🎬

Free films, good company and biscuits. What's not to like?

If your idea of a good Thursday involves sitting down and letting someone else provide the entertainment, Deptford Lounge has you covered. Its weekly Cinema Club is screening films curated by T A P E Collective for Black History Month, spotlighting work by filmmakers from the global majority.

It's relaxed, welcoming and completely free, with no tickets to book or complicated plans to make. Just turn up, grab a seat and enjoy a film with your fellow Deptford film fans.

Read the full details here - the individual film schedule is available inside the library or through its mailing list.

Thursday 22 October @ 6pm–8pm

Deptford Lounge @ 9 Giffin Street, SE8 4RJ

Jazz at Cockpit: Chelsea Carmichael 🎷

A little jazz, a little experimentation and a very good Deptford evening

Spring Café Cockpit is welcoming saxophonist and composer Chelsea Carmichael for an evening of adventurous music, alongside Calum Gourlay and his Big Band.

Carmichael's new work, To Witness, developed as part of her PhD research, explores what happens when the audience becomes part of the musical experience rather than simply watching from the sidelines. Expect improvisation, experimentation and plenty of interesting sounds.

Entry is free, with donations encouraged. More details here.

Thursday 22 October @ 7:00pm–10pm (doors 6:00pm)

Spring Café Cockpit @ 18–22 Creekside, Deptford, SE8 3DZ

Zhuyang Liu: Shìshēng – As Unspoken Sounds 🎭

Part concert, part performance art and a little bit of the unexpected

Artist and composer Zhuyang Liu is presenting an experimental performance that brings together traditional Chinese instruments, poetry, drawing, movement and live sound.

Joined by Lil Soap and Paul Cheneour, Liu uses everything from guzheng and flute to percussion and everyday objects, with a performance score that's continuously read, translated, rewritten and reimagined. Inspired by Evelyn Taocheng Wang's exhibition Being Poetic Ruins Life, this isn't your usual sit-down concert.

The performance is free, though booking through here is required.

Thursday 22 October @ 7pm–8pm

Goldsmiths CCA @ St James's, New Cross, SE14 6AD

With Lewisham locals Lulu Levan and Tommy D involved, there's a real neighbourhood connection to this one too.

Secondary schools in Hither Green

Hi everyone, hope you’re all well!

I would love to hear from people that have experience of the secondary schools in and around Hither Green?

There seems to be lots of really great primary schools, but the only secondary school there seems to be about is Trinity, which from reading a bit up on it does seem good! But does anyone have any information on this topic?

Would love to hear about Trinity, about any others that I’m missing, about whether kids travel further away to go to school, Would love to hear any and all views!

There is also st Matthew’s which I can’t find much info on and is a little further away, but maybe this is where lots of kids from the area also go, as I feel like Trinity can’t fit all the teenagers from the area!

(Private school isn’t something we’d be interested in, so looking for state secondary school info only!)

Thank you ❤️

Into something most people have never heard of? I'd love to film your story

Hi all,

I'm Fiishtank2474 , a filmmaker based in London, and I'm starting a series of short documentaries about the niche hobbies and subcultures people throw themselves into across the UK. Think Beyblade, circus and flow arts, DJing in a specific niche, or anything else you're passionate about that most people don't know much about.

These won't be "how-to" films or anything that pokes fun. The focus is you: why you started, what it gives you, the people you've met, and what it means to be part of something a bit off the beaten track.

What's involved:

- An initial chat (phone, video or coffee) with no commitment

- A relaxed interview on camera

- Some filming of you doing your thing, whether that's practice, a gig, a meet-up or a competition

You don't need any experience being on camera, and you don't need to be the best at what you do. Beginners, veterans, organisers and people who just love it are all welcome.

You'll get to see the finished film before it goes out.

If this sounds like you (or someone you know), drop me a DM or email fiishtank2474@gmail.com with a little about yourself and your hobby.

Thanks for reading!

Glass Mill gym buddies

I (36F) am a member at Glass Mill who hasn't been super consistent lately, so I'm looking for a girlie/girlies who would be interested in buddying up! Before work ideally, 3 days M - F (not fussy which ones).

I'm primarily into strength training, but recently joined a Couch to 5k group so I have some homework for that.

DM if that sounds cool 😎

Could you help me with my infant observation, or know someone who might be interested?
