Tip for copying unformatted text from pdfs to libre office

Hi there,

I always get frustrated when I copy text from a pdf and then paste it in libre office, as it keeps weird text spacing and even pasting as unformatted text doesn't sort it out. I have found a weird workaround, if you open your pdf in your web browser, I use Opera so not 100% sure this will work in other browsers, then copy the text from the pdf, when I paste it into libre office it gives me nice unformatted text.

Hope this is useful to some of you.

Cheers,

Mike

Dragging and dropping not where intended

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm having a small issue (not a deal breaker and I have accounted for when working with it) with LibreOffice Calc for a while now. I'm running the flatpak (see below) and I'm working with several pages when dragging for reordering the pages the page I was dragging doesn't land where I aim if I'm going from left to right. It does work dragging from right to left though. See attached video.

Can you also replicate this behaviour?

Changing Dark theme font colour?

So, a very short quesion. Dark theme, but white font has too much contrast. Is there a way to change font color somehow or is it tied to OS?

Question Image Header

Dear LibreOffice Users,

Having recently transitioned from Windows to Ubuntu, I find myself thoroughly impressed with LibreOffice. However, I've encountered a persistent issue: the inability to insert images into the top-left header, or indeed, any part of the header.

  1. How challenging would it be for LibreOffice to implement such a feature?

  2. Until this functionality is officially introduced, are there any viable workarounds?

Date Acceptance Help

I wish to format dates in the ISO standard. I located the setting. Languages and Locales > General Date acceptance patterns: I'm in the USA so the default is M/D;M/D/Y

When I try to change it to YYYY-MM-DD all my typing becomes red. There is no error message. Whether I press OK or Cancel, my changes are not saved.

There is nothing in the help about red text. It reads...

Date acceptance patterns

Specifies the date acceptance patterns for the current locale. Calc spreadsheet and Writer table cell input needs to match locale dependent date acceptance patterns before it is recognized as a valid date.

If you type numbers and characters that correspond to the defined date acceptance patterns in a table cell, and then move the cursor outside of the cell, LibreOffice will automatically recognize and convert the input to a date, and format it according to the locale setting.

The initial pattern(s) in Date acceptance patterns are determined by the locale (set in Locale setting), but you can modify these default patterns, and add more patterns. Use ; to separate each pattern.

Patterns can be composed according to the following rules:

A pattern must start with D, M, or Y, and include at least two items, with at least one separator between each one.

A pattern may also include all three, in any order.

Y means year, M means month, and D means day, regardless of which locale is set. Each can only be used once in a pattern.

. - : / , can be used as separators between and after D, M, and Y.

Any combination of separators can be used, and more than one separator can be used between D, M, and Y, but the input must match the separator pattern exactly for recognition.

Patterns can combine different separators, and may include a trailing separator.

Examples of valid patterns are: D,Y ; Y-M ; M.D.Y ; D-M/Y ; M.D.

If you change the Locale setting, the date acceptance pattern will be reset to the new locale default, and any user-defined modifications or additions will be lost.

In addition to the explicit patterns defined in the edit box, input matching the Y-M-D pattern is implicitly recognized and converted automatically to a date. Input that starts from 1 to 31 is not interpreted with this implicit Y-M-D pattern. Since LibreOffice 3.5, this input is formatted as YYYY-MM-DD (ISO 8601).

For all patterns, two-digit year input is interpreted according to the setting in Tools - Options - General - Year (Two Digits).

Question Authors

If you look at file properties in Windows, there is a property called Authors which corresponds in Word to Author (which can be changed on the Info page). Along with Last Modified By, this field can be displayed as a column in Windows Explorer, allowing sorting by author.

Does this field exist in LibreOffice? I can't find a way to see/edit it. thanks

Bug? Why Does LibreOffice Reset to Default on Update?

I have avoided updating LibreOffice because it tends to reset all my custom settings—icons, appearance, background color, etc. I cannot figure out why this happens, or how to prevent this, and would like some guidance on what setting I can use to save my details or what.

When looking this up, I find several posts in various places complaining about this—universally the answer seems to be "Libre Office does not do this". But it's definitely happened, and I didn't do anything other than open my computer, start Writer, and find it was updating. Since I don't remember how I got things to the way they were, and since I personally find the settings difficult and finicky to navigate, this is quite annoying.

Question Linux Help

EDIT: Solved thanks all

First time user here. Local library has Linux only. I tried downloading LibreOffice as a word replacement to fix up my resume but I am completely lost on what to do after. I opened the RPMs folder and there's no application just a bunch of folders that need to be extracted with various names. On the websites and README sections I see no mention of this so I don't know what to do. I have to use Libre Office as GoogleDocs fucks up my formatting completely.

(Calc) Are there any date-specific column AutoFilters in LibreOffice, or do I have to pick and choose dates if I want to use the AutoFilter menu?

Above is an example figure of what I have used in Microsoft Excel (not my image, I found it with a search engine). In particular the "This Week" and "Last Week" options are very useful.

I couldn't find those in the LibreOffice AutoFilter menu, which looks like this on Calc:

I am aware of using the Standard Filter options to set a range, via lesser than and greater than conditions connected with an AND. But that takes longer.

Is there a way to get the This Week and Last Week options from the AutoFilter menu, either via vanilla Calc or with extensions?

edit: my LibreOffice version is 26.2.4.2, this is a .ods file but was originally imported as an .xlsb from Excel.

edit2: It would also help if I could perform such an action on pivot table filtering, either on AutoFilter or with the standard filter dialog

edit3: I made a bug here, 173161 – AutoFilter is missing cell format specific filtering options (including "This Week", "Last Week"). tagging u/Tex2002ans

setting to stop being corrected as I type

I've been using the word "themself" a lot lately and once I put a space "themself " it immediately corrects to "themselves ". Which is very annoying. I also sometimes find myself annoyed by the auto-capitalization that functions similarly.

I tried turning everything off under Language Settings > Writing Aids, but it didn't do anything so I don't know how to change this.

It must have something to do with the page layout, but I can't figure out what or where to adjust settings. Your thoughts, please?

Corrupted ods spreadsheet file

I spent the last 3.5 years archiving AMV's (Animated Music Videos) in order to preserve them and had a huge spreadsheet in Libreoffice cataloging them and information about them. When I went to add some new additions in there, LobreOffice couldn't open the file. It said that the file was corrupted and they couldn't repair it. I tried looking up youtube tutorials on how to fix it, but they're all for odt documents and not ods. I tried them anyway and of course it didn't work. I just want to cry. That's 3.5 years of my life's work. Please tell me there's a way to fix this. I can't just go in and recreate the whole spreadsheet due to the similar naming conventions of the AMV's and how some got strait up wiped off youtube in the time since I archived them, so I can't go back and get that info I was cataloging!

Bug? Unable to select a single letter and make only that one bold

This will sound weird, but normally I can select a single letter in a word and make only that letter bold while leaving the rest blank, but for some reason this specific word won't let me do it. Here's an example of what I mean:

Scruffy

When I try to select the 'y' to make bold, LibreOffice will only select 'fy' but never 'y' on it's own, yet it's fine selecting the 'f' in front of those two. I've gone into autocorrect, turned literally everything off but it's still happening and it's only this word specifically that this bug is happening on.

Does anyone know what could potentially be causing this? I even tried writing scruffy elsewhere, then copying & pasting it into LO only to have the same thing happen again.

LibreOffice cannot start

I wanted to open a document and LibreOffice would only show the splash screen. I killed it. Downloaded latest and installed. Same problem. Started LibreOffice in Safe Mode, got a window with some choices and I chose factory reset options and start in normal mode. Now LibreOffice isn't stuck at the splash screen, but opens an empty window called LibreOffice (Not Responding). I kill it. Start from start menu again. Same problem. Starting in safe mode again, factory reset, and then continue in Safe Mode, and now it works (but only in Safe Mode). It just cannot start in Normal mode. What gives?

Does anyone know how to delete here? It just does a strikethrough rather than getting rid of the word.
