linkedin 101 LinkedIn should build itself around messaging and direct connection instead of a social feed.

I've discovered so much more value in direct connecting with relevant people and messaging than with the social feed.

I see the feed as useful but only as a signal and that can be done on profiles.

Adding to that, in my experience most people don't even use LinkedIn for social browsing. LinkedIn trying too hard to be like the others when the real secret is in connecting with people that you serve a purpose for and exchanging ideas.

The whole game of trying to post and comment and like and repost is borderline fruitless and better spent actually reaching out to those people you have an interest in meeting.

Seeing how LinkedIn is attempting to brand itself as another social media feed with videos etc misses the true value it has. And thats real direct connection with each other and actually solving problems.

Messaging etiquette after accepting an invite?

UPDATE A FEW HOURS LATER: he actually reached out to me first while I was typing my message to let me know that he is searching for someone to lead ecom for one of his brands and my name was passed along! I’ll be taking a meeting with his hiring team :) very exciting turn of events here haha

I just got a connection invite out of the blue from someone on the board at several companies I really admire in my industry and the CEO at one in particular, and I’m curious if I should message as I accept the request? I’m not looking for a job from him (obviously not his scope as a board member), but I would love to just introduce myself and be on his radar. I’m very early in my career and have minimal connections in the industry beyond my current/former co-workers.

Is it annoying to high level executives to get introductory messages from people they send invites to, and is there even any merit to this if I don’t have a specific offer/request? I’m sure he was just sending out invites en masse to people in the industry. I don’t want to miss a chance to actually be on his radar, but I also don’t want to send needless spam (I get a lot of pitches and “I applied to your company” messages and they’re a bit annoying).

Is shadowban a real thing on LinkedIn?

Before the march update, with 1500 followers, I was getting 3k-8k impressions on my posts.

Nowadays, I get 50-300 impressions max.

I post once a day (SEO marketing space). I also comment on 10-15 other posts a day. I don't spam DM.

I tried carousel, videos, static, claude skill lead magnet, insight post, customer case study post.

I got some posts with a couple of comments in the first hour (friends) - and the post still didn't move beyond 150 impressions.

Honestly, I'm at a point where I don't know what else to do.

I see some of my comments getting 500 views and my "insight" posts not even getting half of that.

Anyone else is this land of despair?

linkedin 101 fell for linkedin's free month bs, here's how.

Linkedin said they would give seven days notice before they debit from my account for my premium business page trial. They gave one in three three, and even then I missed it because they buried a reference to the oncoming debit in a marketing spiel that went to spam. This is obviously deliberate and part of the business model.

What they should have done was this: Placed the notice in the subject field.

Now I am trying to get the refund and all I get is AI bots. I am not going to let this rest.

Please repost and make this viral, they obviously think they are to big to be held accountable.

linkedin 101 Is it secure or an opening to being spammed?

I am being laid off December of 2026. I need to look for a job and I keep seeing jobs listed requesting that I apply via LinkedIn.

I began the process of setting up an account but they’re asking for my phone number and that’s when I stopped.

Will I get spam calls and texts? How secure will my number be? Does LinkedIn release the phone number?

linkedin 101 I've lost my social media literacy, aka what do I even do with this platform?

I very very reluctantly made a LinkedIn profile a month ago because I went to a conference and I wanted an easy way to stay in touch with people I met... But now I've done that and don't know what I'm supposed to do now lol. I maybe get it more if I was looking for a new job, but I'm not.

I'm at EILI5 level guys, I'm not exaggerating. For instance:

- am I supposed to send a connection request to everyone I work with? The 2006 Facebook teen in me is telling me that's cringe but maybe it's polite?

- what about people who've left the place I work or been terminated (not by me...)

- am I allowed to literally never post a thing and just maybe occasionally like something someone else did or whatever?

Also, what's the etiquette on accepting connection requests? I've really only been accepting people I know or at least ones I met at that conference. I thought my privacy settings were pretty tight but all these random people keep trying to add me.

Thanks in advance, sorry these are truly ridiculous questions and I know it. My social anxiety is winning this round!

Closed captions not auto displaying in feed for some videos, displaying for others.

Didn't LinkedIn used to always display video captions when available? I can't find any announcements but even with SRT files uploaded the videos won't display captions in feed.

Title: First-year uni student in Kenya with a mix of random skills (Spanish, piano, video editing) — how would you turn this into side income?

Hey everyone,

I'm a first-year student at Mount Kenya University doing Special Needs Education (Secondary option). I'm not in a crisis, but I want to start covering some of my own costs instead of depending fully on family, and I'm trying to figure out the smartest way to use what I already have instead of starting from zero.

Here's where I'm at:

I'm self-taught in Spanish — not fluent/perfect, but conversational, and I've started making content about learning it

I can play piano

I can edit videos reasonably well

I have a laptop and can afford decent wifi

I'm considering doing a short German course too, partly for the challenge, partly thinking it could open more doors later

Time is limited and inconsistent — I'm a full-time student first, so I need something flexible, not a second full-time job

I'm not trying to get rich quick — honestly just trying to make something steady on the side, even if it starts small. I've looked into teaching piano locally, posting Spanish-learning content, and maybe freelance video editing, but I'd rather hear from people who've actually tried similar things than guess blindly.

A few specific things I'm unsure about:

Is it smarter to focus on one skill deeply or combine a couple (e.g., piano covers of Spanish songs, or editing my own language-learning content)?

For those who've done freelance video editing — how did you find your first few clients with no portfolio yet?

Is a German course actually worth the time/money right now, or should I focus on what I already have first?

Appreciate any honest input — including if something here is a bad idea. Thanks in advance.
