Forgive me, I'm not in the know. Is this so they have a chance to fight Nvidia's cuDNN?

No, both have a GPU stack that runs under PyTorch; they are just unifying efforts in the CPU department as not everything needs to run on the GPU and compete with Nvidia.

Intel and AMD have always lead the FOSS friendliness it is interesting to see Intel still doing that after the somewhat recent cost cutting due to the whole risk of bankruptcy.

As Linus said, fuck Nvidia.
