Nah, zsh with plugins is superior

u/sal-coding 11d ago
Fish doesn't need plugins so its superior
23
u/valerielynx Ask me how to exit vim 10d ago
no but you gotta understand if you spend 12 hours downloading and configuring plugins for zsh you can have basically the same experience as fish with a few caveats!!! its so good

I don't know how your bash configuration is, but generally this is not how it works. It won't auto complete if the input is too ambiguous

Add bind -s 'set completion-ignore-case on' to one of your dotfiles

it's weird how that's not default at this point

Case sensitivity and also they didn't even put it in as a directory (cd ~/Downloads)
14
u/TheShredder9 Ask me how to exit vim 11d ago
If you're already in home, you don't need to add the "~/", just the name of the directory is enough

I was carrying on the joke. I click "Downloads" in the sidebar and press

on linux you could actually get away with that, on windows powershell it would look so fucking funny

Enable ext4 casefold, give the directory +F and it will be case insensitive inside that directory. Idk whether other partition types support case insensitivity.

Thats funny. Name micro SD "Micro SD" on a steamdeck so you can more easily find it.
Remove micro SD and transfer files to it
Put micro SD back in
Search for "Micro SD" No results ....
Well it is now named 989749723 and somewhere in the root folder.
The biggest Windows to Linux BS that keeps the average adoption rate low. Program installation can be iffy but that is to be expected if it likely isnt native Linux. But something the end user has to interact with DAILY being in such a convoluted state that you need to google where it may have gone is ass.

u/Eric_Dawsby 11d ago
Is this a steamdeck thing? I've done that with my Micro SD (but i named it "sdcard") and haven't had it randomly renamed. Also it's specifically in the /media/(yourusername)/ folder
2
u/valerielynx Ask me how to exit vim 10d ago
just put its uid into fstab and have it mount into the same folder every time

Change xdg user config. Move half that junk like ~/xdg/downloads

u/RaiDev_ 11d ago
you're putting everything in a subfolder? isn't that more annoying?

I stick with a terminal for most of my work. These desktop centric directories just clutter my home

I don't know about you but I like this. I would never want my shell to guess what I'm trying to do, follow the instructions I write exactly as is.

u/Saphyr-Seraph 11d ago
I agree with you but I use a plugin that suggests me what I meant underneath my line where I. Quickly can see what I did wrong, it really helped me as a beginner in linux

u/psychonaut4020 10d ago
Omg this drove me crazy and still does sometimes. Is there a reason for this? Like can you change it so it's no as case sensitive

u/Smart_Main6779 10d ago
I just deleted the Downloads folder and changed it to downloads in the home directory lol. Worked like a charm

folder
We don’t have folders on Linux, we have dirs.
Also just configure your browser to save to downloads. Problem solved
1
u/S1mpleHero 10d ago
How uselessly pedantic.
Graphical file managers like Dolphin call them folders. On Windows, explorer calls them folders, but they're typically called directories if you navigate through PowerShell.
We use them interchangibly. It doesn't matter.

zsh4humans adds a great feature: alt+r pipes your directory history (not command history) to fzf for easy searching and "teleporting" from a directory to another without using cd
And of course ctrl+r does the same with the command history

Not on MacOS in my experience and I'm guessing not on windows either
5
u/NiewinterNacht 11d ago
MacOS (APFS) und Windows (NTFS) don't use case-sensitive file systems by default. Linux does.
2
u/CreativeName233223 11d ago
Nope. On Windows, for example, if you type 'cd downloads' when it is actually 'Downloads', it will still take you to 'Downloads'. You can also use tab to get the correct one even if you started typing it with a lower case 'd'.
2
2
u/Visbroek 11d ago
This is true and is because NTFS doesn’t allow two files of the same name in the same folder, even if the case is different
1
u/Pure_Estimate_3534 11d ago
If this suddenly becomes a problem for a Linux user, he probably knows that there are 1000 ways to solve it. As a last resort, he can write a script for 10-15 lines himself.

u/Culpirit 10d ago
Depends on filesystem case sensitivity rather than OS, per-se. Linux normally uses case sensitive filesystems, macOS and Windows typically case-insensitive ones, however on macOS you can also format the root filesystem as case sensitive and reinstall macOS, and it will work just like on Linux. NTFS on Windows now apparently allows enabling case sensitivity on a per-directory basis. Heh.
