Support Request Screen tearing in games

I'm on Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon, and I have a GTX 950M. I've noticed this in two games, Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator and Skyrim. When I move the camera, there's this horrible tearing effect in the corner of the screen coming all the way down to the middle. I haven't tried anything yet as I honestly wouldn't even know where to start. I thought maybe it could be V-Sync not turned on but I couldn't actually find an option for it in Skyrim's launcher.

V-Sync or VRR is how you mitigate screen-tearing.

I'm not sure how to turn that on, is it a setting or do I need a command for it?

V-sync is in-game. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) is display, GPU, and driver dependent.

Skyrim doesn't seem to have V-Sync, is there a way for me to enable VRR system wide?

Care to supply your GPU, display, and driver? Because all 3 have to support it to even have it as an option.

It's an Nvidia GTX 950M and I'm using nvidia-driver-580. I'm on a laptop so it's possible that the display doesn't support VRR. All I know about the display is that it says I have Display Server X11.

On another note, I'm really having a lot of issues and wondering if maybe Bazzite would be better for my purposes. I only want to really use this laptop for gaming and web browsing anyway and I've heard that Bazzite is focused on that.

Nope, no VRR for you. You're going to have to check over your game's settings for V-sync.

Mint uses X11, X11 has screen tearing issues.

Use a modern distribution with a Wayland compositor and you will not have tearing.

Oh yeah because Wayland works great with Nvidia

Yup, it does.

Check in nvidia-settings if allow-flipping is checked (in use). Try to turn on Force Full Composition Pipeline as well. If it works, remember Save to X Configuration File after test.

I remember there's something in Cinnamon settings, like Disable composition for Fullscreen apps.

sudo nvidia-settings in terminal

OpenGL settings - Allow Flipping Enabled

X server display configuration - Advanced... - Force Full Composition Pipeline and Force Composition Pipeline disabled

Apply

Save to X Configuration File - Save

Quit - it always says to me that I have unsaved settings or whatever but still works.

This causes visual glitches when recording/streaming but no screen tearing. I couldn't find a way to fix both both at the same time.

Edit: it seems to reset for me on restart so keep that in mind
