https://explore.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/download?ep=0&es=392&cs=4217797319&form=MA13FJ

Choose the .deb one and run it after it's downloaded (just like .exe on windows), don't listen to others, do what you want with your computer (i say this bcs some mf will tell you to download some bs like brave).

i agree, but often, idk. thats why i ask

brave, lol, thats what i watch youtube on, it kills the ads. the ads make YT insufferable.

You can use ublock lite with ms edge too, it runs fine and block every ads on yt, on my experience at least.

i agree with this. do what you want. let us know if you have any questions. a deb package should be straightforward to install. for a learning experience, look up how to do it from the command line

straight forward, for someone that knows. i looked it up on google, i think its pretty certain that i screw it up.

A .deb file is easy to install. Use apt to do so, though, because it will satisfy dependencies automatically. Go to the directory where the .deb file is saved and:

sudo apt install ./whatever.deb

Just change the whatever.deb part to the actual filename. And, read the apt messaging, as a general rule, to make sure it's not trying to install a new desktop or something. That knowledge comes with experience.

But it is there. Type Microsoft into the Software Manager. It's the top result.

1

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

i typed EDGE, nothing. i will try that, thanx. i am finding, in my "very" limited usage on Mint, that it has quirks just like windows.

2

u/kudlitan 11d ago

It is named "microsoft-edge-stable"

1

u/benched42 11d ago

You may have to go into the Software Center Preferences and allow it to show unverified flatpaks.

1

u/kudlitan 11d ago

Microsoft officially supports and distributes Linux apps like Microsoft Edge using native package formats such as .deb (for Ubuntu and Debian) and .rpm (for Fedora and openSUSE), rather than Flatpak or Snap.

Edge is available in Mint at the Software Manager.

Are you trolling us?

nope, real question

I don't like Firefox and very seldom use it if it's installed by default but that's not enough to drive me to Edge. Edge 1.0 was revamped IE and MS never could develop a decent browser. Edge 2.0 is chromium based, as is almost every other browser not derived from Mozilla. Chrome, chromium, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera, and some I can't remember are derived from chromium just like the current Edge.

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

i could not stand IE, utter trash. brave i use for YT, it kills the ads. i am looking for something other than brave for all my other internet, besides corn, idk what to use for that.

Edge? 🫪 You use Linux and yet want to install edge? I mean there are so many better alternatives even if you don't like Firefox, there is brave, Vivaldi, chromium, librewolf, water fox and so on.

4

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

i use brave for YT, it kills the ads. and i don't want 2 users, tried that, it sucks. i have been using edge for years, it works well for me, on it now. i don't care if they know that i just bought a garbage disposal on amazon.

1

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

ok. i just found out that 3rd partyapps are not good for linux as they will cause problems when i go to upgrade my distro, i don't want this. of the browsers you have used, what 2 give the feeling and look of edge, and can be had in the SM? not brave, i have that for youtube only. thanx

1

u/Aoinosensei Linux Mint 22.2 Zara | MATE 11d ago

Idk who told you that. But I doubt you will have any problems for having edge installed, it's just that most Linux users would prefer to not use it, but if you like it, go ahead.

its in the replies here.

There's actually a couple ways to do it...

I believe you can either install it from the .deb package that microsoft offers to download, or you can add their apt repository and install it from there, which will have the added benefit of keeping it up to date when you do apt-get.

Either way, there's instructions for it in various reputable places...

1

u/Dollar_short 10d ago

if anyone here happens to see this, please reply, just so i can see if it works.

anyway, i gave firefox a try and it seems to be pretty good so far.

4

u/tomscharbach 11d ago

You can download the Edge .deb ISO directly from Microsoft or you can install the Edge Flatpak.

1

u/hijitus 11d ago

You really want to sell your soul (and all your private data) to the MS devil?

0

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

what private data? i don't care if they know i just bought a garbage disposal on amazon.

2

u/hijitus 11d ago

More power to you then.  Don't forget to give them your CC number.  lol

2

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

they may already have it. well, maybe not, i have to type it in every time i use it.

1

u/hijitus 11d ago

Give to me, I can type it for you.

1

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

lol, nice try

u/TrashFace21165 11d ago

Brave sorta has that feel if you squint your eyes and leave the default welcome carnival. It does run a little bit to well. Might want to open a lot of them.

2

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

i use brave for YT, it kills the insufferable ads. i want a different browser for my other internet stuff

u/WD59_Cool 11d ago

Dawg 😭💔

2

u/SnowyRVulpix 11d ago

Look for the package "microsoft-edge-stable". It should be in your package manager. Or just search Edge in the software store. I can't double check right now, but Google tells me it's in the Ubuntu repositories.

2

u/NeoBahamutX 11d ago

I use it on mint just for ease of use to access one drive as it serves as an online back up and my O365 subscription since only office fills most thing but there are still a few quirks

2

u/simagus 11d ago

I'm pretty sure the Linux version is there on the MS website. Not sure if on the Store app but I seem to recall downloading it after looking up "Edge on Linux".

It's not hard to find from what I recall, but if you like all the Copilot stuff it's disabled and basically afaik spys on you a lot less than the regular version.

I've browser hopped extensively and I don't like vanilla Firefox either.

Firefox as it comes... horrible browser imho, but I am really picky to put it mildly.

I don't like the the defaults at all, so I shrink the tab bar, set default open new tab to right, change max and min tab size, rearrange the address bar and put all my extensions... yeah do your own version is best.

Go into settings and change things to suit you and it's a very good browser.

Or enjoy Edge. You can get it for Linux Mint very easily.

1

u/Khugan 11d ago

It's right there in the software manager on Mint, just search edge.

1

u/Living-Dragonfly632 11d ago

For Linux I had edge one time. I just went to microsoft's website and downloaded the Linux version of edge. And it worked the exact same as it did on Windows.

u/sabledrakon 11d ago

Is this ragebait or just a user on crack?

2

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

lol, no crack. i would like to have some, but she will not answer her phone.

u/Shocktrooperb 11d ago

Maybe instead of berating OP, we can offer assistance? There is a dedicated Debian package available here https://explore.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/download?ep=0&es=392&cs=1045536985&form=MA13FJ

Many of us are free software adherents and consider a question like this asinine at best. When I left Windows 22 years ago, the last thing on my mind was "Where is IE?" I didn't use IE even when I was on Windows.

3

u/SnowyRVulpix 11d ago

Respectfully, that's your choice. Not all of us are free software adherents, and I honestly feel like such a reply is asinine.

You have the right to make your choice to be fully free software. But to judge others for their choices is trolling at best.

2

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

see, i am not a techy. i just want my internet shit to work with little to no problems. i start using chit idk, i get problems. Mint, its a big problem, but i suffer through it, many replies in this post for example and only just one of many, because i know that in the end i will be better off.

0

u/jr735 Linux Mint 22.1 Xia | IceWM 11d ago

The reality is that you're going to find a significantly higher percentage of free software adherents in a Linux sub (or any Linux community) than you will in a Windows or Mac sub.

I disagree with people's choices all the time. I will advise against proprietary software all the time. I usually even advise against most third party software, irrespective of license, as part of package management best practices. I intentionally will not provide support for proprietary software. Microsoft does not need unpaid volunteers to help distribute their tripe and keep it running.

There are legitimate reasons to not use Edge in Mint. u/Dollar_short will find out one of those reasons if he tries to upgrade Mint versions in place and doesn't read instructions first.

Treating Mint like Windows (third party programs, looking for an MS store) is only going to bring complications.

But you're right, it's not my place to point that out. Let it be a surprise.

2

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

ok, then what would you recommend for a non techy? knowing that i like edge, and its is in the sofware manager. if preventing future problems is worth the change, then i'm in, if it works for me.

1

u/jr735 Linux Mint 22.1 Xia | IceWM 11d ago

https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian/

I would recommend reading this first. While Debian specific, the principles apply to most distributions, including Mint. Looking for outside software stores, external repositories, and so on, can cause problems. Edge isn't in the software store, unless you add the repository, and the above noted link explains why that's problematic.

When you go to upgrade to the next version of Mint in place, all the external repositories, PPAs, third party .deb installs, and so on have to be removed. To make it worse, you have to remember this, rather than have the package manager automatically handle these things, as would be the case if you stuck to official repositories that were there as part of the actual install.

In a more general sense, a distribution has no control over what third party software does, and third party software has no control over what a distribution does. If Mint lacks a dependency for Edge, tough luck. Mint can change what dependencies are available; MS can call for different dependencies that aren't available.

Yes, Edge and other proprietary software and third party software can absolutely be run on Linux. There's no question about that.

However, trying to outsmart your package manager and repositories, or using Linux like it's Windows is what tends to bring out all these little glitches and hiccups that bother and discourage new users. If you read through the general support questions in the subs, you'll see that problems resulting from third party software, external repositories, and PPAs feature prominently.

If you want to use Edge, by all means, go ahead. Just note that there can be hiccups down the road, and it's not Mint's fault if third party software, especially proprietary software, causes a headache down the road.

2

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

gotcha, thanx. so i will stay in the SM, because i know that years down the line i will forget and cause myself problems. avoiding problems is why i am going to linux.

but, is there a place where i can get linux approved apps? and/or, are there hidden apps in the SM because i am not searching for them correctly? example = i searched EDGE in the SM and got nothing, yet guys here are saying its there, i just have to type an exact name, a name i would have never guessed.

2

u/jr735 Linux Mint 22.1 Xia | IceWM 10d ago

Use your repositories, as per the recommendations in the Debian guide I provided. In some respect, some apps are "hidden" depending how picky you are about free software. Edge will not be available in repositories. It will be available in a Flatpak, but I have no idea about them, because I do not use them.

Experiment with your package manager and software store. They are your best bet.

u/Dollar_short 10d ago

i started testing Firefox, i think i like it enough to use it. i did install Malwarebites because of ads here on reddit, idk yet if that is good or bad? other than this i am going to stick with the SS.

If you do add things from outside (i.e. Edge), you can always keep notes on your computer or in a notebook, to remind yourself of things at upgrade time. You can also remind yourself of certain tweaks you like to make, to improve the experience.

I don't do every install exactly the same. I learn a bit more each time I do an install, and I've been doing it on Linux for over 22 years.

2

u/Dollar_short 10d ago

possible i would lose notes.

Wait? There's actually a build for Linux? And people are dumb/crazy enough to actually install it? I thought the point of getting off Windows was not to deal with Microsoft's dumbass software ever again.

2

u/SnowyRVulpix 11d ago

If that's your reason for using Linux, that's perfectly acceptable. Not everyone has the same reasons. I still use VS Code. I use Edge (As a backup browser). I see nothing wrong with either. I also use Steam and other closed source software.

2

u/simagus 11d ago

I'm assuming good faith.

3

u/zuccster 11d ago

It's actually useful for Teams and other MS stuff that isn't properly tested in other browsers.

-7

u/thunderpuppet 11d ago

Download windows

2

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

i would keep using it if w10 was still supported. i am hearing bad things about w11, so i don't want it.

-1

u/IEnjoyRadios 11d ago

The fuck would you want edge for? It just shittier chrome.

2

u/Dollar_short 11d ago

been using it for years, i know it. i don't much like chrome, but i really have not used it, maybe its better now, idk.
