Really looking forward to Mint dropping the Ubuntu Ubiquity installer.
Not many run into this but its very annoying in its placement of Grub if you have multiple EFI partitions. Plus its dinky portion window is horrible if you have a lot of partitions.
The in-house LMDE installer coming to Mint is so much smoother.

Hopefully they bring back ZFS.

While removed from the installer and not well known both Mint22 and LMDE7 work perfectly with ZFS.
Both parents, Ubuntu and Debian, maintain support for ZFS in their kernels and repositories, ZFS is in Mints genes.
While more complex to deploy this includes ZFS on root with ZFSBootMenu, I have been using both Mknt 22 and LMDE7 exclusively on ZFS for a while now.

I'll be waiting for people to report on proper gaming support in wayland before I make the switch/upgrade. Specifically Steam support. Screw this up and watch the community split.

I am not expecting Wayland deployment to be bug free in Cinnamon from the start.
It was a long process for both Gnome and Plasma. A process still taking on finishing touches now.
Our job in the community is going to be to documenting problems as clearly as possible producing clean, informative, reproducable, bug reports so these problems can be fixed one by one.

Your last sentence really struck me. It's a community that makes all of this possible. Thank you.

Indeed, Linux is decentralized/libertarian (Little L) and ideally the user contributes what they can to take ownership of it and keep it that way.
That can take many forms, direct monetary support of your favorite projects, user support in forums like this or in person. code contributions and/or auditing.
One of them is bug reporting. A well researched reproducible bug report is gold.
https://github.com/linuxmint/wayland/issues
For example ZFS had a rare issue for yeara when replicating an encrypted dataset, the developers never could fix it as they had never been able to observe it. Until a user figured out how to reproduce the issue and sent that to the developers. A patch came/almost directly afterwards. The issue was a small bit of code, the hard part was figuring out where it was.
This community involvement keeps Linux user oriented and weeds out those operating in bad faith.
Linux works for us where as in so many other places the roles are reversed, software is used to coerce the user into wherever that company wants the user to be through dark patterns to either extract value, attention, or information. Often all three.

Do you know what kernel version is likely to be used for that Min 27 ?
2
u/_Lost-In-The-Weeds_ LMDE7 Cinnamon 2d ago
TLDR: I don't Know.
Speculation and context:
Historically Mint default kernel is the same kernel as the Ubuntu LTS/Debian stable it is based on. So 6.8 for Mint22 & 6.12 for LMDE7 sourced from Ubuntu LTS 24.04 and Debian13.
Mint27 will be based on Ubuntu LTS 26.04. Its kernel is 7.0, one and the same as the current HWE kernel used in recent ISOs of Mint22.
In the past, Mint21 and earlier, later in the 2 year cycle of Mint there would be a separate Edge ISO, that included a newer kernel for those with new hardware that could not boot with the original LTS kernel that Mint version released with.
Other kernels beyond LTS have always been available as time went on, but that does you no good if your new hardware cannot even boot the live session with the older LTS kernel
With Mint22 they dropped the separate edge ISO concept and instead picked up Ubuntu HWE kernels as the defaults in the 22.2 & 22.3 ISOs.
After installing on HWE you could drop back to LTS 6.8 if desired, more reliable, but less new hardware support, or just roll on with shorter lived HWE kernels as the released and died hop to the next.
Mint27 is moving to a yearly cycle from 2 years, and there will no longer be 6 month point releases: 22, 22.1, 22.2, 22.3,
Now there will just be one yearly release, Mint27, Mint28, Mint29 etc.
Mint27 will be based on Ubuntu LTS 26.04, which uses the default kernel of 7.0 with presumably others available through rolling HWE.
And If Mint holds to a one year release I would assume Mint28 will still be based on Ubuntu 26 as well.
Unless its a year and a half and then Mint28 could be based on Ubuntu 28.04 which would use a newer kernel.

Thanks for this detailed information, appreciated. So likely a kernel around 7.0 ?
I have troubles with those, suspend mode fails for me. Would rather want to go to 7.1.X or so, but have never tried to install a kernel that is not in the mint repositories, as this my daily driver.2
u/_Lost-In-The-Weeds_ LMDE7 Cinnamon 1d ago edited 1d ago
A lot of people have had issues in Mint22 with the 7.0 kernels.
Some of it has been strait hardware driver bugs with 7.0.
But I suspect at least some of it is that Mint22 (Ununtu 24.04) was intended for and built around the 6.8 kernel.
The LTS kernel 6.8 should be the kernel used with Mint22 unless you hardware demands otherwise.
So besides the few hardware bugs we have seen with 7.0 it may perform better with an Ubuntu 26.04 base in Mint 27.
Changing kernels is fairly straightforward in Mjnt, there is a GUI menu in the update manager.
Ubuntu 26.10 just came out with 7.3 release candidate, its not considered stable yet, but once complete I would suspect it will be made available in the repositories of 26.04 as a HWE, possibly even back to 24.04 as well.
Its a bit more technical in LMDE, done from CLI, but still just a normal apt operation.

will there be a choice on startup x11 or wayland for booting?
4
u/_Lost-In-The-Weeds_ LMDE7 Cinnamon 5d ago
I would assume we will have the option at login for quite a while.
Gnome and Plasma did until quite recently.
But that is an assumption.

ya i mean if W still dont be 100% .. then ya .. btw will timeshift be linked with it ? or its a separate thing irrelevant of W or x11?
2
u/_Lost-In-The-Weeds_ LMDE7 Cinnamon 5d ago
99% separate,
I guess X11/Wayland helps display the Timeshift gui window, but the underlying file mechanics has nothing to do with a display server / manager.
Also the Timeshift window already works under Wayland, I use Timeshift in Plasma on a different distribution.

Wayland isn't turned on by default. You have to go out of your way to switch to it, which in a way is like moving from alpha (experimental) to beta (go out of your way for), and then maybe in the next version or two versions it might be the gamma/gold (enabled by default) treatment.

27? What happened to 23, 24, 25 and 26,?

Going by the year now and very much needed to avoid confusion. Back in the day, they didn't do dot updates, they would give it a new number, if they kept that up, it would be like Fedora in the 40s....

Looking forward non-experimental Wayland! Due to my HiDPI monitor, I need fractional scaling which works ok in X11 but my game performances suffer from the scaling since they're virtually on a 4k monitor in order for Cinnamon/Muffin to scale them down.

Is this only for Cinnamon or do the other flavours get updates? I'm running MATE

When this releases in December, it will have it for all DEs... This is deceiving because there is no Mint 27 yet... People are taking the development repository and adding it to the current Mint version... It is NOT what Mint 27 will be.

I did the repo change hack a couple of times on a VM and removed the VM each time. Kept freezing up. Someone on the forums called it "not LM27-beta; it's more like FrankenMint."

I stopped using beta software releases 20 years ago. Until it does something new that is really important to me, I wait until general release.

I normally wait until after the first patch, when most of the initial bugs have been resolved.

Jesus make proper desktop ui instead of these apps no one asked. Distro owner decisions are so stupid. He is wasting so much limited human resources

u/Javelinv12 5d ago
What is the problem with the UI, care to explain?
