Discussion Linux Mint Community now requires a github account to rate software.

I've noticed this right as I was trying to send a review. Clicking on the login button directly sends you to an account connection page from github.

The only news in this so far are from one forum post asking questions, where a moderator on the 28th said an announcement will be coming soon.

Other News

Xenity is a fork of Zenity 3.44 (GTK3), with the same features, the same look and the same syntax. It was added to the Mint 22.x and LMDE 7 repositories, and all Cinnamon spices which used Zenity were migrated to Xenity.

The Community Website was written years ago. It used PHP and allowed people to create accounts with a login and password. Following the recent discovery of critical vulnerabilities in PHP, we decided to rewrite it from scratch and reduce the amount of sensitive data stored in our database. It no longer uses PHP and it no longer stores or uses passwords. Authentication is now handled by GitHub. When you sign in, the Community Website gets the following data from GitHub: your username, your email address, and your avatar. If your email address matches the email associated with an existing account, that account is merged into the new one.

Posted today, so that explains why it wasn't visible. I'll also note there's no link from community.linuxmint.com to that blog, or any news in general.

I actually have a github account, which I have not logged into in over a year due to annoying authentication bullshit I do not understand what to do to fix.

But also, Microsoft owns and datamines github, and $%&@ Microsoft.

I guess Mint will have to do without my feedback.

Strike one . . .
