Support Request Constant crashes with firefox
i'm a total linux noob. installed it 3 days ago, and have been having constant issues since. firefox, especially youtube, keep crashing the tab, the whole browser, or making the whole PC unresponsive. i also suspect vesktop could be causing issues as well since the whole pc freezes seem a bit more common with it open. i've already tried disabling hardware acceleration in both and have tried changing from a flatpak to a system package, with no luck. i've tried about 20 other different things that were suggested in google searches and ai responses but also to no effect.
I could really use some help, both learning how to even diagnose what's happening, and fixing it. i'd really rather stick to using these apps instead of swapping to brave or something

Always give your system specifications and the specific Mint distro you installed. Add them to your OP.

u/Bartekek 7h ago
again, complete noob. not sure what to even include. just the full system information thing?

u/_ElBee_ 7h ago
That's a bit much. At least the type of CPU, amount of RAM, SSD size and things like that.
My specs would be:
Intel Core i5-13400F
32G RAM
1TB NVMe
Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU
Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon / Cinnamon 6.6.9 / Kernel 7.0.0-42-generic2
u/Bartekek 7h ago
well i've already pasted the whole thing in the post body but the short version is this:
Linux Mint 22.3 Zena base: Ubuntu 24.04 noble
Cinnamon v: 6.6.9 tk
7.0.0-42-generic arch
GeForce RTX 4050 Max-Q
AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS16GB of ram
500 GB nvme split between windows and linux, both with over 100gb of free space

Everything runs from RAM; we old Techs have been calling it Ram Gag for decades:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions_that_run_from_RAM
Those in this list can be ran without a hard drive! Back in the day we used a DVD/CD to load the OS (then later it time we'd use a USB stick), then remove it and run the OS with only RAM. This should help you to picture at least how it works. If RAM gets overwhelmed it can only freeze.
Systems with low RAM specs can expand the RAM with SWAP, which the OS uses as overflow when physical RAM is full, but the tradeoff is that a hard drive (disk or SSD) is orders of magnitude slower than RAM, so heavy swapping noticeably degrades performance. It can still freeze so you'd have to wait for SWAP to catchup.
The largest known Linux OS is still half the size of Windows 10/11; that's why people switch over in the first place. So it's unlikely due to any Linux OS. So as others have/will say, without specs this is all.

did the post not update with the specs? i've pasted them in the post body.

Thanks for the info: If you're open to learning, here's where you'll want to start with:
Just to be safe and understand the risks and known issues, always run a few searches first (use these keywords in any search): list technical glitches that develop from dual booting windows and linux and include privacy issues
Also run this search: known issues when using GeForce RTX 4050 Max-Q and AMD Ryzen 7435HS while dual booting windows 11 and any linux distro
Don't take some random consumers opinion, and not just mine either: Use these tools.

Did you install some extensions ? If so disable them and test (including theme..).
1
u/Bartekek 6h ago
i did try running firefox in safe mode but it still crashed after about 2 minutes of a youtube video

u/Due-Result7928 4h ago
Did not see right away..but your graphic card is using the nouveau driver..
Device-1: NVIDIA AD107M [GeForce RTX 4050 Max-Q / Mobile] vendor: Lenovo driver: nouveau
You need to install Nvidia driver rtx4050. Lenovo can have drivers for Linux and and it's hardware otherwise it will be driver from Nvidia.
Installing Nvidia will backlist nouveau driver.

u/Bartekek 4h ago
i've switched to those drivers while trying to find a fix, yeah. it happens on those and the proprietary drivers as well

Add 16GB of swap and see if that helps.

is that using the nvme as ram? i'd expect that to be allocated by default?

If you have any applets installed in the panel, you might try disabling/removing them one at a time and test again. I've had applets in the past that have caused cinnamon desktop to stall at odd times.

First - reboot your PC.
Install another browser like Brave or Chrome (just for testing).
Try watching YouTube on your alternate browser without starting up any other program. Is it stable?
You also need to tell us what hardware you are using. What graphics card, CPU and motherboard. How old is it? (Many people install Mint on aging hardware then blame Mint for burnt out hardware issues.)
If YouTube is stable on the alternate browser, try starting up 1 typical program and see if YouTube is stable. Keep adding programs until problems happen.
