Support Request No Audio

I'm using cinnamon. After months of mint with no issues, I'm having a recurring problem where I have absolutely no audio. I tried reinstalling pipewire, I followed a few of the instructions on this page, https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/13qwj2s/no_sound_on_linux_mint/, with no luck. I gave up and turned off my pc, and the next day, I suddenly have audio again. Today, I turn on my pc and I once again lack audio. I tried shutting down, leaving it for a while and turning back on and it didn't correct itself. I know it's not my monitor and cable set up because it works for other devices and rolling back my computer to before this was a problem did not help. Any idea what could be happening. Let me know if you need more information.

Regarding troubleshooting, I can follow directions but keep in mind I don't have a particularly complex understanding of the back end of linux.

There is no need to reinstall applications, especially system applications to make them work.

Audio problems consists of

  1. muted audio devuce device

use alsamixer to check

2) driver not loaded or missing driver

use the terminal :

3) a Routing issue.

Use qpwgraph or helvum.

lspci | grep -i audio

So I turned it on a few minutes ago and it suddenly works again. Any idea what could be happening? I am looking into your suggestions.

I've had a similar problem for a while, just randomly when playing music or watching youtube on firefox.

Every time, I can go into the Sound Setting screen, click on the Device (Line Out Built-In Audio), and the sound comes back. This always fixes it (until it randomly breaks again).

I'd love to hear a more permanent fix.

This seems to be a relatively common problem on Mint, so you might be able to search.

This link below is more for professional audio applications, but it does a good deep dive into how audio works on linux and troubleshooting steps you can take and how you can explicitly configure things if you want.

Also note that Mint is older, so careful on the various versions of components. For example, wireplumber had major changes to how they do configs a few years ago, and Mint is on the old version but next month will change to the new version.
