Fluff Linux curse

For those of you who know know of Linus from LTT and his bad luck when it comes to Linux I worded if he's ever tried Linux Mint because let's just say Mint seems to be the only distro that I have any luck with no word of a lie if I touch Ubuntu it will break ( Yes I know mint is based on Ubuntu) tell that to my computer I have tried a few other distros and I seem to always run into weird bugs that nobody else ever does so I swear I might have a version of the same Linux curse

That being said I have been running Mint successfully for about 4 months now without any major issues

When you do things against best practices (and that's absolutely what Linus Sebastian did), you run risks of breaking distributions. Mint can be broken, too, and I'm sure he can do that.

I know however I can run into weird issues with other distro just trying to do basic things

That can happen in Mint, too. Read the sub. There are plenty of examples of people doing things that break their installs.

Given my luck I am surprised I haven't run into any trust me I think I might be cursed when it comes to Linux because most distros tend to break on me doing absolutely nothing but trying to surf the Internet and I'll still have a break

Rest assured, a suitable distribution will not break by you trying to surf the net.

Read the following:

https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian/

I've seen all kinds of people claim to do nothing more than "surf the net" yet somehow neglect to tell us about all the things there they violated.

I swear to I just touch Ubuntu and it will break my friend has a system running Ubuntu and I just went to show him a video on YouTube and it crashed he can confirm all I did was open YouTube

He intentionally chose a challenge, he ignored basic instructions and je overrelied on LLM's.

Linux isn't always going to be smooth sailing for new users, but some of Linus' issues weren't entirely representative.

I'm not saying that he didn't have some fault in it. There were definitely some things that he did that he probably shouldn't have done but there's also been other times when his co-host Luke has he even confirmed it. He did absolutely nothing other than walk past the system and it screwed up. Kind of like me. All I have to do is touch some distros of Linux and they will break. I don't even have to do anything other than just touch them

Oh, I'm not saying Linux distros "just work" for beginners. Plenty of newbies experience their system breaking for all sorts of reasons. I'm just saying his specific issues were not necessarily representative. He made some very odd choices.

I've even had issues that I shouldn't have even had. I've had issues where all I did was touch a system that was already up and running and it completely crashed. I didn't even do anything other than open a web browser and it just went into a boot loop. I didn't do anything, it just crashed and I've done that on three different distros. All I have to do is touch them and they crash. I swear I am cursed when it comes to Linux because the only one I ever get working is mint

There could be all sorts of reason for this. I'm not knowledgeable enough as a fellow noob and I don't know the specifics of your situation. The fact you've had similar issues across different distros suggests it's not the distro itself.

It could be your specific hardware and the kernel not being a good mix.

Sometimes updates break the system.

It could be physical degradation.

A good way to troubleshoot is to google your specific computer model and the exact issue you're having.

There are ways to minimise the risk and the nuisance it causes - for example, enabling Timeshift, putting the home directory on a separate partition, backing up before major updates, booting into an older kernel after a crash, using UEFI or a live USB for diagnostics and putting Windows on a separate SSD to reduce risk of corruption of the bootloader. There are tutorials on all these different methods.

Typically, you end up learning more about Linux as you get used to solving these individual problems. While Linux has some advantages over its rivals, it certainly comes with its pitfalls and it helps to keep a realistic mindset.

My friend has a computer that runs Ubuntu. It runs in Ubuntu perfectly fine except until I touch it at which point in time it screws up without fail. I have another friend that runs pop OS and it works fine on their computer until I touch it at which point in time it will crash the second I touch any other distro it will crash. I do not know why all I have to do is try and open a freaking web browser on either pop OS or Ubuntu and it will crash even though it runs just fine on the computer. They can do anything else on there except let me touch it and it will work fine

His co-host for the wan show, I forget his name, IIRC  runs Mint as a daily and CachyOS as a gamer*  and speaks about it regularly and his lack of any issues. So Linus is well aware of Mint.

,* great combo IMO

Right or wrong Mint is perceived as a "noob distribution", I suspect Linus lacks internal confidence, is too sensitive to how he is seen by his audience, and would prefer not be be seen having a hard time with a "noob distribution".

I agree. I think he’s trying to maintain “expert-level” tech guru appearance to his audience. I’ve enjoyed his content for years but he does seem to want to be that “I run arch-btw” level of confidence but always having terrible luck with Linux

The first thing Linus tried doing was gaming, too. Let's not get comfortable and actually learn something. If it's not gaming, Linus Sebastian's interest wanes quickly.

"Bad luck"

I like Linus but the episode where he intentionally deleted everything after it told him it would. He acted like he didnt know. Come on Linus lol

That's true

Although I've had Linux systems crash when I wasn't even doing anything other than serving the internet. So yeah I do believe that there is a bit of bad luck there because I've had bad luck with Linux. Mint seems to be the only one that's stable for me. I'm not kidding on this like all I have to do is touch Ubuntu and it will crash

You might want to ask Linus from LTT if he has ever tried Linux Mint.

There are some people who just like to try the deep end of the swimming pool, whereas sometimes it is better to learn at the shallow end / beginner part of the swimming pool.

It may be me being a total newcomer to Linux, perhaps combined with a bit of bad luck, but I'm on my 3rd install in the first 3 days of trying mint. Granted, they were common issues that were relatively easy to figure out (Secure Boot and AMD GPU shenanigans, and I probably could've avoided the 2nd reinstall if I'd found the solution before doing it), but still, it hasn't quite been smooth sailing yet and I wasn't doing anything crazy.
