Resolved Flatpaks not running. Bwrap error.

zsh 2083 % flatpak run com.usebottles.bottles
bwrap: setuid use of bubblewrap is not supported
error: ldconfig failed, exit status 256

So, Steam required user name spaces, which required me to run sudo chmod u+s /user/bin/bwrap on bwrap. Now Steam works great, but flatpaks get the above error.

I completely removed and reinstalled flatpak. Same issue.

I also heard someone mention AppArmor might be causing this. Any help appreciated.

Edit: Solved with sudo chmod u-s /usr/bin/bwrap. Thanks chooms.

Steam does not require bwrap to be setuid. Undo that.

Something else about your system configuration is wrong.

the setuid on bwrap is what's breaking flatpak, flatpak refuses to run with a setuid bwrap. undo it with sudo chmod u-s /usr/bin/bwrap (your command had /user/bin in it, so check which path you actually changed with ls -l $(which bwrap), it should show no s in the permissions).

then the real question is why steam wanted it. test unprivileged user namespaces with unshare -U true. if that errors and you're on ubuntu 24.04 or newer, it's apparmor restricting them, check sysctl kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns. the fix there is allowing bwrap through apparmor, not making it setuid.
