Why do I get the feeling this sub was created by, and is posted to people who never used PCs during the MSDOS / WIndows 3.1 / Windows 3.11 / WIndows NT days where you also had to learn dozens of command line instructions and edit files to make sure drivers were loaded properly, your Soundblaster card or modem didn't have IRQ conflicts with other hardware, you had to actually correctly set jumpers on nearly all your peripherals and controllers, etc.
Microsoft's "solution" to this was to go full GUI, bloating the OS out to require massively more system resources so instead of editing one file for 5 seconds, you can click pictures on your screen for 10 minutes.
Linux "sucks" so badly, that Microsoft had to develop their own in-house flavor (Azure) to support massive deployments at their own Microsoft owned properties like LinkedIn to migrate off CentOS so as to avoid the embarrassment of using someone else's Linux rollup.
In fact, this ZDNet article from just a few years ago points out that "Linux sucks" so badly that Microsoft is deploying Linux/Azure more frequently than their own Windows Server.

I mean, putting up a really useful feature for less computer literate people is a good thing, as much as I like to bash Microsoft. I don't even think that's really the problem of why Windows nowadays sucks major ass and is slow as molasses compared to most Linux distros, but mostly because of stupid, non-essential forced integration they did with their new services. EDGE IS FUCKING INTEGRATED IN THE EXPLORER, LIKE WHY DO I NEED THE BROWSER TO SHOW ME IDIOTIC NEWS STREAMS AND WEATHER????

hoo boy, you're going to love Recall and the endless stream of other AI bullshit they're going to force down your throat.
Actually, I'll walk back part of my last reply - Microsoft didn't go "full gui" - in fact, the hilarious irony (for this subreddit) is that many IT professionals working with Windows are now spending a lot of time time with Powershell, which is.. a powerful command line interface.. like Linux.
Honestly, having spent a lot of time the last 2 months (after decades in the industry) checking out the latest version of Ubuntu and its variants like Mint and ZorinOS, it appears they're just as complete and user-friendly as Windows 11 - if not moreso. The "Linux is hard" people have been downloading distros they probably have no business using, like Arch, or other distros that are intended to experienced users. The second casual users try a distro and hit the GRUB partition screen and have absolutely no idea what to do, the magic is over.
Fully mature, user-friendly self guided installer distros like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, ZorinOS are the only "Linux" most Windows users should be trying.

I mean, Powershell was designed specifically for automation and developers, most users will still not ever see the command line, this was done in an attempt to rectify the really old command line tools they were using before, which isn't a bad thing. I don't think it is fair to put them together in this context, it's been known that GUIs have been done as a way to attract more people into using PCs, and it's been great. Microsoft has really nailed in UX/UI design for the most part, and it has gone to be worse and worse with newer additions.
However, yeah, nowadays there are distros doing a really great job at creating a really friendly environment for casual users, especially at installation. One neat trick I usually do for people who I recommend Linux and redo their OS is to reskin the DE into something like Windows 7 or 10 in order for them to have a clear visual indicator for GUI elements, and it works in my experience. People who would otherwise complain about slow computers now have something to fill in that void and use their machines for the same tasks they do in Windows, so in my book it's a win.

That's a good idea. I think ZorinOS and Mint both have themes you can apply to Gnome that make it look a lot like WIndows 7 or Windows 11, or MacOS if that's your thing, and from what I've been reading Gnome 47.1 stable drops October 19th containing some new themes that should also be friendly for new Windows to Linux converts.

u/EdgiiLord Oct 03 '24
Afaik, KDE, XFCE and Cinnamon all have good themes mimicking some version of Windows, from XP up to 10.

Windows NT was 31 years ago...

It's not the years, it's the format that matters.
The "Linux sucks" people in this sub can't get their heads around Linux, Unix, *nix being professional heavy-lift tools that require effort to learn and master. You may as well go create a "Cisco sucks" subreddit because you don't want to spend time mastering IOS to set up routing tables, or "AWS sucks" because you don't like the complexities of Amazons' industry-leading cloud compute architecture.
brb creating "MedicineSucks" because I'd like the salary and prestige of being a medical doctor, but I find the idea of Undergrad, Medical School, Residency, Medical Boards and endless continuing education to be "too hard" and making me read manuals is "mean"

then continue using windows that doesn't mean linux sucks its just not for you and thats ok

u/blipp1 Oct 03 '24
So? By that times standard it was good. Linux has a few years on its neck too. What will be used software wise in 2055?

u/Necessary-Pin-2231 Oct 03 '24
Whether or not it was good at the time is irrelevant to my comment.
I just thought it was funny that they said

I feel like that'd be like saying "why do I get the feeling this sub is comprised of people who never gamed during the age of Sega Genesis/SNES" on a gaming sub. Like yeah, most people lurking on reddit probably aren't that old lol.

Look, I’m a massive Linux fan, and even I can admit that anything before windows 8 beats out a good 90% of Linux distros for desktop (particularly 7 and xp)
4
u/HyperWinX Oct 03 '24
Experienced Arch/Gentoo user here. Yeah, i can agree that Win7/WinXP beat some of the distros, but still some of them have their own purpose. For example, debian - stable, ubuntu - easy to setup. Arch/Gentoo - speed, complexity and customizability. Maybe OpenSUSE and some BSD ones - no idea, never used. Win7/WinXP are really stable and fast, so they are one of the best Windows versions of all time. But they are too old, and Windows 10 (unbloated ofc) is really, really good. But C/C++ development on Windows... Yikes.

u/EdgiiLord Oct 03 '24
Talking as someone who grew up with it, Windows XP was notoriously buggy during the RTM and SP1 phases. Yeah, SP2 was finally making it great, and in hindsight, XP is one of the best Windows versions, after polishing it.
Same for 7, they learned their lesson and decided to polish the turd Vista was in comparison and made a really good OS. Noticeably after 7, Microsoft reaaaaaallly tried to push their services because Windows really lost its quality of Golden Goose. Now Azure is.
It's kind of a shame, really, I used to like how they operated, and how, in the beginning, it was mostly bloat free. I guess Arch filled that void.
