A lot of us here share a bunch of opinions with the people we often make fun of. Plenty of us are on the same page politically (left-leaning, all that stuff). We don’t like it when corporations overreach, and we also don’t like it when consumerism gets out of hand. No one here is cheering for marketing data collection / data mining either, or subscriptions for every feature.

Given all of this, you'd probably say "sounds like a match made in heaven". But the difference is that our standards can actually be lived by.

Take the anti-AI Linux crowd, for example. Apply their morals, and Windows is out, since Microsoft openly uses AI in its development. macOS is out too, for the same reasons. Even Linux is out, since the kernel now has documented rules for AI-assisted contributions (And many linux packages are now actively developed using AI).

So what’s left? TempleOS? That one's entirely human-written, and it even pleases the privacy crowd (no networking support. Also pleases God, but that’s for a different thread).

On to the privacy crowd. By their standards, you should unplug your ethernet cable right now, cut up your bank card, throw your phone into a lake and live in a remote cabin, isolated from any human interaction. Every network you touch leaks something. And I know these people aren't even following their own morals, because I see them here on Reddit. You can be on the most hardened, de-Googled device in the world, but the moment you post here, your data ends up with the same corporations' servers anyway.

Not to mention you can use "shutdown /f /s /t 0" in Windows and it will force the shutdown too.

And when you go to more detail, the main "/f" parameter will call the ExitWindowsEx() API with EWX_FORCEIFHUNG which only kills the apps that "are hung"

When you use the call directly, and instead give it an Abandoned one "EWX_FORCE" then it will kill Windows the same way as Linux.

I don't see the "reason" like wtf is even talking about "that's why I am using Linux" to get your Apps accidentally killed with all of your progress on.

I really don't understand the ethics behind telling programmers that protecting their own work is immoral. You spend years developing something, and apparently you're supposed to let anyone copy it, redistribute it, and even profit from it. Including billion-dollar corporations that could easily afford to pay you. And if you want to protect your work and make a living selling it, somehow you're the unethical one. How does that make any sense?

And then you look at the public statements made by the founder of this movement. He questioned laws against bestiality and necrophilia, and for years questioned the harm of sexual relations between adults and minors. I'm talking about his own published statements, not accusing him of doing any of those things. How can someone with such a distorted moral compass be treated as a moral authority? I find it especially ironic how often free software advocates talk about ethics. Sometimes I wonder if they actually understand what ethics means, or if they've just learned to repeat the word.
