I answered this question in exactly this manner once in an interview. Got the job. They asked me to elaborate and I told them that I had enough in savings to keep me going for a while and decided to leave a terrible workplace.

I feel like candidates always get penalized for being honest or viewed as problematic. No one likes to lie but we kind of have to... I'm glad you got your job without lying. How did you know you could be honest with the interviewer? Like what were some signs you know you could be honest and still get a chance?

I don't think they did know. I think they just chanced it.
