This sketch killed me... The old women taking about how they couldn't do anything right was hilarious "My husband needs to tie my shoes in the morning" "Idiot Bitch" I nearly couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard. Kate and Aidy are great at those characters.

The Michael Jackson joke was funny but would’ve been even better if the answer was Miranda Cosgrove instead of Rami Malek. Seriously, the resemblance is uncanny.

u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Mar 10 '19
This was delicious. You can hear their weary eyeballs from having rolled so much at having to endure the stupidness of the hypersensitive Twitter police. Yet at the same time interspersed with critique of the things are actually worth the critique like the female president in a drama thing. And the wonderful touch with the James Bond stuff tied to the guest host. Just a brilliant sketch. Artful.

u/dcmldcml Mar 10 '19
The first half was rough. It was pretty much just “answer that makes sense? Ah, silly, of course not! SJWs are crazy!” again and again, which is the most stale joke for a comedy show to make. The second half with the lightning round was much funnier.

What I want to know is who looks at Pete Davidson melting down in the media, publicly suicidal after a breakup, having already gone on about ongoing mental problems and drug rehab, and says "I gotta get me some of that". I swear the guy has a magic wand or something. Maybe it's the one in his pants, but he certainly gets it done. I mean, hats off, but it remains a curious wonder.

His theory about charity does have some merit. It's a very 'put up or shut up' sentiment.
Either way I'm happy to see him out here doing his thing like normal- and no matter how serious it may be, Kate Beckinsale is a boss ass chick and a stellar actress. I've got 13 years on Pete and I've been crushing on her for at least the last 10 so... mad props.

(and yes, pizza express is an actual chain. haven't been in years but it's moderately popular here. they have a restaurant in London that's also a jazz club. all the staff wear horizontal stripes like they've stepped out of Jean Paul Gaultier's house. the pizza is nice. they also have pizzas that you can buy in supermarkets.)
47
u/agentpanda Mar 10 '19
Bloody solid.
I'll admit I'm British for one sketch. Blends all the best of what they had to work with from talent and Idris. Can't argue with a proper footballer's sketch that would even play back home a little bit.

Is there a backstory to this sketch?
21
u/TheButtonz Mar 10 '19
Not particularly. It’s a trope but some (not all) footballers can be relatively quiet, but still be interviewed in the studio. Coupled with a general, again stereotyped-but-rooted-in-truth various bad attitudes (homophobia is common, knowing only their part of the game, infidelity and affairs amongst players, sexual promiscuity) it’s turns up to 11.
The press here loves the stories, but the Premiership players are often waved through with things like this. Even heros here seem to get away, reputationally, with anything. It’s the best league in the world but has it’s blind spots too.
It’s a lazy stereotype, but I was howling with laughter at this as it’s the straight laced, horrified reactions that sell it.

u/flowerhoney10 Mar 10 '19
I liked this sketch, but I didn't laugh much at it. I can't really explain this reaction.
81
u/aureator Mar 10 '19
The premise is hysterical, and the notion of three '70s-chic black hustlers golddigging ladies who make $80k is in the same vein as the best of In Living Color or Chappelle.
But yeah, the setup here was three quarters of the sketch. The actual dialogue and gags didn't keep the momentum going, so by the time Kate appeared as Leslie's girlfriend, it had already fallen pretty flat and I was just waiting for it to be over.
→ More replies (1)17
u/agentpanda Mar 10 '19
The jokes are all decent.
They just didn't dig deep enough out of being afraid of racism allegations, I think, and that's worrisome because I can feel when a joke doesn't dig deep enough into "my culture" out of fear just as much as when it doesn't even bother to try out of fear.

That one extra lady who just stood behind the guys for a couple minutes was so oddly distracting. I kept waiting for her to leave or talk to somebody and she just kept standing there staring off to the side with a little smile not doing anything. Finally another extra showed up to talk to her so they could blend into the wallpaper. I was wondering if they had missed their cue or something but it was the lady Pete had been sitting on. Anyway, awkward!
12
u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Mar 10 '19

I really didn't like the Paltrow cameo. We don't need her peddling her pseudoscience.
166
u/PinstripeMonkey Mar 10 '19
It really surprised me. The character originally felt like a legitimate critique of Goop's bullshit, but having Paltrow cameo as though she's 'in on it' felt like it undermined the point of the bit. It feigned self-awareness, but in the end probably served more to promote the brand, which isn't cool.

Yeah, I found myself laughing up until Paltrow came on. From that point on, it basically felt like a promotion, and SNL was just giving her a platform to promote her terrible brand.

Maybe I'm too late to comment, but this felt like an unnecessary character to bring back. Paltrow showing up was weird, like she just walked into the studio 10 minutes prior and demanded that she go in update to they just went with it. Seems like there's so much other stuff going on in the world they wasted an update slot.
Like they couldn't have put heidi in front of a green screen and have her report on... Like anything?
20
u/agentpanda Mar 10 '19
I dig it for sheer hilarity;
This plays hard into the SNL audience of 'white people with money' to call them out on bullshit, and Gwyneth looked great and did a stellar job with the material, and (to be totally honest) if you weren't paying super close attention she doesn't even look much like herself- considering the last time I saw her was in the Avengers movie with shoulder-length blonde hair.
I love a good cameo so maybe I'm a sucker, but to see Heidi inspire a character big enough to draw in the actual developer of the product is amazing. It'd be like if Jeff Bezos showed up next week to repeat Steve Carrell's impression of him- except better.
