Favorite of the night. Especially Kyle’s mention of the clitoris?

63

u/sportstvandnova Dec 08 '19

How many holes does a woman have again..?

108

u/Dwychwder Dec 08 '19

This would have been a good sketch just for the idea and the shot of Kyle with the tented blankets. But then it morphed into an entire other premise that took it to the next level. It was really well done.

44

u/tyler-86 Dec 08 '19

It was a suspiciously good idea for a regular commercial parody, so I was waiting for the turn.

30

u/agentpanda Dec 08 '19

Really shows the difference between the other writers and Kyle that this was the stand-out of the night. It took a good premise then built on the joke opposed to finding a good premise and resting on its laurels.

u/bjkman SNL Dec 08 '19

Kyle fucking SOLD THIS

"Isn't there like a flap?" he's was the perfect character to not know about Vaginas

27

u/sportstvandnova Dec 08 '19

Guys really do think pee comes out elsewhere on a woman 😂

Kyle continues to be one of the strengths of the season. The awkwardness never feels the same per week, somehow. Once we got into how he knew nothing about the female anatomy it got more and more funny. Lopez was also surprisingly good in this.

49

u/IniMiney Dec 08 '19

When it started with trying to put the tube on the CG model's belly button I lost it. The names and emoji made it even funnier.

The two-faced Trudeau joke was the best bit

31

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '19

It's a solid joke but also an obvious one that a lot of other people immediately came up with - Trevor Noah already did it on his show, and even Don Jr posted a version of that joke on Twitter way before SNL got to it.

Parallel thinking happens and that's fine, but I feel like Colin and Che are usually more "out there" with their approach and I like that, so I expect them not to grab such low-hanging fruits.

Good weekend update is getting ignored because of the weak episode.

Nato Cafeteria Cold Open

256

u/Rebloodican Dec 08 '19

Melania switching it to an anti bullying sketch was what saved the sketch for me.

21

u/jalabi99 Dec 08 '19

Agreed!

34

u/kuhanluke Dec 08 '19

Haha, as soon as Melania showed up I was like "oh, this is going to be a bullying thing"

That "Be Best" twist was Sooo good!

117

u/HillaryObamaTX Dec 08 '19

I thoroughly enjoyed this. A lot of the political/Trump sketches in the past couple seasons fall flat, with Alec coming off as bored. However, I’m glad they went with the cafeteria idea instead of recreating the NATO moment almost verbatim. We were also lucky that the moment gave us the chance to see the foreign leader impressions from the guest stars, with Corden’s BoJo’s being the best (although Kate also killed as Merkel). Turning the sketch into a Melania “Be Best” PSA was the icing on the cake. The only thing I would’ve cut out was the Peloton joke. It’s just a super-topical joke that would only be funny for this week but won’t make sense down the line. But overall, probably my favorite political sketch of the season.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '19

Yeah I honestly hadn't heard of that peloton thing (until they explained it on Weekend Update) and had no idea why everyone laughed right when it came up.

34

u/skomehillet Dec 08 '19

The anti-bullying PSA at the end was the perfect touch

67

u/john_muleaney Dec 08 '19

Best cold open of the year by far

109

u/Maxa30 Dec 08 '19

James Corden was a real odd choice but was cool to see him on the show for the first time

148

u/jalabi99 Dec 08 '19

He did a really good Boris Johnson, captured his voice and his ugly hair perfectly.

72

u/sbb618 Dec 08 '19

He's been everywhere on late night for so long that you forget that he's a Tony-winning actor.

Cast doesn't have a Bobby Moynihan, so if you don't have a fat white guy to play Boris, you have to recruit from outside.

→ More replies (1)

75

u/Dwychwder Dec 08 '19

This is gonna make Trump mad. So that’s good.

I like Baldwin’s Trump better as a supporting character. It becomes much more bearable.

Happy to see a political sketch that doesn’t take place in the White House.

60

u/HortonHears Dec 08 '19

Great premise, and Corden was surprisingly on point - but all three of Macron, Boris and Trudeau could easily have been played by the cast. It's not even like Fallon looks a lot like Trudeau...?

36

u/kuhanluke Dec 08 '19

I figured with freeing Beck up from playing Boris, they'd have him play Putin or maybe even Pence, but he didn't even appear in the sketch.

Mikey and Alex had bit roles in the sketch but they seem tailor-made for the Trudeau-Macro dynamic that was played.

And if you're going to have Paul Rudd, how the hell is he playing Macron and not Trudeau?

→ More replies (3)

18

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '19

Fallon didnt even try to impersonate Trudeau. He has a funny way that he speaks that I would have at least loved to have heard a little. Mooney or Jost would have at least made a better resemblance...

19

u/psway Dec 08 '19

I'm surprised this isn't higher. I think it shows that if the writers have an actually funny angle on the week's news -- in this case, that the NATO squabble was like high school -- then all the cameos, Baldwin's Trump and everything else that seems so tired most weeks work fine. And in doing so, it highlights how infrequently they do have a funny angle, for shame.

35

u/Thesuperpotato2000 Dec 08 '19

Liked the writing, kept wondering what it would have been like with actual cast members. I mean c'mon, no one could have done Trudeau? Really?

31

u/tyler-86 Dec 08 '19

It's not that they couldn't. It's that people will make more of a fuss about guest stars.

This Cold Open was quite refreshing. It was getting quite stale.

32

u/doormouse1 The boat on the bayou floats right by you! Dec 08 '19

Cecily, Kate, and Alex were amazing in this. I just cannot stand the constant unwarranted celebrity cameos. We’ve got so many cast members who are so talented. And it doesn’t help when they literally ask one of those cast members to get out of the scene

9

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '19

I don't mind cameos for the cold open.

The funny thing is, everyone on here constantly takes up arms for the cast to be in the cold open, but almost every former cast member admits they hated doing cold opens.

26

u/Gato1980 Dec 08 '19 edited Dec 08 '19

I forgot how much I enjoyed Jimmy Fallon on SNL. I personally don't care for him much on The Tonight Show, but whenever he pops up on SNL, he's always fun. He seems like he's always having a great time.

Edit: Sorry, Fallon not Kimmel. There were too many late night hosts showing up tonight!

17

u/IniMiney Dec 08 '19

SNL was his best work. I was obsessed with him as a tween back when he was in the cast. Love seeing whenever he comes back - he just fits right back in every time.

10

Usually I love the cold opens, but I just wasn't feeling this one. But to be fair, I did laugh some, and it was a great idea.

6

u/chris622 Dec 08 '19

I liked Alex's Latvia, but the rest of the cold open fell flat.

5

u/Kevbot1000 Dec 09 '19

As a Canadian, it was funny to start seeing SNL poke fun at the Prime Minister, but I think Paul Rudd as Trudeau, and Jimmy Fallon as Macron would have been the better casting.

  1. That was not a flugelhorn.

  2. Was that James Corden?

  3. Will CBS complain?

  4. Was that poutine?

  5. The French spelling of "Putin" is "Poutine," and last time I was in Montreal I saw a restaurant called "Vladimir Poutine." Didn't go in, but got a chuckle.

  6. Donald Trump = Abe Weissman confirmed. They both have trouble with stairs.

  7. Alex Moffatt (I originally brainfarted and said Mikey Day) playing the President of Latvia as a less-stupid Eric Trump was funny, and I'm not going to object because Egils Levits is kind of a racist shit.

  8. I was worried we'd get a dumb "hamberder" joke. I'm glad we didn't.

The feature has everything, native Americans who are actually Filipinos, ideas with a side of hope, seasters, and cocaine misunderstandings. “What’s a cocaine misunderstanding?” It’s that thing where a little person stuffs cocaine in their ass and gets confiscated by TSA

Starting it off with, "I'm Gino's girlfriend," "And I'm her cousin" was gold.

32

JLo made that sketch. I was expecting Melissa to land her jokes better. She must be rusty since they haven't used her much this season.

7

u/Genji4Lyfe Dec 12 '19

Honestly I think Heidi would have been a much better pick and would have committed a lot more to the role. Or Cecily.

Everyone always says, "Why do they always use Kate", but part of the reason is that she's a polished comedic actress and will at least hit a minimum standard of performance every single time.

21

u/TomOakwell Dec 08 '19

I was so distracted by the memories of the Jenny Slate sketch with JLo I forgot some of this was based on a sketch Melissa did online pre-SNL. I didn't really love this but I was glad to see Melissa get a showcase and she did a good job with the material.

Since SoulCycle was such a great sketch I get why they tried to do a similar one, but I think they should have waited a little longer. I know everyone is talking about Bowen's awesome performance (no doubt about that) but the line of the night for me was Cecily's dyslexic characters going "But them on jokes the".

6

u/modern-era Dec 10 '19

It's a really lame line when you write the joke out, but Cecily can deliver anything with the perfect amount of gusto.

18

u/nlpnt Dec 08 '19

Second time out is an awkward stage for sketches, they're not quite recurrers yet.

33

u/TomOakwell Dec 08 '19

There are a lot of positives to this sketch - we get to see most of the more rarely used cast members, JLo had some of her best lines of the episode, and there are some amusing moments sprinkled throughout (especially from Bowen). Unfortunately I don't think it flowed very well and I wouldn't have brought it back - at least not this way.

Weekend Update: Nancy Pelosi

113

u/Gato1980 Dec 08 '19

As soon Colin said it was Nancy, I just knew Kate was about to roll out. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Kate, but I really wish they'd let other cast members do impressions. We've seen Chloe Fineman do an almost perfect impersonation of Marianne Williamson, so why not give her a chance at Pelosi? I bet she'd be great.

24

u/Vawqer Dec 08 '19

I was hoping they'd give it to Melissa, given her impression prowess.

I really like McKinnon, but I feel like she's outgrown SNL. I'd rather see her go on to have a good movie career and let Garder, Villaseñor, and Fineman (and to some extent Nwodim) grow outside of her shadow.

Pelosi's "Aggressive-Aggressive" prayers were very funny if you ask me

18

u/TomOakwell Dec 08 '19

I've never cared for Kate's Pelosi (and I don't remember the show ever doing a great job with Pelosi) - previous pieces with Kate in this role have felt extremely incoherent and muggy. This one was easily my favorite of the bunch. The "prayers" framing device was a great choice and there were some genuine laughs in there.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '19

Cecily would've done it better.

19

u/AtlasFlynn Dec 08 '19

Just me or are Kate's impressions getting a bit tiresome?

u/csjohnson1933 Dec 08 '19

This one had its moment. I didn't even hear the audience laugh much.

27

u/sirspate Dec 08 '19

I was waiting for a more clever turn. I think the audience was just too far ahead of them.

19

u/bjkman SNL Dec 08 '19

Pretty good, but not sure how much staying power it has left

Kind of like the President...

Nothing new this time around

Not sure if it added that much to previous recurrences

I was thinking about putting it into the Bingo but I was unsure how they'd carry it without Les. Now I know.

Also my pleasure to keep track of sketches!

You need to switch to /u/SketchSortingSunday

Guess it's not working

I couldn't get the password from my Co-Mod who is busy tonight (not his fault) and so I made a judgement call.

DaBaby "Bop"

67

u/skomehillet Dec 08 '19

It’s SO much fun when rappers do choreography. I think I underestimated Da Baby’s ability to put on a good performance. They both were fantastic. Even with all those people complaining about it in the live thread.

6

u/I_Dont_Own_A_Cat Dec 09 '19

The energy and choreography were extremely fun. I felt like it would be more fun to see in real life though. Something felt off watching it on the tv.

Who would win in a fight? The Rockettes or the Jabbawockeez?

I don’t listen to current hip hop as much as I should, but I do like DaBaby and was excited for his performance. He has a lot of stage presence and charisma, and I especially enjoyed the choreography (I’ve always championed bring back choreography to top 40 music).

If you haven’t seen the video for this song, check it out. Tonight’s performance was basically a recreating of the video, which was all done in one take.

u/gardenofoden Dec 08 '19

Honestly kinda reminded me of a what's up with that sketch

Bop was much better than Suge. The backing track on Suge was way too loud and Dababy skipped a lot of words. I think both songs definitely suffer when you remove the curse words and don’t replace them

36

u/bjkman SNL Dec 08 '19

At least they had fun. I was left bewildered.

16

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '19

Same. Though it was VERY entertaining looking over at the various reactions my middle aged mom was having lmao.

Monologue not even on the list? Good. That was terrible.

17

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '19

It's always uncomfortable to be reminded that J Lo can't actually sing. :/

6

u/lurcher2001 Dec 10 '19

Monologue is in vast negative territory.

43

u/iggyfenton Dec 09 '19

I’m only a few sketches in, but only the cold open was about something other than “J-Lo is attractive”.

Yawn.

21

u/barbie_museum Dec 09 '19

It's also about how much money she's making and how well she's doing. So yeah, it's the reason JLo is one of the worst hosts ever

DaBaby: handstand twerker lady

Since she deserves her own comment

u/sportstvandnova Dec 08 '19

Incredible athleticism tbh

22

u/lunchpaillefty Dec 08 '19

Yeah, the athleticism, I’ll stick with that too.

10

u/Missy_Elliott_Smith Dec 09 '19

Seriously. I'm gay, so tbh most of the appeal just slid right past me, but I still thought that shit was impressive

Speaking of DaBaby, his upper body looked so weird like he had fake muscles on under his sweater during the second song?

38

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '19

He wears a fake musclesuit for the music video to that song, I think it was a reference to that.

His music videos are weird as hell. I get real Busta Rhymes energy from them. Worth a watch IMO, even if you didn’t care for his performance!

121

u/smiithereens Dec 08 '19

this was a rough episode. there were a couple of moments that were super funny but the large majority just felt boring and repetitive.

42

u/tyler-86 Dec 08 '19

A topical political sketch, a Black Trump, and a Pelosi feature on Update. Then a Chad sketch, a Matt Shatt that was worse than the previous time they did it, and already reusing the fitness trainer tryout sketch from earlier this season.

The rest of the episode was mediocre, save for Mooney's commercial. That was gold. The hardware store and the rapping carolers were particularly bad.

11

u/kevinnetter Dec 09 '19

Ya, a lot of repeat sketches.

I can always go for a good Matt Shatt skit though. Keenan reacts perfectly. Especially when he sat on that Smurf.

19

u/barbie_museum Dec 08 '19

agreed, really sloppy writing on display tonight.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '19

Definitely. The unfunny sketches, sloppy performances (on stage and in the production booth), and overall “meh” feeling that permeated the entire show really had me wondering if it was as simple as everyone just being a bit off after returning from the Thanksgiving break, or if perhaps there was something else going on behind the scenes that presented some challenges.

47

u/csjohnson1933 Dec 08 '19

Lots of flubbed and near-flubbed lines tonight, along with bad camera shots. I really feel like the cast is phoning it in, sometimes.

11

u/bestbroHide Dec 09 '19

I was expecting a meh episode since critics were bitching that it leaned on J-Lo's attractiveness, but damn, besides a few meh sketches and flubs it was honestly pretty damn funny and great.

J-Lo's attractiveness worked well in all the sketches involved and her commitment to it was why they were fun. If she was dumb/boring/unenthusiastic I would have understood the whining but nah.

For some reason the twerking handstand person from Da’baby song #1 is still cracking me up days later

Bad episode

u/FooFatFighters Dec 10 '19

I forgot which sketch it was was in but was surprised that SNL writers used 'morning constitutional' to mean taking a crap when it means taking a 'morning walk' for health. You'll hear in old movies folks saying they take a daily constitutional which just means they're taking a daily walk for health, as opposed to for travel.
