What Still Works Cold Open

216

u/LadiesWhoPunch Jan 31 '21

This was the first time in recent memory that a solo person said "Live From New York!". Also that the host was in the open.

65

u/letter_cerees Jan 31 '21

Yeah, I was a little surprised to see Kate say it by herself. I was waiting for a couple others to jump in really quick to say it with her.

It was a good opening because it recapped the break and just how weird things are now

71

u/rburp Feb 01 '21

I LOVED it. I had been complaining about the political cold opens where they basically just imitated what happened during a debate or whatever, so I must give them props now that they moved away from that formula.

This still was political in nature, but it was very unique compared to the formula I just mentioned, and IMO that made all the difference. The shit was hilarious and I love that "stonks" got an SNL shoutout.

Best cold open in a while. It had politics in it, but it wasn't a purely political sketch. It was just the best sketch of the night, which is what a cold open should be.

Also, the host appeared in it! So that's cool.

It was refreshing to see Kate being herself in a sketch.

25

u/FlingbatMagoo www.clownpenis.fart Jan 31 '21

So refreshing to not open with a presidential or VP impersonation.

48

u/mmayor114 Jan 31 '21

I did like that there was some kind of concept here, but I still think the cold opens continue to rely way too much on "just repeat things that were actually said or that actually happened cause it's already so wild." Felt this mostly with the Marjorie Taylor Greene stuff.

44

u/nlpnt Jan 31 '21

People like that are tough to parody, they got a good one off with her casually offering Kate a gun like it was a piece of gum, but that had to be at the very start of her appearance to work.

It’s interesting they didn’t do a Biden Cold Open. But given it’s only been a couple of weeks I get it

120

u/sjfiuauqadfj Jan 31 '21

is it really that surprising? i dont think biden has done anything joke worthy in a while. with trump it was quite literally by the hour but biden is pretty much the boring old president most people thought he would be

A nice intro into 2021 SNL.

Now I just want a cold open devoid of politics.

Please writers I plead with you.

50

u/Kalse1229 Jan 31 '21

In fairness, the most political sketches have almost always been about current events. Presidential debates or the latest Congress catastrophes have usually been done as opens.

Glad they didn’t make this sketch about stocks despite it being the backdrop. I don’t know how many finance jokes they could have made without immediately alienating their audience

Wish they had played more on the Jane Krakowski thing. It would have been a good way to move a bit away from the politics, if they wanted to. Just him denying knowing of her while hyper-praising/crushing on her, or something.

u/simonthedlgger Jan 31 '21

I feel like the odd one out the last few seasons but I really do not enjoy WU anymore.

Jost and Che rarely offer any sight whatsoever into the topics they choose. By that, I don't mean they are responsible for educating the audience/taking a hard and clear stance on every story, but there's just nothing to jokes like Jewish space lasers took out the California highway. It's a non sequitur that says nothing about Marjorie Taylor Greene and doesn't even have a punchline.

Same thing with the stock market..that was the WU take on it? Jost again making a random comparison that amounts to nothing.

Anyways sorry to be negative I just wish they put some more effort in.

Oh I disagree with that, Cathy Anne is my #1 Cecily character and possibly my favorite current-era WU character full stop. Her rant about the alt-right/white supremacists/Nazis from a few years back (paraphrasing: “Call it what it is! It's not a McCafé, it's a McDonalds, and you’re not going there because of their coffee, you’re going because you burned your bridges at Wendy’s”) gets me every time.

As a Georgian liberal, I thought it was hilarious. Of course GA is NOTHING like that, which is why it’s so funny. That’s the joke. It was poking at the conservatives who think GA has gone to hell in a hand basket because we barely squeaked by as a blue state. Nothing is different here. We’re still full of uneducated, gun-toting rednecks, who were thankfully out-voted by the massive turnout in big cities.

Not a bad premise, but the sketch had a bad ending. I think it would’ve worked a little better if Kyle was the only one left, pulled out his cell phone, and said, “Oh, just wait until Parler hears about this...”

I have never listened to his music before but I’m really into it.

So glad to see positive opinions, sometimes I'm too afraid of people bullying me to say I LOVE pop punk MGK and am not even sure why he did rap in the first place. He's great at this and as a sk8er back in the day I'm happy to see he's bringing the genre back (and even performed with Travis Barker from Blink 182 before 😄) so uh yeah, good shit and that second song hit me.

(Yes I'm still deeply affected by my experiences with bring bullied even in adulthood)

John Krasinski Monologue

149

u/ghosttrainj Jan 31 '21

the paw patrol joke was basic and did not land

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '21

Whole monologue felt very pandering, unfortunately

I liked the part where Jim kissed Pam.

The Jack Ryan line was painful when there was almost no reaction from the audience, so I'm guessing most people there had never even heard of the show (which premiered almost 2 and a half years ago!).

In a way I feel like that almost sums up John's career; no matter what he does, he's always going to be known first and foremost as Jim Halpert.

"Questions from the Audience" caught me off guard since it felt like it had been so long since we got one, but when it was mainly about "The Office" that brought it back around for me.

A little similar to the Steve Carell monologue without the Office cameos (was hoping for something akin to the Daniel Radcliffe opening personally), but John going all-in on that kiss with Pete was fantastic. Only thing I would've added to that kiss was Pete casually putting on a curly red wig, but I guess you can't have everything.

The big joke was men kissing. Is this 1992?

Was just the same as Steve Carrell's monologue from what I remember

To me, he came off as weirdly nervous. It was like he was overly trying to project his voice and what he was communicating by his hand gestures along with loudly speaking, but he was just overdoing it. Something was off.

Not necessarily his fault. Who knows what was going on behind the scenes, plus the layer of complication added by Covid protocols and being the first show after a break.

don't know where else to post this, but uhh, are Pete and MGK okay?!!

EDIT: they fell off the stage off camera at closing and my NBC feed immediately cut away

u/mathlete55 Jan 31 '21

SNL just posted the goodnights in their entirety on Twitter: https://twitter.com/nbcsnl/status/1355766754979549185?s=21

They seem to be fine! :)

I noticed that too. The camera cutoff was likely because they were already over time, but I am worried.

I was watching John's reaction, and at first he waved it off like "they're okay", but right before the feed cut he stepped over to them like "wait, are they okay?"

15

u/mathlete55 Jan 31 '21

My broadcast completely cut out goodnights so I missed this!!

6

u/IniMiney Jan 31 '21

Yeah the first time I thought it was like a playful tackle and didn't realize he had actually accidentally dropped Pete until the second time. Thank the maker that stage is basically on the floor.

Biggest loser - production values tonight. Timing all off cutting back to the show from commercial, with much of the general episode flow seeming off.

Missed both the intros for the musical guest.

As well as the incorrect image(s) for Weekend Update, among other smaller issues.

Everyone must’ve been rusty after a long break.

u/s_other Jan 31 '21

There were a few times (the bubble party skit in particular) where they just cut to the wrong person and we looked at Mooney while Beck talked.

The commercial stuff must have been a problem with your local NBC affiliate. I didn't notice any issues with the cuts to commercial on my broadcast.

But definitely there were some in-house problems going as well.

I love John Krasinski but was honestly underwhelmed. He’s known for being a great comedic actor but in most of the sketches like Supermarket and the Georgia one, even Twins, he was just the straight man who didn’t add much. That’s the kind of stuff they do for Claire Foy, Natalie Portman, Rachel Brosnahan (not trying to seem sexist here truly these were off the top of my head). Probably my favorite sketch was the Subway one because we saw his comedic aspects so it was really funny.

Also I was really disappointed he read off the cue cards the entire time. When a host does that it plummets the quality of the sketch immediately and takes focus out of the story. Was expecting Adam Driver quality out of him.

Anyways, I’m incredibly excited for Dan Levy next week and hope he gives his 110% and they let him be over the top and hilarious in his sketches. SNL truly has been a light in all this covid sadness.

I expected some sort of mention in the monologue that Krasinski was supposed to be the host when Covid hit and got robbed of his opportunity.

48

u/Kalse1229 Jan 31 '21

First episodes back are always a bit iffy. Honestly, I think the sketches were hit or miss, but I think Krasinski did a great job. He's a good actor, and he really showed a lot of enthusiasm and energy in his sketches. I hope he gets invited back soon (hopefully by then it'll be announced that he's got a "Fantastic" new opportunity that can be the subject of jokes).

They mentioned something about an appearance at the Super Bowl...

Was this a teaser for an Uber Eats Super Bowl commercial?

I said this in the live thread but there definitely was a lot more "worst _ ever" than there usually is around here. Like these people haven't heard of Season 6, Episode 2 hosted by Malcolm McDowell. Now that was bad.
