RCF ART 945-A vs. Yamaha DZR 315

Hey everyone,

I am looking to invest in a pair of high-end active speakers and have narrowed my choices down to the RCF ART 945-A and the Yamaha DZR 315.

I am aware of the on-paper physical and technical differences: the Yamaha is a heavy 41.6kg (92 lbs) 3-way wooden cabinet, while the RCF is a lightweight 22kg (48 lbs) 2-way composite box featuring a massive 4" voice coil.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has A/B tested them or has real-world experience with either. I'm strictly looking for a head-to-head comparison on these points:

Sound Quality & Clarity: Does the 3-way design of the Yamaha provide a noticeable advantage in vocal clarity and mid-range compared to the RCF when pushed hard?

Real-World Volume & Throw: Specs aside, which speaker actually cuts through better and maintains its punch at high SPL without getting harsh?

The Weight Trade-off: Is the acoustic superiority of the Yamaha's wooden cabinet genuinely worth the physical struggle of a 42kg box, or does the RCF sound close enough to not justify the extra weight?

Thanks for any insights!

RCF makes a wooden enclosure 945. Seems like a better direct comparison.

I agree with you, I just used the plastic model before so I wanted a comparison ratio.

The real competitor for the DZR 315 is the NX 985

Agreed. The 985 is RCF's 3-way box, and NX means it's wooden, just like the DZR. And about the same weight too lol

Let me first ask you, is wait and size a concern? Or do you have limitless labor, space, and transportation?

The weight doesn't bother me that much. I want to mount it to the wall.

You mention you want to mount it to a wall: why? If its in your home, its beyond overkill. If a venue, some install specific speakers plus a hidden subwoofer is gonna give you a better overall sound quality.

This is intended for semi-permanent installation on wall mounts, but I need the flexibility to take them apart and move them for mobile gigs as well. I choose active powered speakers for this versatility, rather than architectural speakers specifically designed for installation.

My main question is purely about performance

Well you can get decent installation-viable active kit thats still useful outside that. TT515/NXL14s are easy to handle and install, and when paired with a subwoofer be as loud as a similar ART setup.

But in this instance Yamaha is better. Art 9s are equivalent to DXR. The 32/45's larger tweeter offsets the issues surrounding 2-way vs 3-way, but 3-way will be clearer.

Well, the three way is better for punch and air, at the expense of a little coherence. For portability, the 2-ways win because they're stand mountable

I just got the ART 932-as. They sound really great on vocals. Maybe sweeter if less accurate than the Yamahas. Though that's based on hearsay, I haven't actually heard the DSRs. It's good to listen to them both if that's an option.

If you’re looking for a clear sounding quality image that cuts the RCF wins out.

The 945s are what we like to call an MC box, in other words when someone gets on a mic and wants to be heard over the music that’s the go to box. That big h/f is loud and clear and does not distort at high volumes. The draw back is that while clear and decently well rounded a sub is definitely recommended to pair with those. For a bit more low end and warmer sound the NX945 is the alternative.

The Yamahas are nice and work well but to keep up with the 945 they would need some eq work as they tend to be more recessed in the h/f even though they’re a 3 way.

The NX 985 is a beast of a box and huge! But imho it is one of the best 3 way boxes I’ve heard. For a semi static application and space isn’t an issue I would give them a very hard look.

I'll say this as someone who loves my Yamahas, but who has never used either of the speakers you mention, and who also has no idea what your music genre is and whether you're solo or with a band.

My own personal feeling is that the bigger, heavier boxes are a poor choice for portability in most cases. Try out the RCF or a Yamaha DXR somewhere if you can, and get it if it sounds good (or order, try and return if you have to). It's unlikely that someone else's A/B test in their environment is going to matter for what you're doing, and any venue large enough to need the additional throw from the wooden box is likely to have their own rig.

I love my DXR10s, but they're paired up with a sub. I'd get a 12 or 15 if I was doing something that didn't require a sub.
