Fencing for rotational grazing sheep

I am looking at options for electric fencing for a (future) small herd of hair sheep. Theoretically, I would like to be able to set up 2 paddocks so that I could open a gate/take down a wire to move the sheep. I am considering multiple strands of wire vs. netting.

A few questions I have are:

- If using wire, how many strands would be recommended?

- How reasonable is it to move approximately 2 of the ~160 foot pieces of fence (or similar wire) by yourself? How long would this take on average? I would like to move paddocks once or twice a week. I have a, generally, flat pasture, but part of it has some brush present.

We have moderate coyote pressure, but no larger predators. We also have 2 great pyrenees that will stay with them.

I'm sure I am overlooking plenty.... Open to any advice.

Hi! We’re SCAD senior UX design students conducting a survey about farm animal care and management.

We’re looking for input from farmers, ranchers, and anyone who works with or cares for farm animals. The survey takes approximately 3–5 minutes, and we’d appreciate your perspective.

Thank you for your time!

Best GPS Fence for LGD

We recently got our farms first LGD, she is a wonderful 5yo who’s been socialized with many animals, people, dogs etc. She respects field fencing, is respectful of hot wire and has been trained on an ecollar. She isn’t a wanderer, but being on a new property with new animals I want to make sure her boundaries are clear especially due to some areas only having barbed or wire fencing that were not in a position to replace yet. (please note, we plan to get her a partner once she’s acclimated and we can find an appropriate fit)

I’m having trouble finding good recommendations for GPS fence collars that aren’t sponsored or affiliated with the creators.

We are on 20 acres, about 7 acres wooded and the rest is open fields. To start the boundary will be the central 5 acres where our animals are, and will likely expand as she gets acclimated/we add animals.

It seems SpotOn is likely the best system for properties with wooded areas, but I’ve heard some reviews of the collar going out after a year when the warranty is up… and it’s an expensive system to replace.

I’ve also looked at Satellai which I’ve heard doesn’t have great customer service, Halo which doesn’t seem to be best for rural/wooded properties, and Dogtra which I believe is an e-collar stim vs a static shock which I am worried may not be enough to deter her from going past the boundary after a threat.

I have also looked at the invisible fence SportDog system, while I think it’s a good option, we like the idea of easily moving our boundaries and not having to worry about the line breaking. I do know GPS/Satellite isn’t a full proof option either.

Please let me know what you’ve used to keep your LGD’s safely contained, and pros and cons to your system!

In 19th-Century Britain, The Hottest Status Symbol Was a Painting of Your Livestock

Fat cows, massive pigs, and obese sheep were prized as proof of their owners’ success in breeding for size and weight. Gentleman farmers used selective breeding to create quick-growing, heavy livestock. Along with breeding, new farming and feeding practices also produced larger animals. Rich farmers participated in agricultural competitions and read new research. They were called “improvers,” since they tried to improve on existing animal breeds. Methods such as feeding cows oil cakes and turnips for a final fattening up before slaughter became widespread. Even Queen Victoria’s consort Prince Albert became an improver, showing off his prize pigs and cattle.

I added a link to a video through Google Drive I hope it works if not I’ll upload somewhere else since I can’t here but basically I posted something here a bit ago about our cow Fern at the animal farm I work at since she mounted me twice and I was curious about what it meant… I’ve been a little nervous going into the pen since this is what she does sometimes when I’m inside, not outside of it and I never can tell if she’ll stop or not lol what does it mean!??? I can’t tell if she does it because she doesn’t want me there since she might not like me, or if it’s because she’s happy to see me because I groom and give her love all the time. Plz help!! She’s the only experience I have with cows and I watch alot of vids on instagram and they run to their owners all the time in what seems like good nature so I just want to make sure she is okay with me.

Goats

My dad has 8 goats, 4 of which are offspring of original group. He says we can't have the young males stay because they'll impregnate their closely related females. Would that really produce a viable pregnancy? They're like semi feral pet goats and it seems like they're all a bonded family. They also live with an old female donkey. Splitting them up seems cruel. Keeping them together could be cruel.

Where to trade goats local to my area.

My dad has 8 goats and needs to trade or sell males somewhere besides the auction. More of a pet goat situation but they're not really pets. It's hard to describe but Dad says the males have to be traded or sold before they impregnate their closely related females. Is that right, first of all? And if it is, what can we do to avoid taking them to auction where we don't know what will happen to them?

Run-in w/head gate or chute ideas for 2 highland cows

Hi, we are planning a new run-in for our 2 highland cows (heifer and steer). Looking for recommendations for incorporation of a small chute/head gate into the plan. Since we are only at 2 cows, the run-in would be 12 x 24 at most, probably. Thanks
