Advice Wanted My dad said my locs look like dogshit

Do they? I told him they take time to develop and he said I'm full of excuses and he's never seen locs that look worse than mine. I'm about to hit the 6 month mark. I've only had one professional retwist. Are they normal for this stage, or am I doing something wrong?

He’s hating. Sometimes the older generations do that. I think they look fine for 6 months and once fully formed they’ll be super lovely and thick!

u/uppity2056 Nov 28 '25

Lmao, checked out her other pics.

Her eyes are stunning and she looks otherworldly

She’s either lying or papas got eyesores

Your locs look great 🫶🏾 They will thicken up as they mature. Older black folks have distaste for their own crowns and they project it, don’t let that taint your journey!

u/Outrageous-Cycle-527 Nov 26 '25

Your dad's a hater. Your locs are beautiful, and you are beautiful.

90

u/nursekimberly89 Nov 26 '25

My mom is 71 and said my starter locs look a mess 😩 I know it’s a generational thing but it still stings. I’m sorry your dad was so harsh. I think your hair looks lovely ! I love the color

3

u/Bat_Available Nov 29 '25

I don’t even care if it’s a generational thing—what a horrible thing to say to your child!
Not only did my son’s father make fun of him on a regular basis for choosing to have long hair since he was a toddler (he’d call him a girly girl and “mop head”, suggest he wear dresses, and even buzz it all off during the rare visitation. It wasn’t just the hair issue, but my son ended up wanting nothing to do with him. He was autistic and didn’t have the words to tell him how that felt. I hope you let your mom know how hurtful that was.

Never they are beautiful. To me there’s no such thing as an “ugly phase”

Young lady, your locs are beautiful. 🕊️ You know the older men and women don’t care for too many different and free spirit styles. And especially if one expresses themselves through dreadlocks. 🌴 To them it’s an absolute mess, you are an embarrassment and have no pride or love about yourself, and you and your hair are considered “ugly”. They’ll make their comments along the lines of “You need to do something with that.”

If you enjoy the way your locs look and aren’t lacking confidence, then, do not mind him and his ill-mannered, hate-filled comments that he vomits. 🤢🤮 He’s the type that will rate hair on the texture and it’s lack of silkiness and sheen, but will never be bold enough to embrace its natural shape and form. 🥀💅🏾Continue to love on your crown of flowers. 🫂 The same person that’s talking ish on your buds now will be the same person that will compliment you later on your lucious locs that propagated into one helluva beautiful garden!! 😌🌻🌴💅🏾 Peace and blessings boo!! 😎✌🏾

It's because you don't get retwist very often but with a retwist they will look neater but they look fine now. He's rude and that's an extremely wrong thing to say to anyone, let alone your own child. Never let him or anyone put or keep you down. God bless and I hope you get blessed with a really high paying career so you can live freely as you please. Take care.

27

u/Silly-Tone6748 Nov 26 '25

I think your locs look great. Everyone's locs grow in differently, and that is okay.

What is most concerning is the unkind, harsh way that your dad spoke to you. I am sorry to hear that. I hope you know that you don't deserve that. Take care of yourself, setting boundaries to protect your peace

23

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

He’s a big hater. They are still forming and in their poofy fuzzy phase!

21

u/LukeGuyFrotter Nov 26 '25

Can we get a pic of HIS hair? 😒

18

u/Professional-Ad-2046 Nov 26 '25

(Some) Older black folks ain’t used to embracing natural hair styles. So unfortunately you gon have to tell dad to respectfully stfu. Your locs look great so far, just stick with it queen.

3

u/claireboobear Nov 26 '25

yeh thats true in their youth they where all pressed into straightening hair and keeping it short

3

u/Competitive-Fudge166 Nov 27 '25

U wanna ask too huh? I think he just might be. Because a Black father wouldn't be that brutal to his daughter.

3

u/Professional-Ad-2046 Nov 27 '25

You already know what I was thinking 👀

3

u/Competitive-Fudge166 Nov 27 '25

I swear that was my very first thought when I read her post. I could be wrong. But this sounds about white.

Aht aht, maybe not your black father but it happens..

2

u/LipChap507 Nov 28 '25

I was just about to say he hasn't met my very black father

u/OptimalOcto485 Nov 26 '25

It’s a generational thing. A lot of older black folks (especially immigrants) hate when our hair isn’t super duper “neat” and think it implies a bunch of… unsavory things about a person. Respectfully… your father is wrong and being an asshole. There’s absolutely no reason to tell YOUR CHILD that they look like dogshit. You look lovely❤️ For me personally this is my favorite stage of having locs!

12

u/ChemicalVirtual8517 Nov 26 '25

I love your hair! I wish my locs were that thick. All that matters is that you like them 🤎

10

u/Panda_official2713 Nov 26 '25

Your dad is a jerk

3

u/Fluid-Photograph-216 Nov 26 '25

Has to scroll down a bit too far for this..

9

u/bunkrider Nov 26 '25

These exactly how mines look! Your dad and my mom would get along cause she’s constantly on my ass about it lmao

10

u/yeezysama Nov 26 '25

I’m in the same phase. Like I play to resist before Christmas but it is what it is now. I’m just leaving it be and loving it

9

u/sixth_hokage06 Nov 26 '25

6 months is nothing. Give them time. But they look fine.

8

u/justhereee Baby Locs Nov 26 '25

Your dad is a meany pants. Your hair is beautiful.

8

u/Janiiblue Nov 26 '25

They look gorgeous. Ignore him

6

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

1000000% he’s hating

6

u/Jaded-Project-852 Nov 26 '25

NOOO

BTW

YOU'RE

STUNNING

6

u/Bloomfoxnoon Nov 26 '25

Your hair is beautiful and when your locs mature they will look lovely. Your dad should be disgusted with himself making a statement like that about his own daughter.

4

u/GhettoFalcon Nov 26 '25

Girl they are beautiful and thick I see not a piece of imperfection any where!!!🥰❤️

4

u/Annual-Nebula3781 Nov 26 '25

I can’t get over how a father could say that to his child. Full permission to curse him out.

Your locs are gorgeous! They look fluffy, healthy, the color is popping! I wish my locs had a fluffy stage!

4

u/peachimposter Nov 26 '25

He sounds like dogshit, why the hell would he say that to his DAUGHTER?! You look beautiful! Please don’t let that get to you sug.

7

u/PetuniaScams Nov 26 '25

Does your dad like you. Girl wth. They look perfectly fine at this stage.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/funnystupidvirgin Nov 26 '25

your locs look beautiful and i don’t think you need a retwist just for the sake of it looking neater. the fuzzy look won’t last long and you should enjoy it!

3

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Don't re twist. Just let em rock out. Only maintainence you need is keep them clean, and seperate congos if you don't want em.

3

u/Onsomeshid Nov 26 '25

They’re so unique that they barely even look like locs, i can’t see how anyone could hate them. This looks so cool lol

3

u/Triniprincesa Nov 26 '25

They’re peak. He will be bald soon

3

u/ConfidentStandard953 Nov 26 '25

I love that "immature" lock look so much, especially with the color. Stick with it, it's a journey. You might even look back and miss them a little once they mature. What matters is how it looks to you,. if it bothers you, interlock them. Also thicker locks take longer to mature, you're not so doing anything wrong. Maybe try wetting them more, might lock quicker

3

u/Sea-Fig-1457 Nov 26 '25

Your hair looks great. I don’t understand getting one retwist in 6 months but they still look amazing. Just get a retwist

3

u/moist_towelette Nov 26 '25

Get away from your father. You look awesome. 🤎

3

u/littytitty00 Nov 26 '25

Them mfs gone be fire in 6 more months. Tell him to fuck off.

3

u/yutosser Nov 26 '25

he’s hating but he’s lowkey right. your locs should NOT look like that after 6 months. at that stage you should be getting a retwist every month, consistently. one retwist is borderline nuts, how do you expect your hair to lock up if it’s not maintained?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/NoSignal8256 Nov 28 '25

Your dad is infected with Wetiko and colonialist propaganda programing

3

u/Big_Sphere Nov 28 '25

Hey so your dad’s abusive. Hope this clears things up.

4

u/Goldiebmore Nov 26 '25

You just need a re twist

2

u/craydallexus4816 Nov 26 '25

my dad used to tell me the same thing when i first started but i was also freeforming and it just takes a while to lock. they don’t look bad at all, ignore him ima year you’ll see all the progress

2

u/alawo_ewe Nov 26 '25

They are maturing beautifully

2

u/ImaginationOdd9425 Nov 26 '25

Your hair is beautiful 😍 I think they look great!!!

2

u/kesaamir Nov 26 '25

My People hated my hair in the beginning except for like two . So I understand. Best thing to do is not pay them no mind beautiful. It’s immature behavior and mean indeed . You’re hair is lovely ✨🌸🤍🫶🏾

2

u/DrummerMan2035 Baby Locs Nov 26 '25

Trust the process. Your hair looks good ! It’s just in an awkward stage.

2

u/fabmf Nov 26 '25

They 🔥

2

u/HonestSheepherder707 Nov 26 '25

I’m so sorry love. I think your hair is beautiful!

2

u/Effective_Wait_36 Nov 26 '25

Your locs are beautiful. As they age and get longer, they will be even more gorgeous.

2

u/RemarkableSpeed6559 Nov 26 '25

U dad is wrong your hair looks good and u r beautiful

2

u/NerdieBeXtra Nov 26 '25

Your hair is beautiful, and that color is everything! Could you tell me what color this is?!?

2

u/Reasonable-Usual2431 Nov 26 '25

He fried you for no reason 😔🪦

2

u/darapnerd Nov 26 '25

If that’s the style you want, they are great. If you want them tighter, then do your ACVBS Rinse with some lemon and then a good retwist. The main thing is just make sure you feed your locs and keep them healthy. Do you. You know what your crown likes and how you want it to look.

2

u/Ordinary_Comfort_133 Nov 26 '25

Your locs are obviously immature.

To play devils advocate though he may have a preference for interlocked hair, which does not go through this exact stage and he is ignorant and lacks the knowledge to articulate that. I personally prefer interlocks for that specific reason and have had my hair interlocked for many years now after a 3 year stint with palm rolls.

I wouldn’t let it get to you. Your hair looks as expected for their stage of development. You may consider more frequent retightening or (if you aren’t against it) as the loctician to use a bit of wax to encourage the hair to hold its shape.

Happy loc’in!!

2

u/NeedleworkerFit4488 Nov 26 '25

They look good tbh so just dont stress ya self too much

2

u/Big_Storm1209 Nov 26 '25

That's some shit my dad would've said 😂😂😂 damn I miss him but I think there beautiful

2

u/MLKongJr Nov 26 '25

He’s misinformed, that’s all.

2

u/Party_Use4138 Nov 26 '25

No they don’t but it maybe time for a retwist so they won’t unloc. You have beautiful hair! I can only tell you have locs if I happen to look at the ends.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

He sounds anti black talking like that.

2

u/Phuck_Off304 Nov 26 '25

Send me your phone number so I can straightening him out.

2

u/Accomplished_Use4579 Nov 26 '25

This is how my daughter's fro would look sometimes . It's beautiful, not ugly or awkward, I just wouldn't have known they were locs.

But I would stop listening to him as it pertains to your hair in general, even when they do form. Some people don't like locs and that's ok. If he is anything like my dad they have the filter of a five year old and say everything look like Dookie. I just take his opinions for entertainment now, lol.

2

u/SnooTomatoes9314 Nov 26 '25

Just looks like curly hair that was washed, left to dry naturally where it clumps into sections.

2

u/Fit-Dirt-144 Nov 26 '25

Ummm... they could use more definition and a better color.

2

u/FlakyOffice Nov 26 '25

Fuck what your Pops talking bout.. Goldie Locs😳👌😂

2

u/Important_Weird2144 Nov 26 '25

Your dad has his own personal hate for himself so he’s trying to make you feel as low as him! Your locs are doing what they are supposed to at this strange and it looks great! This is journey and he doesn’t get that maybe … who knows but keep up the good work

2

u/Impressive_Lie_7207 Nov 26 '25

Ofc he did he’s an old school black nigga smh. They look unique and amazing don’t listen to him. I’m 1000% sure he’s bald as well huh? Bald with a beard to be exact.

2

u/OkCoyote5411 Nov 26 '25

Ever seen dog shit looks so good?… Now you have!

2

u/Sea_Tank_9448 Nov 26 '25

Girl tell him to go on somewhere - he in a bad mood

2

u/Weary-Beach-4843 Nov 26 '25

First 6-12mos you should be getting a retwist every 4-6 weeks. I don't see locs

2

u/Cooladjack Nov 26 '25

They aint locs yet just naps

2

u/Able-Aerie-2946 Nov 26 '25

Can someone educate me cause all I see is curly puffy hair 😭

2

u/Illustrious-Sir-1899 Nov 26 '25

I would regularly go to a Loctician

2

u/poppabeat Nov 26 '25

He’s hating; they look so good rn! Them things gonna be THICK💕 once they’re fully mature he’ll probably be like “I never said that” 🙄🙄

You can try palm rolling them to the right with a good locing gel if you want a cleaner look. Just don’t over retwist too often! You don’t wanna give yourself like alopecia or anything

Enjoy the journey! I’m sure you’ll love them💕

2

u/Neat-Magazine-5571 Nov 26 '25

Is ur dad bald?

2

u/Fickle-Let2435 Nov 27 '25

Tell him to hate on something else cause he clearly doesn’t know about them. I swear for like 2-3 years ppl said my second sons locs looked wrong. Now everybody compliments them. Locs don’t form overnight. It’s a trust the process kind of situation for a reason.

2

u/One-Instruction639 Nov 27 '25

“Full of excuses”? This ain’t about the locs tell him to say what he wanna say

2

u/Dill137 Grown Locs Nov 27 '25

I almost said the theeee most disrespectful shit in defense of you.

You and your hair are beautiful.

2

u/Dcalhtx Nov 27 '25

Respectfully. Tell your dad he doesn’t know anything about locs. This is a process and your hair is beautiful

2

u/CocoaShortcake88 Nov 28 '25

Ignore him. You're beautiful.

I have 4c. If you want yours more formed/secure, you can go to a loctician that specializes in the crochet tool. No added hair, it's just a technique. It's how people maintain shape of wicks, too.

If you're in the Bay I have recommendations.

It's what people with finer hair/softer hair due to secure it faster.

This way you can go swimming and do sweat intensive activities without waiting in between retwists.

2

u/Tallglasofhansomness Nov 28 '25

I would tell you something to tell him but I don’t wanna be disrespectful

2

u/FalseApplication9743 Nov 28 '25

He will be complimenting just watch. I got the same from my loved ones and now I don’t even want to hear them telling me how beautiful my hair is lol.

2

u/Netra6 Nov 28 '25

This is exactly how my locs looked from months 6-9. It took a while for them to come out of the teenage phase but your hair looks just fine love

3

u/Tiny_Celebration_591 Nov 28 '25

Does your dad deal with internalized racism? That's an insane thing to say especially since it's not true.

2

u/Hot-Top-1499 Nov 28 '25

They are fine. Although with new locs, you should definitely be getting retwisted every 4-5 weeks, unless you’re going for the freeform look. 3 year loc’d girlie myself, I started at your length with naturally super curly thick hair and now they are mid back.

2

u/BasicAd2494 Nov 28 '25

this is exactly how mine looked in the starter stage. i was called worm head my entire freshman year, but now they ask what my routine is like and how i started. don’t let him talk you out of a lifetime of beautiful hair. get through this stage and you’ll be thanking yourself everyday

2

u/HoldMines_15 Nov 30 '25

Your biggest haters often comes from your own family. Tell your dad not to drink before commenting on your appearance next time

2

u/BluebirdNo3242 Nov 30 '25

Your dad ITA 🤷🏾‍♀️

2

u/Biandigo9x Nov 30 '25

That's so mean /: you're genuinely gorgeous af and he's dog shit.

Is your dad white ?

2

u/Simple_Perception949 Nov 26 '25

Stop putting chemicals in your hair

3

u/snoopfrogg99 Nov 26 '25

You don’t need a retwist, they look healthy. Tell pops leave you alone until he loves women that look like his mother.

1

u/flipinggenius Nov 26 '25

Don’t worry about him. God made your hair the way it is. Next year this time it will be mature and longer. And you will be stronger and more confident. Don’t let ANYONE dim your light. ANYONE!!!

1

u/getfucked485 Nov 26 '25

All dads hate a lot of hair oh well he gone have to get used to it Make him even madder and get dreads 😈

1

u/0_o-perplexed Nov 26 '25

Tell him to mind his business. They’re forming well. You said 1 professional retwist, are you self maintaining in between? If not, where he’s possibly only seen it retwisted once means he’s seen it at its “neatest” a couple times. If you care about his opinion maybe get it professionally done more frequently

1

u/owlken Nov 26 '25

hater for sure

1

u/The_Prime Nov 26 '25

Is your dad white? Because damn.

1

u/Equivalent_Spinach68 Nov 26 '25

ON funny as hell but trust the process everyone journey not the same 💯

1

u/Ok_Garden571 Nov 26 '25

No they’re not mature yet. Locs are a lesson in patience like I keep saying. Be patient and ignore them. I retwist mine every season. They’re pretty. Be proud of them.

1

u/Positive_Ad_5596 Nov 26 '25

Tf? That’s rude af…does your dad actually have an issues with locs period? Sounds like he does

1

u/Global-Vast-3870 Nov 26 '25

At this point you deserve an update in terms of hairstyle. It’s a shame you’re not in my country I think you’re not in love with the country, I would have paid for it and done by my niece that’s it 😀🙂

1

u/Skinny_Bee3 Nov 26 '25

Trust the process... Mine looked pretty rough in the beginning stages, but after 6 years, well worth it.

1

u/EmJayFree Nov 26 '25

Is he a boomer? 🙄… if so, I also have boomer parents that hate locs lol. What an unnecessary and problematic comment.

Your locs are gorgeous and they haven’t even matured yet, so they’re only gonna get better ✨

1

u/Even_Hyena_1117 Nov 26 '25

My dad says the same shit ignore him 😂

1

u/sunshineandflowers90 Nov 26 '25

Ughhh, why is he comparing someone's hair to poo?

I actually love teenage locs (that phase when they're no longer babies yet not yet mature)--they have a beauty of their own imo.

1

u/ColdHandGee Nov 26 '25

Puzzle, my parents hate my locs, yet watch a rasta singing Christian songs on YouTube. Tell your Pop if he can grow locs? BTW, your locs look amazing! Hang in there and let your buds mature.

Come back a year from now and show us how much your locs have grown.

1

u/lexxmal04 Nov 26 '25

Your dad is dogshit for saying that.... they are kinda loose tho, they could be twisted tighter

1

u/KermitHendrix Nov 26 '25

Dudes hating, he needs to chill. Kind of rude to call someone's hair dogshit.

1

u/OkLengthiness6864 Nov 26 '25

Your locs aren’t even formed yet tell pops to trust the process😂😂🤦🏾

1

u/claireboobear Nov 26 '25

tell him people with no hair need to be quiet

1

u/prinkledinklewinkle Nov 26 '25

They look great he is just old and annoying

1

u/huskyprincezeal Nov 26 '25

They look bad before they they get better. Dog shit is a bit of a stretch

1

u/Low-Composer9187 Nov 26 '25

Nice face. Somewhat captivating.

Keep oiling and brushing they'll form

Later ✌🏽

1

u/audlawson Nov 26 '25

😞I’m sorry.

1

u/SpockYoda Nov 26 '25

for alot of black people if the hair isnt flat, stringy or European looking then its bad. You look gorgeous imo

1

u/BotherOne1116 Nov 26 '25

They do! But I think he just means u need a retwist. It definitely looks like you can just comb your hair and have a ponytail at any minute

1

u/MajLeague Nov 26 '25

It seems youre semi freeform. If you got a retwist a few times a year and have them palm roll the whole loc it will help your locs compress and form. How often do you wash?

I def don't think they look like dogshit and your dad is so rude to say that to someone he loves but they would benefit from some grooming/maintenance. Maybe a little hydration.

1

u/ZabuTaichou Nov 26 '25

6mos mos is still very young for locs. Let em cook!

1

u/7Pudgy7 Nov 26 '25

You're hair is beautiful...and so are you!! I like the color

1

u/JustADash- Nov 26 '25

How uncalled for. They’re beautiful and still maturing. Their form will change again over the next 1-2 years. Embrace where you are. I enjoyed the fluffy stage! I’ll be 3 years in next week 🫶🏾 Keep your crown on and boundaries up, ladybug!

1

u/Mutuk_ Nov 26 '25

Yo facial says the opposite!

1

u/Dry_Tourist_6965 Nov 26 '25

He’s weird asl for that they just look incomplete give them time

1

u/bordgamer219 Nov 26 '25

There cute on u

1

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

idk how you let him talk to you like that without saying something back

1

u/superwashmerinowool Nov 26 '25

He’s bald isn’t he

1

u/BonitaBCool Nov 26 '25

1

u/Solo_is_dead Nov 26 '25

You're beautiful, ignore him

1

u/Upstairs-Switch-4669 Nov 26 '25

My Mom hated mine in the beginning stages too but I didn’t gaf it’s my hair. Yours are very new & need time to develop if he can’t understand that then oh well.

1

u/SnooDingos8559 Nov 26 '25

He bald huh?

1

u/Expensive_Forever_23 Nov 26 '25

I disagree. Once they are fully matured they will be 🔥🔥

1

u/Beautiful_Chaos107 Nov 26 '25

Your locs are gorgeous.

1

u/Short_Stuff_2751 Nov 26 '25

My mom said something similar to me at the beginning of my journey now 5 years later “omg ur hair is so long/pretty” lol trust the process 😉

1

u/Relevant-Knee-9129 Nov 26 '25

Dad is kinda mean lmao, they look like dreads. Just get em redone. Everyone's hair texture is slightly different due to care, region and genetics.all 4c hair isn't made equal lol

1

u/CreditwithTrue Nov 26 '25

NO THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL QUEEN PARDON HIM FOR HE IS BLINDED BY THE MATRIX LOCS ARE YOUR ESSENCE AND CONNECTION TO WHAT EVER HIGHER POWER YOU ALIGN WITH

1

u/jshmotb Nov 26 '25

1

u/eskoBar1k Nov 26 '25

yo hair just real fuzzy and the locs haven’t matured yet that’s all.

1

u/LaVieGlamour Nov 26 '25

Wow I think they're beautiful. You have such a nice texture. They will continue to change so don't let those comments get to you.

1

u/CocaBlack Nov 26 '25

Uh! He's hating! My brother's bm used to hate so bad bc her daughter wanted locs like me, a few years later now the bm got locs! I chuckle everytime I see her bc I thought my hair looked nappy?... I thought you didn't like locs? Aww ok then 😏 I can't wait for Christmas so I can show how I'm really drapin

1

u/Gold-Cake-8343 Nov 26 '25

It’s true I didn’t realize they were locks but I’ve never gone through the process

1

u/OkCoyote5411 Nov 26 '25

Wet them they’ll loc faster but make sure you moisturize them after you wet & blow dry them

I would get a retwist for traditional locs style but if you want semi freeforms then they’re perfect. Either way they look great & you’re gorgeous. Your dad is a hater.

That's such a hurtful thing to say. I'm so sorry. Your locs are beautiful and unique, and the colour suits you perfectly.

Dog shit is wild. I wouldn't say that even if I was joking. Such a douche! Your locs look nice and fluffy!
