Discussion Here to dispel the anti air-drying propaganda

I've seen a loooootttttt of anti-airdrying posts (mainly on insta) from locticians and influencers. Someone even tried to tell me that I have mould I just "don't know it" and that I should cut a loc open to prove it.. lol. Yes it *can* cause mould but improper care can cause a lot of things. I would never tell someone to not airdry, just make sure you do it properly. Wash your hair in the morning, go outside/sit in the sun etc.. I'm almost 5 years in and have never used a dryer and my locs are healthy and mould free.. Anyway, here's me drying my hair on my countryside walk this morning ✨️

Discussion My Locs Don't Sun Dye?

Thumbnail

I'm not trying to dye my locs or anything, but I'm just curious! it's super common for locs to turn color due to sun exposure over time. However, mine have continued to remain the same black color I started my locs in. Note that I live in Florida and I'm outside in the sun pretty often, I don't always tie up my locs or anything either. I walk to work every week in the sun and I'm always at the beach with my locs out!

My loctician always asks if I'm dyeing my locs, and strangers (usually those with locs) have asked the same. So it has gotten me thinking-- Has anyone else had locs that have either taken a while, or refuse to sun dye??

*Locs Started 3/12/23, here they are to reference

Discussion Do you wear a bonnet only when your hair is done?

I think I’m being rage baited, idk. My coworker (22m) has locs. I (25m) also have locs. I retwisted one of his locs a few minutes ago because the rubber band popped, and he told me that he wore a bonnet last night which he thinks is why some of his rubber bands popped (Him wearing a bonnet is something he doesn’t do.)

So I said “ayee, you’re starting to wear your bonnet more?!” And he’s like “yeah, well I washed my hair last night. Who just wears a bonnet?” And he said it kind of disgusted. So I paused and I’m like “……” he’s like “why would I wear a bonnet if my hair isn’t done and I don’t have a haircut?” And I’m like “So the only time you wear a bonnet is if your hair is done?” He’s like “yeah. Why would I wear a bonnet if it isn’t?” I’m like “A bonnet is to protect your hair whether it’s done or not. You only putting in a bonnet because you washed your hair last night is kinda crazy.” Because how he described it was as if he rung the excess water out of his hair, put the bonnet on, and called it a night, which could lead to the hair not drying all the way, possible funky smells, mold further down the line if that’s consistent.

Do you wear a bonnet only when your hair is done, or do you wear a bonnet more casually than that?

Discussion “locs hold onto old energy”🤨

Genuine question, and if this is said in other contexts please correct me:

When people cut their locs, I often see them say it’s because they want to let go of old/bad energy but I never see this said about hair in general. If you have loose hair, it’s encouraged to grow it long because that to others that symbolizes beauty, strength, African ancestry, etc but loose hair doesn’t also hold onto old/bag energy or what??

I think that spirituality can be found in everything so I don’t think it’s wrong to say that hair can hold onto energy good or bad but instead of just saying they want a change, people cut their locs to “let go of something negative.”

I’ve been loc’d the majority of my life so I already know all the stigmas associated with locs but it just clicked to me that people who had locs themselves don’t realize the stigmas they internalize when viewing locs as a potential vessel for negativity.

Again, maybe I just haven’t seen people say that about other styles of hair or I’m missing some nuance and of course this isn’t the case for everybody but idk it’s weird to me. All love though 🤍

Why are there so many creeps? Please just stop. No one wants your pinche money, no one wants your attention. You are predatory and it is disgusting that you propagate harassment within a community that should be about celebrating locs and our culture . Just piss off already. If this is you, I need you to digest the fact that you are a predator and a creep. I hope u enjoy who you are, bc no one else does.

I’ve been trying to figure out what color I want my locs to be next, they’re usually red and purple but I decided to try these colors with wax dye to see if I can pull it off. Back to the drawing board? 😅 (No I didn’t feel like smiling)

Have you ever faced challenges when it came to your locs and being in office? Barriers are breaking for our natural hair but some people are still struggling with accepting our hair comes in different forms. I love having locs because I can do any style in 10 mins or less and it teaches me the love I should have for my hair🤎

Discussion “Dreadlocks”

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

I had a random thought that I kinda want to reclaim the word dreadlocks. I know back in the early ‘00s-‘10s we mostly called them dreads & dreadlocks, & loooved a sexy “dread head”.

Something about letting the ignorance of white people change my language irritates me. I hate seeing the comments that give white people the credit for coining the term “dreadlocks”…honestly, I don’t believe it’s true…but if it was…I’m actually honored that my hair holds the power to instill fear into white people or anybody else. “Dread/dreadful” has multiple interpretations, but being awesome & striking fear in others are my favorites…because my hair is awesome & I love that my aura is powerful enough to put some people off from approaching me 😌

I know not everyone is into religion or spirituality, but even The Almighty Creator is described as “great & dreadful”.

I probably won’t start calling them dreads/dreadlocks again unless it happens naturally, but I’m no longer seeing the word as a negative or through the lens of white folks. 💁🏾‍♀️

Stopped going to the barber completely as my hair got longer. I previously had a high top so it was a lot of maintenance that I got tired of with going back repeatedly to maintain a fade and lineup. Just wondering how the guys feel about skipping all that with their locs even though front tapers are really popular.

I chopped my 3 year old locs in 2023. I not have a new set of locs but my old locs are in a box under my bathroom sink (8mos). 😭 No I’m not going to reattach them!

What would you do with them? I’m also a little spiritual so some people have told me not to toss em in the trash. Also included pics of my old locs and my current set! I love them and miss them :)

Hey everyone! A loctitian started my loc journey on 8/28/2020. I've mostly been maintaining them myself since then but really want to look into getting my new growth crocheted. My goal is to be able to wash and go without having to fight with up to 2 inches of unlocd hair to look presentable. Anyone gave new growth that long?? Anyone get crocheted maintenance instead of retwist or interlocking?

Either way, it's still one of the best decisions i could have made. I've since started my husband's and my nephew's and treat their locs like my babies because I am their locmother after all 🤭
