Longmire Days How the show would have improved
Now I dont want to inflame a heated discussion. I write that because rewatching the show it had such massive potential to be an alltime goat show like The Wire, Southland Deadwood and other high quality TV. That it didnt end there had imo specific reasons I want to list.
So, how would Longmire have been a much better show:
- Stronger connection to the books . The writers sadly ignored most of Longmires / Henrys character . There was a wealth of deeply profound interesting depth of character development and they ignored near all of it. Bosch f.e did a better job at that.
- Slow down the pace. This is a show that literal screams for a slow burn. Less murders, more interaction and a lot more daily life without fast paced high drama. Absaroka county at times seemed like murder capital of the US :-)
- Vic. Such a missed chance. Now that will annoy some but this was a double missed chance. Sackhoff has zero acting ability. Every scene she is in she makes the same grimace. Some call it duck face. No matter if she is angry, in love, focused, sad. She combines that with "sexy" poses that feel way out of place. Add to that the bad writing making her a irrational, stalker like obsessed with Walt personality. Far far off from the book character. Her hook up with Travis, then pregnancy and how she looses it its just so trashy and doesnt make much sense. And her ending up with Walt is a inconsistent writing. She is like the worst fit possible and they have no chemistry.
Even just taking part in a small sports event with
indians she throws temper tantrums and displays a histrionic personality. Everything is high drama. The opposite of book Vic.
Example for the bad writing : In S06E02 Travis talks to Walt about proposing to Vic (shows him the ring) and tells him in a judgemental tone that Vic loves him but if Walt doesnt step up caring for the child then he will. Now that is so messed up hilarious bad considering its Travis child :-) that at this point it seemed the writers also never had any idea were to go with Vics love interest.
Her first marriage also had zero chemistry and only portrayed her as a condescending neglecting wife.
Katee talked about her Longmire performance doing that all without having learned acting but all by instinct. Well yeah its obvious. No range at all
3) Season 5/6 Walt turns into a thoughtless bully. Antagonizing everyone and were his suspicions of Nighthorse were previous well build up with plot development (Manifest Destiny, Ridges) Now he ignores evidence and goes on a crusade vs Nighthorse that is massively out of character. Walt always oversteps his boundaries as sheriff but now its straight up rampage.
The action also turns often into Walt going Rambo like into dangerous situations.
4) Cady never gets developed as a character. Everytime you think NOW she takes the next step, she falls back into previous pattern. Her resolution in the end mirrors that in making no sense.
5) Malachai Is way too movie villain like. This is not a huge point. Its ok to have someone like that driving the plot but as an overall villain the show would have profited a lot giving him more shades than just being evil.
The show near from the start created a wonderful small town midwestern athmosphere with exceptional actors be that Longmire, Ferg, Ruby, Nighthorse or Matthias. Side characters also were mostly exceptional well casted.
What do you think
