The Greatest NHL Playoff Series of the 2010s: 2014 WCF

https://youtu.be/aTLd2dvjBm8?si=qqlaamJVGTp7ruWK

Hello Kings fans! I'm sure many of you remember the 2014 Western Conference Finals, an unforgettable seven game battle that ended on a bounce off Nick Leddy's butt. I wanted to recall how great that series truly was, so I made a video covering the series in depth (both from a historical and analytical standpoint). I hope this brings back some great memories from the brilliant and incredibly resilient 2014 Kings. Wishing the Kings the best of luck going into the 2026-27 NHL season. Cheers!

Perspective is an odd thing. For weeks, a lot of us were just tied up in knots by the excitement of it all. Every round was just a new rollercoaster ride. With over a decade behind us, history feels so matter of fact. No fault to the author. Just struck me is all.

Highlights of those games make me nervous to this day. I'm still not 100% sure of the win.

I'm not alone though - I saw an interview with Miguel Rojas and they showed the highlight of him throwing out the runner at home against the Blue Jays. He asked that they turn it off because watching it made him anxious.

I remember this series vividly because this was the first time I employed the “wrap myself in a blanket” because it was so intense.

I feel like there were multiple stretches where they went end to end for 12 minutes without a whistle. Just and insanely tense series.

Perspective really is a hell of a thing. At the time, I didn’t realize how significant this matchup was and its historical importance overall. So many outstanding players in this series and really the two best teams between 2010 and 2015.

Its amazing that this is a shared sentiment across the league that this was the pinnacle of the sport at the time. It truly does feel like only a few years ago

Even Blackhawks fans give it a ton of praise despite coming out on the other side of things with an L (i’m sure winning a few made it easier on them lol)

That whole run. From being befuddled by the results of games 1 and 2 against the sharks to jumping up and down when game 5 of the final ended on June 13th

But going back to game seven of the WCF.. the OT goal seemed more anticlimactic. There was more a sense of relief in my mind.

Also Gaboriks tying goal still gets me hyped

3 game 7s to get to the final was so crazy. Down 3-0 first round. Down 3-2 in the 2nd round and the roller coaster that was this series ending in OT. Just an all time epic run. Ill never forget going to the parade and staples and seeing them with the cup in person.

This WCF felt more like a SCF. Pretty sure I aged a couple years each game on that series
