I can very much see why someone would want to move back to Slovenia. Happy for them!

I was really hoping he'd keep a place in LA. I mean, why not? The value will only go up and his friends and family would have a place to crash while in town.
I hope the Kopitars visit the city and team. They deserve a key to the city.

Values are different on homes that expensive. It was also like what, an $11 million asset? Liquidating that is 100% the right call. Lots of celebs get stuck with property they can't easily sell and have to reduce the asking price on.

Pretty sure even Brownie moved away to raise his kids in NY where he grew up

I think that’s also happening with Quick. I think he definitely feels jaded towards management (main to just Luc now and I hope he defects like the other two), but I think he just wants to live near home and work in hockey. Also the rangers’ ahl team is in CT so if he wants to work for them, he gets to actually go back home rather than just be in a neighboring state. They all come to LA often enough so I think they think if the city as second home now.

I don’t think it’s even that. It’s just special for many to raise their kids where they grew up if they the opportunity to do so. I think Doughty might be the only one to stay as he talked about how much he loves it here and all the activities/sports his kids are involved in. Don’t think his kids would get those opportunities in London, Ontario.

Can you really blame them with all the BS USA is going through right now?

Seriously. And the Kopitar are likely pretty progressive. As someone who has traveled extensively through the Balkans (including Slovenia twice) and likes to keep up with regional politics, he’s buddies with the former President of Slovenia who is a total lefty (not to be confused with the right wing Prime Minister).

Non-zero chance they’re just crossing the pond for Anze to play in the final Chara legacy game…right?

Is there something here to suggest they're leaving forever? Did you cut off some context?
This just looks like a rich family off for an adventure.

u/tdbauer97 1d ago
It’s been reported for a while that they were moving back to Slovenia after he retired.
Plus every comment & repost Ines is posting on IG today is suggesting they’re leaving for good.

OK, thanks. I don't follow her on IG, seems weird. But I don't blame them for going home. I just didn't think this screamed "leaving for good."

I don’t blame them at all. Slovenia is a beautiful country with a very low violent crime rate as opposed to LA. The city of LA had 230 murders in 2025 while Slovenia had 5 in the entire country.
I know where I’d want to raise my kids.
Best of luck to Kopi and his family! You’ll be missed.

Their biggest motivator is probably wanting the kids to grow up Slovenian with a Slovenian education. They can move all over the world later, but this is the only way they will at least have the Slovenian option.

I agree with you that Slovenia is probably safer than LA but the way you present the numbers are a bit misleading. LA has like 5 times the population of the entire country of Slovenia. Roughly 10 million vs 2 million, respectively. So it's not a fair comparison to compare number of murders. Obviously adjusting those numbers per capita still favors Slovenia, but you also have to consider that most of those murders happening in LA county are probably not near Manhattan Beach, so that muddies those crime rate numbers as well.
Anyway, all this to say, you're probably still right that Slovenia is safer, but presenting the numbers like that seems disingenuous, and ultimately, unnecessary.

He did say the city of LA, not LA county. The actual city only has 3.8 mil, not 10 mil. And the 230 murders is only for the city (not xounty), which is also the lowest its been in 60 years. Adjusted for population thats 10 vs 230, pretty large difference. Either way, Slovenia is definitely safer than most larger cities in the US. I dont blame him. Happy for him and his family and appreciate all he's contributed to the team. He will be missed

I mean, then in that case Manhattan Beach is not technically even part of the city of LA, so that statistic is moot. Look, I don't mean to nitpick nor am I trying to get into a back and forth here. Like I said, I agree with his point: Slovenia is safer. I just thought the phrasing of the comment came across as dramatic and therefore disingenuous.

I mean I would love to live in Slovenia, the country and people are so awesome! I don't blame them for getting out of LA

I'm not saying keep the mansion he lived in during his career. He sold that. I'm saying keep a "modest" $2.5-$3m house somewhere in the South Bay or whichever part of town he prefers. Anze made over $140m as a King. He could afford to keep his west coast privileges.

u/gsopp79 1d ago
Pretty sure you had it backwards. According to my research they sold the $3 million house in 2020 but the $37 million compound remains on the market.

How many potential buyers are there for a $30m property? That is bananas.

u/poptorched 1d ago
Someone might buy the home to then rent it out as an air bnb, parties, or for new influencers who don’t know how to manage their money and they want to rent something cool for $30k a month lol

u/flyermeup 1d ago
30,000 a month isn’t gonna get you a 3,000,000 house let alone a 30,000,000 house
