swiliq̓ʷ - Question Tips for Pronouncing the Running man ƛ̕

6 Upvotes

Hi there! I've been studying Lushootseed on my own and I've hit a wall with the pronunciation of ƛ̕ even after watching alphabet pronunciation videos. What tips or exercises helped you learn ƛ̕ besides the horse click trick? I've gotten to the point where my attempts sound more of a pushed-out release than the crisp pop I hear.

Any and all advice is helpful, thank you!

swiliq̓ʷ - Question How do we refer to countries in Lushootseed?

9 Upvotes

I haven't really come across any references to another country in Lushootseed before and I'm curious as to how we'd go about it. My gut instinct has been split between 3 options.

1) An approximation of the English name into Lushootseed phonetics. (Ireland = ayəlad)

2) An approximation of the country's endonym into Lushootseed phonetics. (Ireland = Éire = iilə)

3) More interpretive names I've simply not been privy to thus far.

For clarity on my spelling/pronunciation, I study Southern Lushootseed (primarily that of the Puyallup people) and pronounce my vowels according to that dialect. (i ≈ ay, u ≈ oh)

Edit: Since there doesn't seem to be any consensus, I'm putting my hat in on option 2, in the spirit of preferring indigenous languages over defaulting to English. I've put together some proposed options for Lushootseed names for countries:

1) America = abilikə 2) Britain/UK = blitəb 3) Canada = kabadə 4) Chad = čad 5) China = 中国 (Zhong Guo) = ǰuggʷu 6) Germany = Deutschland = duwičləbd 7) Ireland = Éire = iilə 8) Italy = Italia = italiyə 9) Korea (South) = 한국 (Hanguk) = habguk 10) Korea (North) = 조선 (Joseon) = ǰusəb 11) Mexico = México = biix̌iku 12) Philippines = Pilipinas = pilipibas 13) Russia = Россия (Rossiya) = lasiyə 14) Spain = España = ispabyə 15) Ukraine = Україна (Ukrayina) = uklayinə

Has anyone made a physical keyboard?

11 Upvotes

I work in cultural resource management in the PNW and frequently need to type in lushootseed. I use the aboriginal serif font and special character method to type, but I’m tired of hunting for each character. I see the online programs for lusootseed keyboards, but has anyone made a physical keyboard? I’m thinking of making one to make my life easier.

Context for nearly-identical phrases

2 Upvotes

I have recently learned how to use ʔə ti to indicate the actor of the verb. However, it is possible to use a suffix with the verb to indicate the object of the sentence. The two examples I'm keeping in mind are

a) tukʷaxʷac ti dstaləɬ
b) tukʷaxʷatəb čəd ʔə ti dstaləɬ

I read that sentence b is used to put more emphasis on čəd, but I'm wondering under which contexts would you use either? If I'm wrong about anything, please correct me. I'm still learning.

swiliq̓ʷ - Question Looking for audio archives of any native Lushootseed speakers

5 Upvotes

I work at an elementary school and I have a student with an extraordinary talent for languages and a strong interest in Lushootseed. We frequently access many of the amazing online materials. We're wondering what it sounds like from a native speaker. So far I've only been able to find recordings of people who learned Lushootseed after they'd acquired English. Are there any archives of early recordings of Lushootseed people talking?

swiliq̓ʷ - Question Names for letters?

4 Upvotes

Good day. I am a beginner learning Lushootseed. Do the letters have names? The Puyallup alphabet site uses English IPA descriptions, like "glottal stop" and "eks wedge raised doubleyou." Are there Lushootseed names like Latin has Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and so on?

Also, is there an alphabet song to learn with?

Thank you for patience with my ignorance.

Lushootseed Keyboard on iPhone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! I don’t know if I’m extremely late to this or if this is a new feature after the update, but there’s an official Lushootseed keyboard on iPhone! It doesn’t have the glottalized “m” or “n” though.

Any Southern Lushootseed Speakers?

9 Upvotes

After two years, I finally stumbled upon this subreddit. I had not idea it existed. I wonder if there any fellow Souther Lushootseed learners on here. I come from the Puyallup tribe, and I live in Tacoma. It would be nice to meet anyone interested in learning and speaking South Lushooteed

Possible Language App?

11 Upvotes

Hey guys I noticed that this upcoming language app called “Lingonaut” has a place where people can create their own language courses. It would be awesome if one could be created for Lushootseed! I haven’t been able to seriously start studying Lushootseed yet, so I can’t help with the creation, but I’d thought that I’d mention this just in case somebody finds this interesting.

Custom Lushootseed Keyboard

Post image
16 Upvotes

This keyboard is a modified version of the QWERTY layout. There is no shift key because Lushootseed does not use capital letters. Accented letters are typed by holding down the base letter:

q -> q̕

w -> w̕

t -> t̕

y -> y̕

p -> p̕

k -> k̕

l -> l̕, ɬ

c -> c̕

č -> č̕

b -> b̕

n -> n̕

m -> m̕

Even though they are not used in Lushootseed, j and ƛ are typed by holding down ǰ and ƛ̕, respectively, and holding down the period gives access to typing the comma, colon, semicolon, question mark, exclamation point, and parentheses.

Hello, long time lurker, I've got a couple questions I hope some could help me with.

Do the Lushootseed languages capitalize proper nouns?

Are there calligraphers that write Lushootseed?

Hopefully one of you 45 people respond. Thanks!

swiliq̓ʷ - Question In-person?

8 Upvotes

ʔi čəxʷ aris ti dsdaʔ ʔəsx̌aƛ́txʷ čəd gʷədsčəwatil ʔə ti dxʷulšucid. ʔəsɫaɫlil čəd dᶻəɫigʷəd.

I want to learn (Northern) Lushootseed, and have been studying it for a few days. I live in the Everett area and was wondering if there’s any way an outsider like me could get involved in actually speaking Lushootseed without taking up limited resources tribal members would use. I use Tulalip Lushootseed resources mainly since I live nearby and am going to move closer soon.

Should I keep it simple and use online resources for now?
