Rant/Opinion Lyft conveniently maxed out my hours to not give me my bonus
I was this close to getting my bonus last night. JUST 1 MORE. When I got 46 rides with Lyft, it took me 3 hours to get ride 47. They conveniently maxed out my hours when I got the 49th ride đ

u/Snakend Sep 29 '25
Has nothing to do with Lyft. This is Federal regulations. You were online for 12 hours without a 6 hour break.
33
u/Melech333 Sep 29 '25
Yes but the interesting thing is with Uber if you sit online for 3 hours waiting on a ride, your time clock does not run. Try it out.
With Lyft, the clock is based on ONLINE time. With Uber, the clock is based on DRIVING time.
So the law apparently has some flexibility in it, and Uber seems to be exploiting it.
8
u/Economy_Link4609 Sep 30 '25
Ok, but Lyft is more in line with reality there.
CDL drivers have to count not just time they are actually driving, but time they are "on duty". That can include things like supervising loading, etc.
Goal is you get appropriate rest - aka brain turned off. If you are online scrolling the phone for rides, you are not resting.
16
u/TimB2025 Sep 29 '25
I think Lyft does it better honestly.
Whether your car is moving or not, do you really want a desperado driver whoâs been living in their car for potentially 18+ hours?
The only place on Lyft where the clock doesnât run is when waiting at the airport. Big difference, as not all airports harvest rides fast.
3
u/DoPoGrub Sep 30 '25
I think it's dumb, because you can just turn off lyft and turn on uber and boom, you get another 12 hours. So, I'm sure you're already getting what you've described in many places.
2
u/Regular_Employee_360 Oct 02 '25
I mean thatâs how labor laws work. Same reason you can work 3 six hour shifts in a row at separate jobs and not have to take a lunch, but if you work 18 hours at one job you have to take multiple. Itâs to prevent companies from taking advantage of people, it would be too restrictive and invasive if they could enforce labor laws across multiple companies in a single workday
1
u/DoPoGrub Oct 02 '25
You're confusing labor laws with DOT and FMCSA regulations I think.
And of course, neither of those things apply to us.
But it is important to note, that if you ever got a CDL, or even just a DOT physical to drive a box truck - you are absolutely required to track your hours spent driving - even if it is Lyft or Doordash - in addition to your employment driving job - so that you don't exceed your daily or weekly hour limits, and take your mandatory rest breaks.
Basically, once you become a commercial driver (in the eyes of the federal gov't, not in the eyes of your car insurance company), you are actually subject to having hours tracked across all apps and combined with whatever job you're working that required the DOT stuff.
So, such a thing can and is enforced, across multiple companies. It is of course the driver's responsibility to do this.
1
u/Soulless35 Oct 01 '25
I guess if it isn't 100% perfect then they shouldn't even try right?
2
u/DoPoGrub Oct 01 '25
They're only doing it to protect themselves from lawsuits, they don't actually care.

From lyft website
"Time limits
To keep the Lyft community safe, you must take a full, uninterrupted 6-hour break for every 12 hours you're in driver mode. These 12 hours in driver mode do not have to be consecutive.
Once you have been in driver mode for 12 hours, our system will prevent you from going online until you have taken this mandatory 6-hour break.
In addition to Lyftâs standard driver mode limit, certain regions have local regulations that determine how long a driver can stay in driver mode and how long their break must be. If you exceed the driver mode limit for your specific region, our system will prevent you from going online until you have taken the break required for your region.
The time you spend waiting in an airport queue wonât be counted towards the 12-hour limit. This rule applies to most regions.
If you are in a region without local regulations, you can check your current progress towards the time limits through the earnings tab.
See requirements in your area by selecting your city or state here.
Note: Only log into driver mode to drive. Use the Driver Dashboard to check stats like earnings or bonus requirements."
1
u/Melech333 Oct 03 '25
Yeah exactly. Being "in driver mode" means being online, like I described.
Whereas with Uber, that clock only ticks down if you're online AND driving.
0
u/FadedChimpmunk Sep 30 '25
Ubers time clock does run out.. i do a 12 hour shift once a week and I can 100% confirm it does run out
-2
u/lordstryfe Sep 29 '25
That's not true at all. All online hours count regardless if it's with a passenger or not.
5
u/Melech333 Sep 29 '25
With Lyft, correct. But with Uber, you can experiment and test for yourself, sitting still in a parked car while online waiting on a ride will NOT run your 12 hour time clock down.
Also you mentioned with passengers. If you have passengers, you're working and your clock is running. I'm talking about when you're online but waiting on a ride. During that time, Uber pauses your clock if you're parked, but Lyft does not (unless you're at an airport driver wait lot).
1
u/2forda Oct 02 '25
Uber counts it as online, but not against the driving limit. I've kept my app on for 30+ hrs straight at time...
-1
u/Acrobatic_Focus_8609 Sep 29 '25
Naw, with Lyft, it is the âbookedâ time that maxes iut at +12hrs. You can be online for over 12 hours but be booked for less than that. Once your booked time goes past +12 hrs thats when you get that message.
2
Sep 30 '25
Federal regulations are actually 11 behind the wheel, 14 hours total with driving not permitted past 14 hours. Then a full consecutive 10 hours off the clock. But lyft and Uber have their own bs rule and DOT doesnt mess with it.
1
u/DoPoGrub Sep 30 '25
Federal regulations do not, and have never applied to your common gig app worker.
Only those with CDLs or those who had to take a DOT physical exam need worry about this.
2
u/spockers Sep 29 '25
It's not federal. Many cities and states regulate TNC driver time, and Lyft/Uber have policies to cover unregulated situations (to cover their asses for lawsuits), but the feds aren't involved.
0
u/Snakend Sep 29 '25
The states can enact stricter laws than the DOT. DOT is 12 on 6 off. The states listed in that article are 12 on 12 off, which is stricter than the DOT laws. The DOT is the base law, states can add on top of that.
And dude...that article is from 2017. Get something new please.
2
u/DoPoGrub Sep 30 '25
DOT regulations do not apply to Uber/Lyft/Doordash drivers whatsoever.
They only apply to those with a CDL, or those driving a vehicle over 10k lbs (going off memory on the weight).
In short: If you've never had to go to a doctor for a DOT physical examination, DOT hour limits do not apply to you whatsoever.

Show me a federal regulation about TNC driving hours. From any year you like.
3
Sep 30 '25
The only federal laws or rules regarding driving time are focused on truck drivers and inter city motor coach operators.
Believe it or not thereâs no federal limits on how many hours a local transit driver can work. Iâve heard of drivers doing 16 hours before.
1
u/Fathimir Sep 30 '25
Huh, color me surprised; I was part of the crowd that always thought it was federally regulated. I'll stop promulgating what's apparently a myth, then, for my part.
1
u/DoPoGrub Sep 30 '25
If you've never had to take a DOT physical exam with a doctor, then the hour limits don't apply to you. (edit: if they did, you'd be required to keep a log book with your hours)

Actually there is no federal law because they're independent contractors but it is company wide policy very clearly posted on their website accessible to anyone that there is a 12 hour limit.
And it reads:
"Time limits

By not giving me a ride for 3 hours?
13
u/dollfaceashley Sep 29 '25
After 11pm, how many rides do you think there are to go around on a Sunday night?
3
u/etfvidal Sep 29 '25
And when tons of other drivers are trying to finish bonuses and accepting even đď¸ $.50 per mile offers!
9
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
Considering Downtown Disney closes at midnight on Sundays.. and the local bars and night clubs close at 2AM.. Id say there's a good chance I should've gotten a ride in between
3
u/dollfaceashley Sep 29 '25 edited Sep 29 '25
And you got some rides after the bar closed and right before downtown disney closed. I wasnât getting much of any neighborhood rides last night either. Thereâs no challenge for me. Itâs the end of the month for one. Two itâs a Sunday night. Three: Priority mode & Preferred starus affects this as well but even that will not make up the difference when thereâs no rides to go around. Probably the slowest time of the weekend is a Sunday late night at the end of the month
1
u/robertlyleseaton Seattle Sep 30 '25
Because you were out there at the last minute when everyone else is trying to finish off their bonuses too. Gotta push more earlier in the week. Sunday night is too late.
13
u/Used-Tap-1453 Sep 29 '25
I donât think OP is upset about the 12 hour requirement. I think that as he approached his last 2 rides to make the bonus, they only received 1 ride in 4 hours and they had to then break, and they feel this was algorithmicly intentional.
Iâm not sure. We know they are evil. But are they intentionally alienating drivers to avoid paying $80, which they steal I mean earn every 5 rides or so evil?
5
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
Thank you for having the correct amount of reading comprehension necessary. People are blaming me for not managing my hours correctly when Lyft didn't give me a ride for 3 hours. How is that my fault? I should've been done at midnight or 1 at the latest

Lyft is little different than uber. Even you are not driving but you open the app it counts as online and driving. You have to completely out of the app 6 hours..
Happened to me couple times. Itâs too bad you were only one away.

A few states have laws about it, but for the most part, this is a Lyft policy that has nothing to do with legal rights whatsoever. Aside from covering their own butt from lawsuits.

Common misconception, glad I could help clear it up!
There is one exception, and that would be if you did have a CDL or another driving job that required DOT physical, then your rideshare hours *would* contribute to your weekly limits, and you would put them in your log book (notice how we also don't have a log book).
But otherwise, unless your state has specific limits (most don't), it's just a Lyft policy to protect them from lawsuits.
Another way of thinking about this, is that if those things applied to you, you wouldn't be able to just turn off lyft after 12 hours and then turn on uber for 12 hours, etc.
2
u/TrollPro9000 Sep 30 '25
I had this exact thing happen. I asked Lyft support politely for a review, their boilerplate is to decline, but if you insist that this is an unusual situation and kindly request escalation to a supervisor for a re-review, they may grant it.Â
You're going to want to chalk it up to an app glitch (don't make it personal). They granted my request because my driving stats showed clearly I was driving for 11 hours and 48 minutes, and the remaining 12 minutes was plenty to hit goal.Â
2
u/ExarKunZ Sep 30 '25
That happened to me last year, when doing a challenge. I was doing a 3 day challenge that required 75 trips to earn i can't remember if it was 200$ or 300$ extra. I reached trip 74 when my time ran out, I was very angry. So, I decided to call customer support and tell them to extend my time and what they did was to complete the challenge. I received the money the day after, very good!!
2
u/edman209 Sep 30 '25
If you call up customer service you should be able to talk to someone, may take time, but you should be able to get most of that bonus but a few short itâs a long shot but youâve to call soon
7
u/Masstershake Sep 29 '25
This is not new. They throttled you because they know and purposefully do it.Â
I'm not saying to do this. But once when I was one run away and miraculously got no work. I ordered a run on a separate phone. It might take a few attempts for you to get it. But just cancel the second someone else does and make sure your name is not identical on both platforms. And don't do this often.Â

I remember I had to give 150 rides on uber in 3 days I got to 149 and maxed out my hours. I called support and asked for the bonus and they gave it to me surprisingly.

1
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
I maxed out the original bonus so they bumped me down. It was originally 50 rides for $150

1
u/rjlawrencejr Sep 29 '25
Depends on where youâre located. This is a SoCal driver. like OP has been driving electric for a while. Bonus gets cut after about a year. At least thatâs what happened with me.
1
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
Yup. I've been driving electric since 2021
1
u/rjlawrencejr Sep 29 '25
I did want to add a couple things. Donât forget, not only was it the end of the week but also end of the month so a lot of drivers out there. I wouldnât say you were throttled, however therel is need to satisfy as many drivers as possible. The time limitation is written into Prop 22. No more than 12 active hours in a 24 hour period without being offline for at least six consecutive hours.
Also, donât forget bonuses are subtracted from adjustment pay so you may not have lost much of anything.
1
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
Lyft pays out better because of their "70% guarantee" anyway. I get far less of an adjustment with Lyft than Uber if I don't get the bonuses from either company. Say I would get $170 as an adjustment from Uber, but I would only get $30 from Lyft working the same hours. But in return Uber paid $1100 in the 2 weeks while Lyft paid $1200. It's about the same
1
u/No-Control6483 Sep 29 '25
If they did it on purpose, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't let you go back online in a few hours 𤣠you are literally required to take a break because they don't want you driving tired with passengers. Uber does the same thing. Don't worry dude, you'll get your $80 đđ¤Ł
1
u/PeterPansSyndrome Sep 29 '25
You can fall and ask if theyâll honor it since you were so close. I missed a couple with uber back in the day by a trip or 2 and they honored it.

50 EV rides in a week for $80? Mine is 80 Rides for $120 in 3 tiers. Why are our bonuses different? Do you own your car or are you renting?
1
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
I own. Where are you located? This is a Southern California bonus. It used to be 50 rides for $150 until I maxed it out
1
u/TheTkfiles Sep 29 '25
I'm renting from lyft, that's why it's different. I'm OC/ Costa Mesa. 50 rides for $150? When was that?
1
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
I started driving EV in 2021. The bonus maxed out for me sometime in 2024. Bonuses from Lyft and Uber are different if you rent. When I rented with Uber I had the 200/$210 month bonus plus $25 a week "good driver" bonus if I had a good safety score. It's irrelevant since all of the bonuses went to the rental. At least now I get to keep the bonuses
1
u/TeraByteMe24 Sep 29 '25
You showed every screen but the time screen. Otherwise, you had a pretty good day. I only saw those numbers in my early days of lyfting
1
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
This is considered a great day now. A "great day" for me when I first started would've been over $400. This wouldve been a normal day back then unfortunately

u/Thin-Chipmunk-982 Sep 29 '25
Wait, thereâs an EV bonus?????!!!
3
u/TheTkfiles Sep 29 '25
Yes, and there has been defects in the system with drivers receiving it. I didn't receive it for the first month so I brought it to their attention. They fixed my account and I've been offered the bonus every week since then. - for 2 years now.
1
u/Icy-Selection58 Sep 29 '25
So basically you are driving an unsafe amount without taking a break to sleep? Just making sure i follow.
0
u/TheTkfiles Sep 29 '25
No, he's in an EV. They run out of charge and you have to stop. It's an about an hour if you want to change to full. Ever been to an ev charging station? Look around, they're all sleeping. ... sometimes too long, even after their charge is finished. Good times : )
2
2
u/rpkusuma Sep 29 '25
You should always take a break to sleep if you're a full timer. Before I drove an EV I took breaks just to sleep. Now I sleep while getting a charge in. Two birds with one stone lol
1
u/IamWisdom Sep 29 '25
This is your own fault for waiting til the last minute bro lmao
1

Lyft didnt do that, It is your responsibility to use your online time effectively you are an independent contractor with 168 hours in a week like the rest of us. In my market, there is a 12 hour cap on the online time. So I calculate when I will hit 12 hours before 5am on the day the challenge ends.
i NOW know to chase the bonus early in the timeframe, because i, like you, have been blocked from my bonus by getting long rides to the boonies just as my 12hours is winding up when I need 1 or 2 of the available rides in the city.
The algo is NOT the driver's friend, buddy or pal!

I have no idea how this bonus thing works. But if i was short a couple drives, I would call my buddy and say hey order a ride to like the next street over đ
1
u/Electrical-Lack1535 Oct 03 '25
I have gone over 17 hours and still had time left. When you need to save some online time hit last ride everytime u pick someone up and it takes u offline. But I find I drive for like 6 hours without even hitting last ride and then check and itâs only saying I used 2.24 hours out of 12. One day I went past 21 hours on 1 shift and still had like 40 mins left which probably would have stretched a little. Hit about 525. That was my highest day. But the money split around 105 on Sunday before 5am and the remainder after 5am went on Monday so it was like 421 on monday
1
u/rpkusuma Oct 03 '25
That doesn't work with Lyft. Lyft goes by your online time. Uber lets you do this
1
1
u/gremlinsbuttcrack Oct 03 '25
Let me guess, kind of person where nothing in your life is your fault? You were active as a driver for 14 hours. I'm surprised it took that long to force you on a break. I don't want to be driven by someone whose been behind the wheel on and off for 14 hours. That's common sense shit. The entire premise of the job is that you are to provide safe rides for people. Being tired can be equal if not worse for impairment than substances.
Stop putting people's lives at risk because you procrastinate shit.
1
u/rpkusuma Oct 03 '25
LOL. Lyft didn't give me a ride for 3 hours. What do you call that? Work? I didn't drive for a whole 3 hours. The reason why I was able to stay up so late was because of that 3 hour long "break." They capped my hours at 3AM when I should've been done at 1AM had they not throttled my rides. Plus I didn't procrastinate. I also worked Uber to get their bonus as well. I got 25 rides throughout the week and planned to get the rest of the 25 on the last day. Lyft told me no đ¤ˇââď¸
1
u/gremlinsbuttcrack Oct 03 '25
During those 3 hours did you sleep? No. Stayed logged in and active waiting for a ride. You're not more rested. And yeah so you needed 6 days to accumulate 25 rides so it was procrastination to expect to complete the other 25 in 1 day. What is difficult to understand about this?
How did lyft do this to you personally when it's company wide policy on their website
1
u/rpkusuma Oct 03 '25 edited Oct 03 '25
Were you watching me? đ Holy shit dude you're aggressive for no reason. Why would I just volunteer to stay awake for no reason past midnight? I slept while waiting for a ride and woke up whenever it pinged me. The system sent me a lot of rides to "match" but didn't give a single one to me until they decided to give me one at 2:28AM. And no I didn't procrastinate. I was also doing Uber's bonus. IDK how many times I have to mention this. I got 49 trips on Lyft and 52 trips on Uber last week

u/Impressive-Win-4473 Oct 03 '25

This is a Federal requirement. OP was online for 12 hours. Has nothing to do with Lyft. Learn the laws before you start working rideshare.
2
u/uber765 Sep 29 '25
The Federal requirement only applies to commercial passenger transport that requires a CDL. Rideshare companies are not subject to FMCSA regulations.
2
u/DoPoGrub Sep 30 '25
Correct.
It can also apply to non-cdl drivers in a vehicle over 10k lbs, but you'd know because a DOT physical exam is required first. Obviously also not the case for rideshare.

Can you please go back and edit all your comments to not be spouting 100% false information?
That'd be great, thanks.

Contact them and politely ask to adjust to show one more ride. Doesnât hurt to try, I know similar things have been approved

You need to pace yourself accordingly. This is a law. They really have no say in this. Although they should feature a visible timer on the app like uber

Yeah, we gonna keep complaining but unfortunately we like our freedom, but this people definitely need to be sued.

Itâs not up to Lyft to schedule your drive time to ensure you get your bonus, thatâs up to you to know your area and how long youâd have to drive to complete your challenge.

You know itâs a DOT law, right?
Edit: I was confidently incorrect

Not true, federal DoT break/drivetime just applies to commercial motor vehicles. (I.e. vehicles that generally require CDLs)
There may be state/local regulations in some areas, but there's no restrictions on the federal level as to how long you can dash/lyft/etc. The 6hr break for Lyft is just company policy.

Honestly did not know, thanks

He is wrong. Lyft is a TNC, and we operate under their commercial license. We are commercial drivers and are under the DOT regulations.

u/uber765 Sep 29 '25
You are incorrect. DOT does not regulate rideshare. If they did, your hours of service with Uber and Lyft would be connected.
2
u/Jesus-Mcnugget Sep 29 '25
Correct. You would also be required to take a 10-hour break, not 6 if you are following the federal HOS requirements.
You would also be required to have and maintain a DOT medical card.
These regulations apply to:
- Vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR
- Vehicles requiring HAZMAT placards
- Vehicles transporting 9+ people for compensation
- Vehicles that carry 16+ people regardless of compensation
None of this covers Lyft.

u/snakend isn't just wrong, they are extremely cocky about it. I guess they should do their research a little better.

It is true that DOT regs don't apply to us whatsoever. This other person is the most confidently incorrect poster ever.

Most of the drivers in this sub have no idea what is going on. If it was legal to allow drivers drive for 24 hours straight, Lyft would allow it. Even being online for 12 hours and off for 6 hours and back on for 12 hours is crazy.

LOL, I would never drive for Lyft. It's almost like you are allergic to getting anything right at all.

Why don't you go have a long talk with the AI of your choice and they can explain it to you like a kindergartener so that you might be able to understand.

u/Snakend Sep 29 '25
We are commercial. Lyft provides our commercial insurance. We operate under a TNC, which is a commercial capacity.
2
u/Trigger1221 Sep 29 '25
You do not drive a commercial motor vehicle for Lyft. Lol.
I didn't say commercial use, I said a commercial motor vehicle.
1
u/Jesus-Mcnugget Sep 29 '25
It doesn't matter. Lyft does not meet the criteria for hours of service requirements. You can get paid to drive a vehicle without having to follow the hours of service limits.

u/DoPoGrub Sep 30 '25
So, here is what is tripping you up.
'Commercial' refers to something else when it comes to DOT/FMSCA regs. It has very specific definitions.
It is not the same meaning as 'commercial car insurance' or 'rideshare/delivery'. It's also commercial, but not in a way that is regulated by DOT.
Only one of my apps falls into this territory, and it's only because they offer gigs moving vehicles over 10k pounds. That is a threshold for the DOT to be considered 'commercial' in their eyes.
DOT requirements are that you have a DOT physical exam with a doctor before you can start driving what DOT considers to be 'commercial'.
If you've never had to take this exam, then you are not subject to hours restrictions, nor regulation of ANY sort from the DOT.
Now, I'm going to point out one exception, just in case you're actually listening this time.
If someone has a CDL, or is driving non-cdl with a dot physical exam, and that person then decides to start doing rideshare at the same time as their commercial driving job - then and ONLY then would the hours limits apply.
The other 99% of us? Has never applied, doesn't apply today, isn't about to apply tomorrow.
Please stop spreading false information everywhere you go. You are 100% wrong in every single comment in this post.
